A 5,5-<i>d<sub>2</sub></i> -luciferin was prepared to measure isotope effects on reactions of two intermediates in firefly bioluminescence: emission by oxyluciferin and elimination of a putative luciferyl adenylate hydroperoxide to dehydroluciferin.
