Comparison of construct validity of two short forms of Stroke-Specific Quality of Life scale.

ABSTRACT: No studies have compared the 2-factor structures of Wong's and Post's versions of the short-form Stroke-Specific Quality of Life (i.e., 12-item SSQOL) scale. This study compared the construct validity of 2 short-forms of the 12-item-SSQOL (not the 12-domain-SSQOL).Data were obtained from a previous validation study of the original 49-item SSQOL in 263 patients. Construct validity was tested by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to examine whether the two-factor structure, including psychosocial and physical domains, was supported in both versions. The CFA tested the data-model fit by indices: chi-square ?2/df ratio, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), comparative fit index (CFI), nonnormative fit index (NNFI), standard root mean square residual (SRMR), and parsimony normed fit index (PNFI). Item factor loadings (cutoffs: .50) were examined. Model fit was compared using Akaike information criterion (AIC) and consistent AIC (i.e., CAIC) values.All model fit indices for Post's version fell within expected ranges: ?2/df ratio = 2.02, RMSEA = 0.05, CFI = 0.97, NNFI = 0.97, SRMR = 0.06, and PNFI = 0.76. In the psychosocial domain, the item factor loadings ranged from 0.46 to 0.63. In the physical domain, all items (except the language and vision items) had acceptable factor loadings (0.68 to 0.88). However, in Wong's version, none of the model indices met the criteria for good fit. In model fit comparisons, Post's version had smaller AIC and CAIC values than did Wong's version.All fit indices supported Post's version, but not Wong's version. The construct validity of Post's version with a 2-factor structure was confirmed, and this version of the 12-item SSQOL is recommended.

Project description:BackgroundPsychometric evidence is necessary to establish scientific integrity and clinical usefulness of translations and cultural adaptations of the Stroke-Specific Quality of Life (SS-QoL) scale. However, the limited evidence on psychometrics of Yoruba version of SS-QoL 2.0 (SS-QoL(Y)) is a significant shortcoming. This study assessed the test-retest reliability, internal consistency, convergent, divergent, discriminant and known-group validity of the SS-QoL(Y).MethodsYoruba version of the WHOQoL-BREF was used to test the convergent and divergent validity of the SS-QoL(Y) among 100 consenting stroke survivors. The WHOQoL-BREF and SS-QoL(Y) was administered randomly in order to eliminate bias. The test-retest reliability of the SS-QoL(Y) was carried out among 68 of the respondents within an interval of 7 days. All respondents were purposively recruited from selected secondary and tertiary health facilities in South-west Nigeria. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics of Spearman correlation, Cronbach's alpha, Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC), Independent t-test and One-way ANOVA. Alpha level was set at p < 0.05.ResultThe physical health, psychological health, social relationship and environment domains on WHOQoL-BREF with correlation coefficient that ranged from 0.214 to 0.360 showed significant correlation with similar domains on SS-QoL(Y). Dissimilar domains between the two scales had r values from 0.035 to 0.366. Discriminant validity of SS-QoL(Y) showed that items' r value ranged from 0.711 to 0.920 with their hypothesized domains. The scale demonstrated moderate to strong test-retest reliability with Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) for the domains and overall scores (r = 0.47 to 0.81) and moderate to high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha =0.61 to 0.82) for domains scores. These correlations were also significant for the domains and overall scores (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences across different age groups or gender for the domains or overall scores of SS-QoL(Y).ConclusionsDiscriminant and known-group validity, test-retest reliability and internal consistency of the Yoruba version of the Stroke Specific Quality of Life 2.0 are adequate while the convergent and divergent validity are low but acceptable. The SS-QoL(Y) is recommended for assessing health-related quality of life among Yoruba stroke survivors.

Project description:BACKGROUND:The Observable Movement Quality (OMQ) Scale measures generic movement quality. Each item of the OMQ Scale focuses on a different element; together, the 15 items assess the whole construct of movement quality. OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to determine the construct validity of the OMQ Scale using 7 hypotheses defined to conform to the Consensus-Based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments. DESIGN:This was an exploratory validation study. METHODS:A pediatric physical therapist assessed motor performance in 101 children using an age-specific motor test and the OMQ Scale. The direction, magnitude, and rationale for 7 hypotheses, which concerned relationships (n = 2), probability of low scores (n = 4), and difference between diagnosis subgroups (n = 1), were defined. RESULTS:The results confirmed 6 of the 7 hypotheses, indicating sufficient construct validity. Significant positive relationships were found between OMQ Scale total scores and the severity of motor disabilities (r = 0.72) and z scores on motor tests (r = 0.60). Probabilities for low scores on OMQ Scale items-exceeding the chi-square critical value-were confirmed for children diagnosed with spasticity, psychomotor retardation, mitochondrial diseases, and ataxia; however, probabilities for low OMQ Scale item scores on strength regulation in children with ataxia were not confirmed. OMQ Scale total scores for children who were not ambulatory because of neurological conditions were significantly different from those for children who were not ambulatory because of fatigue (r = 0.66). LIMITATIONS:The sample of children was based on theoretical assumptions about relevant variations in clinical representations; on the basis of the results, it appears that children with low strength regulation were underrepresented. CONCLUSION:The confirmation of nearly all hypotheses supported the validity of the OMQ Scale for measuring movement quality in clinical practice in addition to standardized age-adequate motor performance tests.

Project description:Background The Older people Quality of Life-7 domains (OQoL-7) is a 28-item multidimensional questionnaire developed to measure community-dwelling older people’s QoL. The OQoL-7 assesses both importance of and satisfaction in seven QoL domains (Material resources; Close entourage; Social and cultural life; Esteem and recognition; Health and mobility; Feeling of safety; and Autonomy). This study aimed to investigate concurrent and construct validity of the OQoL-7. A secondary aim was to compare different methods of weighting participants’ ratings of satisfaction according to their individual ratings of importance, as compared to the OQoL-7 total score (unweighted). Methods Data came from the first and second samples of the Lausanne cohort 65+ study, assessed at the same age of 72–77 years in 2011 (N?=?1117) and 2016 (N?=?1091), respectively. To assess concurrent validity, the OQoL-7 was compared to other measures of the same concept (single QoL item) or related concepts (self-rated health, SF-12). Construct validity was tested by comparing subscores in the seven QoL domains in the presence and absence of two stressful events during the preceding year (financial difficulties and relationship difficulties). The effect of importance weighting was assessed using moderated regression analysis. Results The OQoL-7 total score was significantly associated with the single QoL item (Spearman’s rho 0.46), self-rated health (Spearman’s rho 0.34), SF-12 physical (Spearman’s rho 0.22) and mental (Spearman’s rho 0.28) component scores. Large differences (Cohen’s d?>?0.8) were observed in the presence or absence of stressful events in the expected QoL domains: “Material resources” in the presence or absence of “Financial difficulties” (Cohen’s d 1.34), and “Close entourage” in the presence or absence of “Relationship difficulties” (Cohen’s d 0.84). Importance weighting resulted in a very small improvement in the prediction of the single QoL item (?R2 0.018). All results were highly consistent across 2011 and 2016 samples. Conclusions The OQoL-7 showed adequate concurrent and construct validity in two samples of older people. In future studies, the decision to use weighted or unweighted scores will depend on the priority given to either optimizing the prediction of QoL or limiting the burden on respondents and the amount of missing data.
