The Peripheral Flicker Illusion.

ABSTRACT: A new illusion is reported. A visual object suddenly appearing on a red background sometimes causes an impression of flicker or double flash. In Experiment 1, a red, green, or blue object was presented on a red, green, blue, or gray background. Participants evaluated the illusion strength in reference to the physical flicker of a gray object presented in central vision. The results show that the green or blue object presented on the red background caused the illusion. In Experiment 2, the effect of retinal eccentricity on the illusion was tested. The results showed that the illusion was weak in central vision but became stronger as the retinal eccentricity of the objects' presentation increased. In Experiment 3, optimal luminance conditions for the illusion were explored with the green and blue objects. The illusion was strong when object luminance was lower than background luminance and the optimal luminance for the blue object was lower than that for the green object. We propose a tentative theory for the illusion and discuss its cause.

Peripheral Flicker Fusion at High Luminance: Beyond the Ferry-Porter Law.

Project description:The relationship between luminous intensity and the maximum frequency of flicker that can be detected defines the limits of the temporal-resolving ability of the human visual system, and characterizing it has important theoretical and practical applications; particularly for determining the optimal refresh rate for visual displays that would avoid the visibility of flicker and other temporal artifacts. Previous research has shown that this relationship is best described by the Ferry-Porter law, which states that critical flicker fusion (CFF) increases as a linear function of log retinal illuminance. The existing experimental data showed that this law holds for a wide range of stimuli and up to 10,000 Trolands; however, beyond this, it was not clear if the CFF continued to increase linearly or if the function saturated. Our aim was to extend the experimental data available to higher light intensities than previously reported in the literature. For this, we measured the peripheral CFF at a range of illuminances over six orders of magnitude. Our results showed that for up to 104 Trolands, the data conformed to the Ferry-Porter law with a similar slope, as previously established for this eccentricity; however, at higher intensities, the CFF function flattens and saturates at ~90 Hz for a target size of 5.7 degrees, and at ~100 Hz for a target of 10 degrees of angular size. These experimental results could prove valuable for the design of brighter visual displays and illumination sources that are temporally modulated.

Anisotropy in the peripheral visual field based on pupil response to the glare illusion.

Project description:Visual-field (VF) anisotropy has been investigated in terms of spatial resolution of attention, spatial frequency, and semantic processing. Brightness perception has also been reported to vary between VFs. However, the influence of VF anisotropy on brightness perception using pupillometry has not been investigated. The present study measured participants' pupil size during glare illusion, in which converging luminance gradients evoke brightness enhancement and a glowing impression on the central white area of the stimulus, and halo stimuli, in which the same physical brightness of the glare illusion is used with a diverging luminance pattern. The results revealed greater stimulus-evoked pupillary dilation and glare-related dilated pupil reduction in the upper VF (UVF) compared with other VFs and halo-related pupillary changes, respectively. The stimulus-evoked pupillary dilation was affected by poor contrast sensitivity. However, owing to the superior cognitive bias formed by statistical regularity in natural scene processing of the glare illusion in the UVF, we found reduced pupillary dilation compared with the response to halo stimuli and the response from other VFs. These findings offer valuable insight into a method to reduce the potential glare effect of any VF anisotropy induced by the glare effect experienced in daily vision. An important practical implication of our study may be in informing the design of applications aimed at improving nighttime driving behavior. We also believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because it offers valuable insights on VF anisotropy using evidence from pupillometry and the glare illusion.

Visual discomfort and flicker.

Project description:Flickering lights can be uncomfortable to look at and can induce seizures in observers with photosensitive epilepsy. However, the temporal characteristics contributing to these effects are not fully known. In the spatial domain, one identified source of visual discomfort is when images have Fourier amplitude spectra that deviate from the natural (?1/frequency, 1/f) statistical characteristics of natural scenes, especially if they contain excess energy at the medium frequencies at which the visual system is most sensitive. We tested for analogous effects in the temporal domain, manipulating both the amplitude and phase spectra of the flicker. Participants judged the relative discomfort of temporal luminance variations in a pair of uniform 17° fields with different temporal modulations. In general, discomfort increased with deviations from natural amplitude spectra, particularly those with excess energy at medium frequencies or biased toward sharper spectra. These ratings of discomfort were also consistent with ratings of how natural the modulations appeared. However, the temporal discomfort judgments were also strongly affected by the phase spectra of the flicker, with fixed vs. random spectra producing very different responses. This was not due to the perceived regularity or predictability of the flicker, but could arise from a number of other potential factors. Our findings suggest that, like spatial patterns, visual discomfort in time-varying patterns depends in part on how similar they are to the amplitude spectra of temporal variations in the natural visual environment, but also point to the critical role of the phase spectrum in the perceived discomfort of flicker.

Interactions of flicker and motion.

Project description:We present a series of novel observations about interactions between flicker and motion that lead to three distinct perceptual effects. We use the term flicker to describe alternating changes in a stimulus' luminance or color (i.e. a circle that flickers from black to white and visa-versa). When objects flicker, three distinct phenomena can be observed: (1) Flicker Induced Motion (FLIM) in which a single, stationary object, appears to move when it flickers at certain rates; (2) Flicker Induced Motion Suppression (FLIMS) in which a moving object appears to be stationary when it flickers at certain rates, and (3) Flicker-Induced Induced-Motion (FLIIM) in which moving objects that are flickering induce another flickering stationary object to appear to move. Across four psychophysical experiments, we characterize key stimulus parameters underlying these flicker-motion interactions. Interactions were strongest in the periphery and at flicker frequencies above 10 Hz. Induced motion occurred not just for luminance flicker, but for isoluminant color changes as well. We also found that the more physically moving objects there were, the more motion induction to stationary objects occurred. We present demonstrations that the effects reported here cannot be fully accounted for by eye movements: we show that the perceived motion of multiple stationary objects that are induced to move via flicker can appear to move independently and in random directions, whereas eye movements would have caused all of the objects to appear to move coherently. These effects highlight the fundamental role of spatiotemporal dynamics in the representation of motion and the intimate relationship between flicker and motion.

Neuroretinal dysfunction revealed by a flicker electroretinogram correlated with peripheral nerve dysfunction and parameters of atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes.

Project description:Aims/introductionDiabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) develops in the early stage of diabetes. However, no common diagnostic protocol has yet been established. Here, to verify that the flicker electroretinogram using a hand-held device can detect the early dysfunction of the peripheral nervous system in patients with diabetes, we investigated the correlation between the progression of DPN and neuroretinal dysfunction.Materials and methodsIn total, 184 participants with type 1 or 2 diabetes underwent a flicker electroretinogram (ERG) using a hand-held device RETeval™ and nerve conduction study. Participants were also evaluated for intima-media thickness, ankle-brachial index, toe brachial index and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity. Parameters of the nerve conduction study were used to diagnose the severity according to Baba's classification. A multiple regression analysis was used to examine the associations of ERG parameters with the severity of DPN categorized by Baba's classification. Diagnostic properties of the device in DPN were evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic curve.ResultsA multiple regression model to predict the severity of DPN was generated using ERG. In the model, moderate-to-severe DPN was effectively diagnosed (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.692, sensitivity 56.5%, specificity 78.3%, positive predictive value 70.6%, negative predictive value 66.1%, positive likelihood ratio 2.60, negative likelihood ratio 0.56). In the patients without diabetic retinopathy, the implicit time and amplitude in ERG significantly correlated with the parameters of the nerve conduction study, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and intima-media thickness.ConclusionsElectroretinogram parameters obtained by the hand-held device successfully predict the severity of DPN. The device might be useful to evaluate DPN.

A computational model of afterimage rotation in the peripheral drift illusion based on retinal ON/OFF responses.

Project description:Human observers perceive illusory rotations after the disappearance of circularly repeating patches containing dark-to-light luminance. This afterimage rotation is a very powerful phenomenon, but little is known about the mechanisms underlying it. Here, we use a computational model to show that the afterimage rotation can be explained by a combination of fast light adaptation and the physiological architecture of the early visual system, consisting of ON- and OFF-type visual pathways. In this retinal ON/OFF model, the afterimage rotation appeared as a rotation of focus lines of retinal ON/OFF responses. Focus lines rotated clockwise on a light background, but counterclockwise on a dark background. These findings were consistent with the results of psychophysical experiments, which were also performed by us. Additionally, the velocity of the afterimage rotation was comparable with that observed in our psychophysical experiments. These results suggest that the early visual system (including the retina) is responsible for the generation of the afterimage rotation, and that this illusory rotation may be systematically misinterpreted by our high-level visual system.

Automatic capture of attention by flicker.

Project description:Visual motion captures attention, but little is known about the automaticity of these effects. Here, we tested if deviant flicker frequencies, as one form of motion, automatically capture attention. Observers searched for a vertical target among tilted distractors. Prior to the target display, a cue array of sinusoidally modulating (flickering) annuli, each surrounding one location of the subsequent target(-plus-distractors) display was presented for variable durations. Annuli either flickered all at 1 Hz (neutral condition, no-singleton cue), or a single annulus flickered at a unique frequency of 5 Hz, 10 Hz, or 15 Hz. The location of this singleton-frequency cue was uncorrelated with target location. Thus, we could measure benefits (target at cued location) and costs (target ≠ cued location) for cues of different frequencies and durations. The results showed that deviant flicker frequencies capture attention, as we observed benefits and costs, falsifying that nonspatial filtering accounted for the cueing effect. In line with automatic capture, cueing was effective in singleton (Experiment 1) and nonsingleton search tasks (Experiment 2), and is thus not dependent on ("top-down") singleton detection mode. Moreover, analysis of results ruled out trial-by-trial "swapping" of flicker frequencies from preceding target to subsequent distractor locations. Results also revealed increasing cueing effects with higher cue flicker frequency and longer duration. This indicates a significantly longer period of automatic capture by sinusoidal flicker than the typical inhibition of return observed around 250 ms after the onset of uninformative static or single-transient cues.

Negative Afterimages From Flicker-Augmented Colors.

Project description:A patch that alternates between two hues such as dark green and light blue looks greenish on a light gray surround and bluish on a dark gray surround ("flicker-augmented contrast"). Thus, when an edge alternates between two hues in the same location, the visual system selects the more salient hue-the one with the higher Michelson contrast. However, the afterimage is the same pink, driven by the time integral of the physical, not the perceptual, adapting hues and regardless of the surround luminance. So the process of edge biasing does not transfer to the mechanism that creates afterimages.

The Ring Rotation Illusion: Properties and Links of a Novel Illusion of Motion.

Project description:We report a novel visual illusion we call the Ring Rotation Illusion (RRI). When a ring of stationary points replaces a circular outline, the ring of points appears to rotate to a halt, although no actual motion has been displayed. Three experiments evaluate the clarity of the illusory rotation. Clarity decreased as the diameter of the circle and ring increased and increased as the number of points forming the ring increased. The optimal interstimulus interval (ISI) between the circle and ring was 90 ms when stimulus presentations lasted 100 ms but 0 ms with 500 ms presentations. We compare the RRI to the Motion Bridging Effect (MBE), a similar illusion in which a stationary ring of points replaces an initial ring of points that spins so rapidly it looks like a stationary outline. A rotation of the stationary ring is seen that usually matches the direction of the initial ring's invisible spin. Participants reported a slightly more frequent and clearer motion percept with the MBE than RRI. ISI manipulations had similar effects on the two illusions, but the effects of number of points and ring diameter were largely restricted to the RRI. We suggest that both the RRI and MBE motion percepts are produced by a visual heuristic that holds that the transition from an outline circle to a ring of points is plausibly explained by a rapid spin decelerating to a halt, but in the case of the MBE, an additional direction-sensitive mechanism contributes to this percept.

The Serpentine Illusion: A Visual Motion Illusion Induced by Phase-Shifted Line Gratings.

Project description:In a pattern of horizontal lines containing ± 45° zigzagging phase-shifted strips, vivid illusory motion is perceived when the pattern is translated up or down at a moderate speed. Two forms of illusory motion are seen: [i] a motion "racing" along the diagonal interface between the strips and [ii] lateral (sideways) motion of the strip sections. We found the relative salience of these two illusory motions to be strongly influenced by the vertical spacing and length of the line gratings, and the period length of the zigzag strips. Both illusory motions are abolished when the abutting strips are interleaved, separated by a gap or when a real line is superimposed at the interface. Illusory motion is also severely weakened when equiluminant colored grating lines are used. Illusory motion perception is fully restored at < 20% luminance contrast. Using adaptation, we find that line-ends alone are insufficient for illusory motion perception, and that both physical carrier motion and line orientation are required. We finally test a classical spatiotemporal energy model of V1 cells that exhibit direction tuning changes that are consistent with the direction of illusory motion. Taking this data together, we constructed a new visual illusion and surmise its origin to interactions of spatial and temporal energy of the lines and line-ends preferentially driving the magnocellular pathway.
