Project description:This paper studies the equilibrium and the social optimum in an economy where knowledge diffusion interacts with disease transmission. Knowledge increases productivity and is diffused through learning. A learner chooses the intensities in normal learning, isolated learning and production. Normal learning is more effective than isolated learning but requires a learner to contact a teacher. A higher intensity in normal learning increases a learner's contact rate with a teacher, thereby speeding up both knowledge diffusion and the transmission of an infectious pathogen. An infection reduces productivity and possibly results in death. Calibrating the pathogen to Covid-19, the model shows that the unexpected arrival of the pathogen induces a susceptible learner to adjust the normal learning intensity in a V-shaped pattern over time. Aggregate output also follows V-shaped adjustments. Switching from the equilibrium to the social optimum reduces infections and deaths substantially and increases social welfare. I also examine temporary lockdowns in the equilibrium.

Project description:BackgroundVarious models have been applied to predict the trend of the epidemic since the outbreak of COVID-19.MethodsIn this study, we designed a dynamic graph model, not for precisely predicting the number of infected cases, but for a glance of the dynamics under a public epidemic emergency situation and of different contributing factors.ResultsWe demonstrated the impact of asymptomatic transmission in this outbreak and showed the effectiveness of city lockdown to halt virus spread within a city. We further illustrated that sudden emergence of a large number of cases could overwhelm the city medical system, and external medical aids are critical to not only containing the further spread of the virus but also reducing fatality.ConclusionOur model simulation showed that highly populated modern cities are particularly vulnerable and lessons learned in China could facilitate other countries to plan the proactive and decisive actions. We shall pay close attention to the asymptomatic transmission being suggested by rapidly accumulating evidence as dramatic changes in quarantine protocol are required to contain SARS-CoV-2 from spreading globally.Supplementary materialsThe supplementary materials can be found online with this article at 10.1007/s40484-020-0215-4.

Project description:Hair follicle morphogenesis during embryonic development is driven by the formation of hair follicle germs (HFGs) via interactions between epithelial and mesenchymal cells. Bioengineered HFGs are potential tissue grafts for hair regenerative medicine because they can replicate interactions and hair follicle morphogenesis after transplantation. However, a mass preparation approach for HFGs is necessary for clinical applications, given that thousands of de novo hair follicles are required to improve the appearance of a single patient with alopecia. In this study, we developed a microfluidics-based approach for the large-scale preparation of HFGs. A simple flow-focusing microfluidic device allowed collagen solutions containing epithelial and mesenchymal cells to flow and generate collagen microbeads with distinct Janus structures. During the 3 days of culture, the collagen beads contracted owing to cellular traction forces, resulting in collagen- and cell-dense HFGs. The transplantation of HFGs into nude mice resulted in highly efficient de novo hair follicle regeneration. This method provides a scalable and robust tissue graft preparation approach for hair regeneration.

Project description:Hair regenerative medicine has emerged as a promising approach for the treatment of severe hair loss. Recent advances in three-dimensional tissue engineering, such as formation of hair follicle germs (HFGs), have considerably improved hair regeneration after transplantation in animal models. Here, we proposed an approach for fabricating HFGs containing vascular endothelial cells. Epithelial, dermal papilla, and vascular endothelial cells initially formed a single aggregate, which subsequently became a dumbbell-shaped HFG, wherein the vascular endothelial cells localized in the region of dermal papilla cells. The HFGs containing vascular endothelial cells exhibited higher expression of hair morphogenesis-related genes in vitro, along with higher levels of hair shaft regeneration upon transplantation to the dorsal side of nude mice, than those without vascular endothelial cells. The generated hair follicles represented functional characteristics, such as piloerection, as well as morphological characteristics comparable to those of natural hair shafts. This approach may provide a promising strategy for fabricating tissue grafts with higher hair inductivity for hair regenerative medicine.

Project description:According to (a) the beauty ideal of a full head of hair and (b) the physical attractiveness stereotype (PAS; "what is beautiful is good"), bald men should appear less attractive than nonbald men, not only physically but also socially. To explain inconsistent results on this prediction in previous research, we suggest two antagonistic processes: the automatic activation of the PAS at the implicit level and its suppression at the explicit level, the latter process selectively triggered by individuating information about the target person. In line with this account, we only found negative social attractiveness ratings for bald men by same-aged women when individuating target information was lacking (Experiment 1). In contrast, irrespective of whether individuating information was available or not, we reliably found evidence for the PAS in different implicit paradigms (the implicit association test in Experiment 2 and a source monitoring task in Experiment 3). We conclude that individuating information about bald men suppresses PAS application, but not PAS activation.

Project description:Hypoxia is a state of inadequate supply of oxygen. Increasing evidence indicates that a hypoxic environment is strongly associated with abnormal organ development. Oxygen nanobubbles (ONBs) are newly developed nanomaterials that can deliver oxygen to developing tissues, including hypoxic cells. However, the mechanisms through which nanobubbles recover hypoxic tissues, such as developing tooth germs remain to be identified. In this study, tooth germs were cultured in various conditions: CO2 chamber, hypoxic chamber, and with 20% ONBs for 3 h. The target stages were at the cap stage (all soft tissue) and bell stage (hard tissue starts to form). Hypoxic tooth germs were recovered with 20% ONBs in the media, similar to the tooth germs incubated in a CO2 chamber (normoxic condition). The tooth germs under hypoxic conditions underwent apoptosis both at the cap and bell stages, and ONBs rescued the damaged tooth germs in both the cap and bell stages. Using kidney transplantation for hard tissue formation in vivo, amelogenesis and dentinogenesis imperfecta in hypoxic conditions at the bell stage were rescued with ONBs. Furthermore, glucose uptake by tooth germs was highly upregulated under hypoxic conditions, and was restored with ONBs to normoxia levels. Our findings indicate that the strategies to make use of ONBs for efficient oxygen targeted delivery can restore cellular processes, such as cell proliferation and apoptosis, glucose uptake, and hypomineralization in hypoxic environments.

Project description:Among four proposed origins of individualism-collectivism, modernization theory, rice versus wheat theory, climato-economic theory, and pathogen stress theory, the latter has gained more attention in cross-cultural and evolutionary psychology. Since the parasite stress theory of values and sociality makes a connection between infectious diseases and cultural orientations, it gained even more popularity during the COVID pandemic. But despite extensive research on parasite stress theory, it is not still clear what kind of infectious disease contributes more to the emergence of cultures, what are the possible mechanisms through which pathogenic threat gives rise to cultural systems, and how parasite stress might affect vertical vs. horizontal dimensions of individualism-collectivism. This review summarizes and integrates major findings of parasite stress theory related to individualism-collectivism and its closely related variables and discusses future directions that researchers can take to answer the remaining questions.

Project description:Heritability is often estimated by decomposing the variance of a trait into genetic and other factors. Interpreting such variance decompositions, however, is not straightforward. In particular, there is an ongoing debate on the importance of genetic factors in cancer development, even though heritability estimates exist. Here we show that heritability estimates contain information on the distribution of absolute risk due to genetic differences. The approach relies on the assumptions underlying the conventional heritability of liability model. We also suggest a model unrelated to heritability estimates. By applying these strategies, we describe the distribution of absolute genetic risk for 15 common cancers. We highlight the considerable inequality in genetic risk of cancer using different metrics, e.g., the Gini Index and quantile ratios which are frequently used in economics. For all these cancers, the estimated inequality in genetic risk is larger than the inequality in income in the USA.
