<i>Anopheles gambiae</i> mosquitoes transmit the human malaria parasite <i>Plasmodium falciparum</i>, which causes the majority of fatal malaria cases worldwide. The hematophagous lifestyle defines mosquito reproductive biology and is exploited by <i>P. falciparum</i> for its own sexual reproduction and transmission.
