Electric-field control of anomalous and topological Hall effects in oxide bilayer thin films.

ABSTRACT: One of the key goals in spintronics is to tame the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) that links spin and motion of electrons, giving rise to intriguing magneto-transport properties in itinerant magnets. Prominent examples of such SOC-based phenomena are the anomalous and topological Hall effects. However, controlling them with electric fields has remained unachieved since an electric field tends to be screened in itinerant magnets. Here we demonstrate that both anomalous and topological Hall effects can be modulated by electric fields in oxide heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic SrRuO3 and nonmagnetic SrIrO3. We observe a clear electric field effect only when SrIrO3 is inserted between SrRuO3 and a gate dielectric. Our results establish that strong SOC of nonmagnetic materials such as SrIrO3 is essential in electrical tuning of these Hall effects and possibly other SOC-related phenomena.

Electric control of topological phase transitions in Dirac semimetal thin films.

Project description:Dirac semimetals host three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermion states in the bulk of crystalline solids, which can be viewed as 3D analogs of graphene. Owing to their relativistic spectrum and unique topological character, these materials hold great promise for fundamental-physics exploration and practical applications. Particularly, they are expected to be ideal parent compounds for engineering various other topological states of matter. In this report, we investigate the possibility to induce and control the topological quantum spin Hall phase in a Dirac semimetal thin film by using a vertical electric field. We show that through the interplay between the quantum confinement effect and the field-induced coupling between sub-bands, the sub-band gap can be tuned and inverted. During this process, the system undergoes a topological phase transition between a trivial band insulator and a quantum spin Hall insulator. Consequently, one can switch the topological edge channels on and off by purely electrical means, making the system a promising platform for constructing topological field effect transistors.

Edge states and integer quantum Hall effect in topological insulator thin films.

Project description:The integer quantum Hall effect is a topological state of quantum matter in two dimensions, and has recently been observed in three-dimensional topological insulator thin films. Here we study the Landau levels and edge states of surface Dirac fermions in topological insulators under strong magnetic field. We examine the formation of the quantum plateaux of the Hall conductance and find two different patterns, in one pattern the filling number covers all integers while only odd integers in the other. We focus on the quantum plateau closest to zero energy and demonstrate the breakdown of the quantum spin Hall effect resulting from structure inversion asymmetry. The phase diagrams of the quantum Hall states are presented as functions of magnetic field, gate voltage and chemical potential. This work establishes an intuitive picture of the edge states to understand the integer quantum Hall effect for Dirac electrons in topological insulator thin films.

Reversible, Electric-Field Induced Magneto-Ionic Control of Magnetism in Mesoporous Cobalt Ferrite Thin Films.

Project description:The magnetic properties of mesoporous cobalt ferrite films can be largely tuned by the application of an electric field using a liquid dielectric electrolyte. By applying a negative voltage, the cobalt ferrite becomes reduced, leading to an increase in saturation magnetization of 15% (MS) and reduction in coercivity (HC) between 5-28%, depending on the voltage applied (-10 V to -50 V). These changes are mainly non-volatile so after removal of -10 V MS remains 12% higher (and HC 5% smaller) than the pristine sample. All changes can then be reversed with a positive voltage to recover the initial properties even after the application of -50 V. Similar studies were done on analogous films without induced porosity and the effects were much smaller, underscoring the importance of nanoporosity in our system. The different mechanisms possibly responsible for the observed effects are discussed and we conclude that our observations are compatible with voltage-driven oxygen migration (i.e., the magneto-ionic effect).

Electric Field Assisted Self-Assembly of Viruses into Colored Thin Films.

Project description:Filamentous viruses called M13 bacteriophages are promising materials for devices with thin film coatings because phages are functionalizable, and they can self-assemble into smectic helicoidal nanofilament structures. However, the existing "pulling" approach to align the nanofilaments is slow and limits potential commercialization of this technology. This study uses an applied electric field to rapidly align the nanostructures in a fixed droplet. The electric field reduces pinning of the three-phase contact line, allowing it to recede at a constant rate. Atomic force microscopy reveals that the resulting aligned structures resemble those produced via the pulling method. The field-assisted alignment results in concentric color bands quantified with image analysis of red, green, and blue line profiles. The alignment technique shown here could reduce self-assembly time from hours to minutes and lend itself to scalable manufacturing techniques such as inkjet printing.

Room-temperature terahertz anomalous Hall effect in Weyl antiferromagnet Mn<sub>3</sub>Sn thin films.

Project description:Antiferromagnetic spin motion at terahertz (THz) frequencies attracts growing interests for fast spintronics, however, their smaller responses to external field inhibit device application. Recently the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn, a Weyl semimetal candidate, was reported to show large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature comparable to ferromagnets. Dynamical aspect of such large responses is an important issue to be clarified for future THz data processing. Here the THz anomalous Hall conductivity in Mn3Sn thin films is investigated by polarization-resolved spectroscopy. Large anomalous Hall conductivity [Formula: see text] at THz frequencies is clearly observed as polarization rotation. A peculiar temperature dependence corresponding to the breaking/recovery of symmetry in the spin texture is also discussed. Observation of the THz AHE at room temperature demonstrates the ultrafast readout for the antiferromagnetic spintronics using Mn3Sn, and will also open new avenue for studying nonequilibrium dynamics in Weyl antiferromagnets.

Strain engineering of the magnetic multipole moments and anomalous Hall effect in pyrochlore iridate thin films.

Project description:The recent observation of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) without notable magnetization in antiferromagnets has suggested that ferromagnetic ordering is not a necessary condition. Thus, recent theoretical studies have proposed that higher-rank magnetic multipoles formed by clusters of spins (cluster multipoles) can generate the AHE without magnetization. Despite such an intriguing proposal, controlling the unconventional AHE by inducing these cluster multipoles has not been investigated. Here, we demonstrate that strain can manipulate the hidden Berry curvature effect by inducing the higher-rank cluster multipoles in spin-orbit-coupled antiferromagnets. Observing the large AHE on fully strained antiferromagnetic Nd2Ir2O7 thin films, we prove that strain-induced cluster T 1-octupoles are the only source of observed AHE. Our results provide a previously unidentified pathway for generating the unconventional AHE via strain-induced magnetic structures and establish a platform for exploring undiscovered topological phenomena via strain in correlated materials.

Topological quantum phase transitions driven by external electric fields in Sb₂Te₃ thin films.

Project description:Using first-principles calculations, we show that topological quantum phase transitions are driven by external electric fields in thin films of Sb(2)Te(3). The film, as the applied electric field normal to its surface increases, is transformed from a normal insulator to a topological insulator or vice versa depending on the film thickness. We identify the band topology by directly calculating the Z(2) invariant from electronic wave functions. The dispersion of edge states is also found to be consistent with the bulk band topology in view of the bulk-boundary correspondence. We present possible applications of the topological phase transition as an on/off switch of the topologically protected edge states in nano-scale devices.

Optical control of spin-polarized photocurrent in topological insulator thin films.

Project description:Dirac electrons in topological insulators (TIs) provide one possible avenue to achieve control of photocurrents and spin currents without the need to apply external fields by utilizing characteristic spin-momentum locking. However, for TI crystals with electrodes it is actually difficult to characterize the net flow of spin-polarized photocurrents because of the coexistence of surface carriers and bulk carriers generated by optical excitations. We demonstrate here that the net flow directions of spin-polarized photocurrents in TI polycrystalline thin films without electrodes can be precisely and intentionally controlled by the polarization of the excitation pulse alone, which is characterized by performing time-domain terahertz (THz) wave measurements and time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr rotation measurements that are non-contact methods. We show that the amplitudes of s-polarized THz waves radiated from photocurrents under right- and left-circularly polarized excitations are inverted relative to one another. Moreover, we observe the inversion of time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr rotation signals between the two excitations. Our results will open the way as innovative methods to control spin-polarized electrons in optoelectronic and spintronic TI devices without the need to apply external fields.

Two-component anomalous Hall effect in a magnetically doped topological insulator.

Project description:The anomalous Hall (AH) effect measurement has emerged as a powerful tool to gain deep insights into magnetic materials, such as ferromagnetic metals, magnetic semiconductors, and magnetic topological insulators (TIs). In Mn-doped Bi2Se3, however, the AH effect has never been reported despite a lot of previous studies. Here we report the observation of AH effect in (Bi,Mn)2Se3 thin films and show that the sign of AH resistances changes from positive to negative as the Mn concentration is increased. The positive and negative AH resistances are found to coexist in a crossover regime. Such a two-component AH effect and the sign reversal can also be obtained by electrical gating of lightly doped samples. Our results provide an important basis for understanding the puzzling interplay between the surface states, the bulk states, and various magnetic doping effects, as well as competing magnetic orders in magnetically doped TIs.

Electric Field-aided Selective Activation for Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide Thin Film Transistors.

Project description:A new technique is proposed for the activation of low temperature amorphous InGaZnO thin film transistor (a-IGZO TFT) backplanes through application of a bias voltage and annealing at 130?°C simultaneously. In this 'electrical activation', the effects of annealing under bias are selectively focused in the channel region. Therefore, electrical activation can be an effective method for lower backplane processing temperatures from 280?°C to 130?°C. Devices fabricated with this method exhibit equivalent electrical properties to those of conventionally-fabricated samples. These results are analyzed electrically and thermodynamically using infrared microthermography. Various bias voltages are applied to the gate, source, and drain electrodes while samples are annealed at 130?°C for 1?hour. Without conventional high temperature annealing or electrical activation, current-voltage curves do not show transfer characteristics. However, electrically activated a-IGZO TFTs show superior electrical characteristics, comparable to the reference TFTs annealed at 280?°C for 1?hour. This effect is a result of the lower activation energy, and efficient transfer of electrical and thermal energy to a-IGZO TFTs. With this approach, superior low-temperature a-IGZO TFTs are fabricated successfully.
