ABSTRACT: In the present paper we propose an improved class of estimators in the presence of measurement error and non-response under stratified random sampling for estimating the finite population mean. The theoretical and numerical studies reveal that the proposed class of estimators performs better than other existing estimators.

Project description:We study a class of semiparametric skewed distributions arising when the sample selection process produces non-randomly sampled observations. Based on semiparametric theory and taking into account the symmetric nature of the population distribution, we propose both consistent estimators, i.e. robust to model mis-specification, and efficient estimators, i.e. reaching the minimum possible estimation variance, of the location of the symmetric population. We demonstrate the theoretical properties of our estimators through asymptotic analysis and assess their finite sample performance through simulations. We also implement our methodology on a real data example of ambulatory expenditures to illustrate the applicability of the estimators in practice.

Estimation of finite population mean for a sensitive variable using dual auxiliary information in the presence of measurement errors.

Project description:In this study, we propose a new improved estimator of population mean for the sensitive variable in the presence of measurement error under simple and stratified random sampling. This estimator accounts the auxiliary information as well as the ranks of the auxiliary variable. From theoretical and numerical studies it is shown that a new improved estimator performs better than the existing estimators under study.

COVID-19 prevalence estimation by random sampling in population - optimal sample pooling under varying assumptions about true prevalence.

Project description:BackgroundThe number of confirmed COVID-19 cases divided by population size is used as a coarse measurement for the burden of disease in a population. However, this fraction depends heavily on the sampling intensity and the various test criteria used in different jurisdictions, and many sources indicate that a large fraction of cases tend to go undetected.MethodsEstimates of the true prevalence of COVID-19 in a population can be made by random sampling and pooling of RT-PCR tests. Here I use simulations to explore how experiment sample size and degrees of sample pooling impact precision of prevalence estimates and potential for minimizing the total number of tests required to get individual-level diagnostic results.ResultsSample pooling can greatly reduce the total number of tests required for prevalence estimation. In low-prevalence populations, it is theoretically possible to pool hundreds of samples with only marginal loss of precision. Even when the true prevalence is as high as 10% it can be appropriate to pool up to 15 samples. Sample pooling can be particularly beneficial when the test has imperfect specificity by providing more accurate estimates of the prevalence than an equal number of individual-level tests.ConclusionSample pooling should be considered in COVID-19 prevalence estimation efforts.

Conditional Density Estimation in Measurement Error Problems.

Project description:This paper is motivated by a wide range of background correction problems in gene array data analysis, where the raw gene expression intensities are measured with error. Estimating a conditional density function from the contaminated expression data is a key aspect of statistical inference and visualization in these studies. We propose re-weighted deconvolution kernel methods to estimate the conditional density function in an additive error model, when the error distribution is known as well as when it is unknown. Theoretical properties of the proposed estimators are investigated with respect to the mean absolute error from a "double asymptotic" view. Practical rules are developed for the selection of smoothing-parameters. Simulated examples and an application to an Illumina bead microarray study are presented to illustrate the viability of the methods.

Corruption of the Pearson correlation coefficient by measurement error and its estimation, bias, and correction under different error models.

Project description:Correlation coefficients are abundantly used in the life sciences. Their use can be limited to simple exploratory analysis or to construct association networks for visualization but they are also basic ingredients for sophisticated multivariate data analysis methods. It is therefore important to have reliable estimates for correlation coefficients. In modern life sciences, comprehensive measurement techniques are used to measure metabolites, proteins, gene-expressions and other types of data. All these measurement techniques have errors. Whereas in the old days, with simple measurements, the errors were also simple, that is not the case anymore. Errors are heterogeneous, non-constant and not independent. This hampers the quality of the estimated correlation coefficients seriously. We will discuss the different types of errors as present in modern comprehensive life science data and show with theory, simulations and real-life data how these affect the correlation coefficients. We will briefly discuss ways to improve the estimation of such coefficients.

Stratified Sampling of Neighborhood Sections for Population Estimation: A Case Study of Bo City, Sierra Leone.

Project description:There is a need for better estimators of population size in places that have undergone rapid growth and where collection of census data is difficult. We explored simulated estimates of urban population based on survey data from Bo, Sierra Leone, using two approaches: (1) stratified sampling from across 20 neighborhoods and (2) stratified single-stage cluster sampling of only four randomly-sampled neighborhoods. The stratification variables evaluated were (a) occupants per individual residence, (b) occupants per neighborhood, and (c) residential structures per neighborhood. For method (1), stratification variable (a) yielded the most accurate re-estimate of the current total population. Stratification variable (c), which can be estimated from aerial photography and zoning type verification, and variable (b), which could be ascertained by surveying a limited number of households, increased the accuracy of method (2). Small household-level surveys with appropriate sampling methods can yield reasonably accurate estimations of urban populations.

Estimation of Heterogeneous Restricted Mean Survival Time Using Random Forest.

Project description:Estimation and prediction of heterogeneous restricted mean survival time (hRMST) is of great clinical importance, which can provide an easily interpretable and clinically meaningful summary of the survival function in the presence of censoring and individual covariates. The existing methods for the modeling of hRMST rely on proportional hazards or other parametric assumptions on the survival distribution. In this paper, we propose a random forest based estimation of hRMST for right-censored survival data with covariates and prove a central limit theorem for the resulting estimator. In addition, we present a computationally efficient construction for the confidence interval of hRMST. Our simulations show that the resulting confidence intervals have the correct coverage probability of the hRMST, and the random forest based estimate of hRMST has smaller prediction errors than the parametric models when the models are mis-specified. We apply the method to the ovarian cancer data set from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project to predict hRMST and show an improved prediction performance over the existing methods. Measurement protocols, random-variable-valued measurements, and response process error: Estimation and inference when sample data are not deterministic.

Project description:Random-variable-valued measurements (RVVMs) are proposed as a new framework for treating measurement processes that generate non-deterministic sample data. They operate by assigning a probability measure to each observed sample instantiation of a global measurement process for some particular random quantity of interest, thus allowing for the explicit quantification of response process error. Common methodologies to date treat only measurement processes that generate fixed values for each sample unit, thus generating full (though possibly inaccurate) information on the random quantity of interest. However, many applied research situations in the non-experimental sciences naturally contain response process error, e.g. when psychologists assess patient agreement with various diagnostic survey items or when conservation biologists perform formal assessments to classify species-at-risk. Ignoring the sample-unit-level uncertainty of response process error in such measurement processes can greatly compromise the quality of resulting inferences. In this paper, a general theory of RVVMs is proposed to handle response process error, and several applications are considered.

Estimation of Stratified Mark-Specific Proportional Hazards Models under Two-Phase Sampling with Application to HIV Vaccine Efficacy Trials.

Project description:An objective of preventive HIV vaccine efficacy trials is to understand how vaccine-induced immune responses to specific protein sequences of HIV-1 associate with subsequent infection with specific sequences of HIV, where the immune response biomarkers are measured in vaccine recipients via a two-phase sampling design. Motivated by this objective, we investigate the stratified mark-specific proportional hazards model under two-phase biomarker sampling, where the mark is the genetic distance of an infecting HIV-1 sequence to an HIV-1 sequence represented inside the vaccine. Estimation and inference procedures based on inverse probability weighting of complete-cases and on augmented inverse probability weighting of complete-cases are developed. Asymptotic properties of the estimators are derived and their finite-sample performances are examined in simulation studies. The methods are shown to have satisfactory performance, and are applied to the RV144 vaccine trial to assess whether immune response correlates of HIV-1 infection are stronger for HIV-1 infecting sequences similar to the vaccine than for sequences distant from the vaccine. Addressing Measurement Error in Random Forests Using Quantitative Bias Analysis.

Project description:Although variables are often measured with error, the impact of measurement error on machine-learning predictions is seldom quantified. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of measurement error on the performance of random-forest models and variable importance. First, we assessed the impact of misclassification (i.e., measurement error of categorical variables) of predictors on random-forest model performance (e.g., accuracy, sensitivity) and variable importance (mean decrease in accuracy) using data from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (2001-2003). Second, we created simulated data sets in which we knew the true model performance and variable importance measures and could verify that quantitative bias analysis was recovering the truth in misclassified versions of the data sets. Our findings showed that measurement error in the data used to construct random forests can distort model performance and variable importance measures and that bias analysis can recover the correct results. This study highlights the utility of applying quantitative bias analysis in machine learning to quantify the impact of measurement error on study results.
