Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are fatal neurological disorders caused by prions, which are composed of a misfolded protein (PrP<sup>Sc</sup>) that self-propagates in the brain of infected individuals by converting the normal prion protein (PrP<sup>C</sup>) into the pathological isoform.
