When soil oxygen levels decrease, some bradyrhizobia use denitrification as an alternative form of respiration. Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens (nos<sup>+</sup>) completely denitrifies nitrate (NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>) to dinitrogen, whereas B. japonicum (nos<sup>-</sup>) is unable to reduce nitrous oxide to dinitrogen.
