Anderson localizations and photonic band-tail states observed in compositionally disordered platform.

ABSTRACT: Anderson localization in random structures is an intriguing physical phenomenon, for which experimental verifications are far behind theoretical predictions. We report the first experimental confirmations of photonic band-tail states and a complete transition of Anderson localization. An optically activated photonic crystal alloy platform enables the acquisition of extensive experimental data exclusively on pure eigenstates, revealing direct evidence of band-tail states and Anderson localization transition within the band-tail states. Analyses of both experimental and simulated data lead to a comprehensive picture of photon localization that is highly consistent with theories by Anderson and others. We believe that our results provide a strong experimental foundation upon which both the fundamental understandings and application possibility of Anderson localization can be promoted significantly.

Isotropic band gaps and freeform waveguides observed in hyperuniform disordered photonic solids.

Project description:Recently, disordered photonic media and random textured surfaces have attracted increasing attention as strong light diffusers with broadband and wide-angle properties. We report the experimental realization of an isotropic complete photonic band gap (PBG) in a 2D disordered dielectric structure. This structure is designed by a constrained optimization method, which combines advantages of both isotropy due to disorder and controlled scattering properties due to low-density fluctuations (hyperuniformity) and uniform local topology. Our experiments use a modular design composed of Al2O3 walls and cylinders arranged in a hyperuniform disordered network. We observe a complete PBG in the microwave region, in good agreement with theoretical simulations, and show that the intrinsic isotropy of this unique class of PBG materials enables remarkable design freedom, including the realization of waveguides with arbitrary bending angles impossible in photonic crystals. This experimental verification of a complete PBG and realization of functional defects in this unique class of materials demonstrate their potential as building blocks for precise manipulation of photons in planar optical microcircuits and has implications for disordered acoustic and electronic band gap materials.

Synthetic dimension band structures on a Si CMOS photonic platform.

Project description:Synthetic dimensions, which simulate spatial coordinates using nonspatial degrees of freedom, are drawing interest in topological science and other fields for modeling higher-dimensional phenomena on simple structures. We present the first realization of a synthetic frequency dimension on a silicon ring resonator integrated photonic device fabricated using a CMOS process. We confirm that its coupled modes correspond to a one-dimensional tight-binding model through acquisition of up to 280-GHz bandwidth optical frequency comb-like spectra and by measuring synthetic band structures. Furthermore, we realized two types of gauge potentials along the frequency dimension and probed their effects through the associated band structures. An electric field analog was produced via modulation detuning, whereas effective magnetic fields were induced using synchronized nearest- and second nearest-neighbor couplings. Creation of coupled mode lattices and two effective forces on a monolithic Si CMOS device represents a key step toward wider adoption of topological principles.

Nanostructured fibers as a versatile photonic platform: radiative cooling and waveguiding through transverse Anderson localization.

Project description:Broadband high reflectance in nature is often the result of randomly, three-dimensionally structured materials. This study explores unique optical properties associated with one-dimensional nanostructures discovered in silk cocoon fibers of the comet moth, Argema mittrei. The fibers are populated with a high density of air voids randomly distributed across the fiber cross-section but are invariant along the fiber. These filamentary air voids strongly scatter light in the solar spectrum. A single silk fiber measuring ~50 μm thick can reflect 66% of incoming solar radiation, and this, together with the fibers' high emissivity of 0.88 in the mid-infrared range, allows the cocoon to act as an efficient radiative-cooling device. Drawing inspiration from these natural radiative-cooling fibers, biomimetic nanostructured fibers based on both regenerated silk fibroin and polyvinylidene difluoride are fabricated through wet spinning. Optical characterization shows that these fibers exhibit exceptional optical properties for radiative-cooling applications: nanostructured regenerated silk fibers provide a solar reflectivity of 0.73 and a thermal emissivity of 0.90, and nanostructured polyvinylidene difluoride fibers provide a solar reflectivity of 0.93 and a thermal emissivity of 0.91. The filamentary air voids lead to highly directional scattering, giving the fibers a highly reflective sheen, but more interestingly, they enable guided optical modes to propagate along the fibers through transverse Anderson localization. This discovery opens up the possibility of using wild silkmoth fibers as a biocompatible and bioresorbable material for optical signal and image transport.

Anderson localization in synthetic photonic lattices.

Project description:Synthetic photonic lattices provide unique capabilities to realize theoretical concepts emerging in different fields of wave physics via the utilization of powerful photonic technologies. Here we observe experimentally Anderson localization for optical pulses in time domain, using a photonic mesh lattice composed of coupled fiber loops. We introduce a random potential through programmed electro-optic pulse phase modulation, and identify the localization features associated with varying degree of disorder. Furthermore, we present a practical approach to control the band-gap width in photonic lattices by varying the coupling between the fiber loops, and reveal that the strongest degree of localization is limited and increases in lattices with wider band-gaps. Importantly, this opens a possibility to enhance or reduce the effect of disorder and associated localization of optical pulses.

Record-High Thermoelectric Performance in Al-Doped ZnO via Anderson Localization of Band Edge States.

Project description:Oxides are of interest for thermoelectrics due to their high thermal stability, chemical inertness, low cost, and eco-friendly constituting elements. Here, adopting a unique synthesis route via chemical co-precipitation at strongly alkaline conditions, one of the highest thermoelectric performances for ZnO ceramics ( PFmax=$PF_{\text{max}} =$ 21.5 µW cm-1 K-2 and zTmax=$zT_{\text{max}} =$ 0.5 at 1100 K in Zn0.96Al0.04O${\rm Zn}_{0.96} {\rm Al}_{0.04}{\rm O}$ ) is achieved. These results are linked to a distinct modification of the electronic structure: charge carriers become trapped at the edge of the conduction band due to Anderson localization, evidenced by an anomalously low carrier mobility, and characteristic temperature and doping dependencies of charge transport. The bi-dimensional optimization of doping and carrier localization enable a simultaneous improvement of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity, opening a novel pathway to advance ZnO thermoelectrics.

Topological Anderson Insulator in Cation-Disordered Cu2ZnSnS4.

Project description:We present the first candidate for the realization of a disorder-induced Topological Anderson Insulator in a real material system. High-energy reactive mechanical alloying produces a polymorph of Cu2ZnSnS4 with high cation disorder. Density functional theory calculations show an inverted ordering of bands at the Brillouin zone center for this polymorph, which is in contrast to its ordered phase. Adiabatic continuity arguments establish that this disordered Cu2ZnSnS4 can be connected to the closely related Cu2ZnSnSe4, which was previously predicted to be a 3D topological insulator, while band structure calculations with a slab geometry reveal the presence of robust surface states. This evidence makes a strong case in favor of a novel topological phase. As such, the study opens up a window to understanding and potentially exploiting topological behavior in a rich class of easily-synthesized multinary, disordered compounds.

Noncontractible loop states from a partially flat band in a photonic borophene lattice.

Project description:Flat band systems are commonly associated with compact localized states (CLSs) that arise from the macroscopic degeneracy of eigenstates at the flat band energy. However, in the case of singular flat bands, conventional localized flat band states are incomplete, leading to the existence of noncontractible loop states (NLSs) with nontrivial real-space topology. In this study, we experimentally and analytically demonstrate the existence of NLSs in a 2D photonic borophene lattice without a CLS counterpart, owing to a band that is flat only along high-symmetry lines and dispersive along others. Our findings challenge the conventional notion that NLSs are necessarily linked to robust boundary modes due to a bulk-boundary correspondence. Protected by the band flatness that originates from band touching, NLSs play a significant role in investigating the fundamental physics of flat band systems.

Unfolding the band structure of non-crystalline photonic band gap materials.

Project description:Non-crystalline photonic band gap (PBG) materials have received increasing attention, and sizeable PBGs have been reported in quasi-crystalline structures and, more recently, in disordered structures. Band structure calculations for periodic structures produce accurate dispersion relations, which determine group velocities, dispersion, density of states and iso-frequency surfaces, and are used to predict a wide-range of optical phenomena including light propagation, excited-state decay rates, temporal broadening or compression of ultrashort pulses and complex refraction phenomena. However, band calculations for non-periodic structures employ large super-cells of hundreds to thousands building blocks, and provide little useful information other than the PBG central frequency and width. Using stereolithography, we construct cm-scale disordered PBG materials and perform microwave transmission measurements, as well as finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. The photonic dispersion relations are reconstructed from the measured and simulated phase data. Our results demonstrate the existence of sizeable PBGs in these disordered structures and provide detailed information of the effective band diagrams, dispersion relation, iso-frequency contours, and their angular dependence. Slow light phenomena are also observed in these structures near gap frequencies. This study introduces a powerful tool to investigate photonic properties of non-crystalline structures and provides important effective dispersion information, otherwise difficult to obtain.

Vivid colours in hyperuniform complex-index photonic structures by resonant interference of photonic band gaps and optical band gaps.

Project description:Hyperuniform photonic structures (HPSs) have been doped with complex index materials to increase their reflectivity and colour expression range. HPSs synthesized using dielectric SiO2 nanoparticles have been mixed with a small amount of dopant nanoparticles (c d ≤ 1%) having a complex refractive index. Various dyes including Sudan I, Sudan Blue II, Alizarin yellow GG, Bromocresol purple and polydopamine (PDA) are used as dopants. Large reflectivity enhancements of HPSs (∼100%) are observed by resonant interference of photonic band gaps (PBGs) and optical band gaps (OBGs). Reflectivity enhancements are observed only when PBGs of HPSs match with OBGs of dopants. The colour expression range of HPS increases by 600% by doping with melanine-like PDA nanoparticles, which have the imaginary part of the refractive index in whole visible range.

Realization of all-band-flat photonic lattices.

Project description:Flatbands play an important role in correlated quantum matter and have promising applications in photonic lattices. Synthetic magnetic fields and destructive interference in lattices are traditionally used to obtain flatbands. However, such methods can only obtain a few flatbands with most bands remaining dispersive. Here we realize all-band-flat photonic lattices of an arbitrary size by precisely controlling the coupling strengths between lattice sites to mimic those in Fock-state lattices. This allows us to go beyond the perturbative regime of strain engineering and group all eigenmodes in flatbands, which simultaneously achieves high band flatness and large usable bandwidth. We map out the distribution of each flatband in the lattices and selectively excite the eigenmodes with different chiralities. Our method paves a way in controlling band structure and topology of photonic lattices.
