Project description:An efficient amidation method between readily available 1,1-dicyanoalkanes and either chiral or nonchiral amines was realized simply with molecular oxygen and a carbonate base. This oxidative protocol can be applied to both sterically and electronically challenging substrates in a highly chemoselective, practical, and rapid manner. The use of cyclopropyl and thioether substrates support the radical formation of ?-peroxy malononitrile species, which can cyclize to dioxiranes that can monooxygenate malononitrile ?-carbanions to afford activated acyl cyanides capable of reacting with amine nucleophiles.

Oxidative Amide Coupling from Functionally Diverse Alcohols and Amines Using Aerobic Copper/Nitroxyl Catalysis.

Project description:The aerobic Cu/ABNO catalyzed oxidative coupling of alcohols and amines is highlighted in the synthesis of amide bonds in diverse drug-like molecules (ABNO=9-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane N-oxyl). The robust method leverages the privileged reactivity of alcohols bearing electronegative hetero- atoms (O, F, N, Cl) in the ?-position. The reaction tolerates over 20 unique functional groups and is demonstrated on a 15?mmol scale under air. Steric constraints of the catalyst allow for chemoselective amidation of primary amines in the presence of secondary amines. All catalyst components are commercially available, and the reaction proceeds under mild conditions with retention of stereocenters in both reaction partners, while producing only water as a by-product.

Oxidative ?-C-H sulfonylation of cyclic amines.

Project description:A transition metal-free strategy for the dehydrogenative ?-sulfonylation of tertiary cyclic amines is described. N-Iodosuccinimide facilitates regioselective oxidative sulfonylation at C-H bonds positioned ? to the nitrogen atom of tertiary amines, installing enaminyl sulfone functionality in cyclic systems. Mild reaction conditions, broad functional group tolerance and a wide substrate scope are demonstrated. The nucleophilic character of the enaminyl sulfone is harnessed, demonstrating potential application for scaffold diversification.

Sulfonamide Synthesis through Electrochemical Oxidative Coupling of Amines and Thiols.

Project description:Sulfonamides are key motifs in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, spurring the continuous development of novel and efficient synthetic methods to access these functional groups. Herein, we report an environmentally benign electrochemical method which enables the oxidative coupling between thiols and amines, two readily available and inexpensive commodity chemicals. The transformation is completely driven by electricity, does not require any sacrificial reagent or additional catalysts and can be carried out in only 5 min. Hydrogen is formed as a benign byproduct at the counter electrode. Owing to the mild reaction conditions, the reaction displays a broad substrate scope and functional group compatibility.

Oxidative dehydrogenative couplings of pyrazol-5-amines selectively forming azopyrroles.

Project description:New oxidative dehydrogenative couplings of pyrazol-5-amines for the selective synthesis of azopyrrole derivatives have been described. The former reaction simultaneously installs C-I and N-N bonds through iodination and oxidation, whereas the latter involved a copper-catalyzed oxidative coupling process. The resulting iodo-substituted azopyrroles were employed by treatment with various terminal alkynes through Sonogashira cross-coupling leading to new azo compounds.

Oxidative Addition of Water, Alcohols, and Amines in Palladium Catalysis.

Project description:The homolytic cleavage of O-H and N-H or weak C-H bonds is a key elementary step in redox catalysis, but is thought to be unfeasible for palladium. In stark contrast, reported here is the room temperature and reversible oxidative addition of water, isopropanol, hexafluoroisopropanol, phenol, and aniline to a palladium(0) complex with a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) and a labile pyridino ligand, as is also the case in popular N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) palladium(II) precatalysts. The oxidative addition of protic solvents or adventitious water switches the chemoselectivity in catalysis with alkynes through activation of the terminal C-H bond. Most salient, the homolytic activation of alcohols and amines allows atom-efficient, additive-free cross-coupling and transfer hydrogenation under mild reaction conditions with usually unreactive, yet desirable reagents, including esters and bis(pinacolato)diboron.

Effects of Interfaces of Goethite and Humic Acid-Goethite Complex on Microbial Degradation of Methyl Parathion.

Project description:Microbial degradation plays an essential role in the removal of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) dispersed in soil and sediment, and its performance is greatly affected by mineral particles which regulate HOCs bioavailability by interfacial adsorption. Likewise, bacteria cells attach to the surfaces of mineral particles as well but how bacterial attachment affects biodegradation is largely unknown. Here we report inhibitory effects of goethite and humic acid (HA)-goethite complex addition on microbial degradation of methyl parathion (MP). Using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we observed that the adhesion of bacterial cells responsible for MP degradation on goethite occurred and the adhesive strength increased over time. We then replaced goethite with phosphate-adsorbed goethite to weaken the goethite-bacteria association and the inhibition of MP biodegradation was alleviated. These results suggested the formation of goethite-bacteria association hinder MP biodegradation. Meanwhile, our results showed that HA coating prevented bacterial attachment on goethite particles along with a drastically increased MP adsorption by goethite. The combined effect would lead to decreased mass fluxes of MP to bacterial cells and could represent another mechanism responsible for the decreased degradation rate observed in the current study.
