Monodisperse Formamidinium Lead Bromide Nanocrystals with Bright and Stable Green Photoluminescence.

ABSTRACT: Bright green emitters with adjustable photoluminescence (PL) maxima in the range of 530-535 nm and full-width at half-maxima (fwhm) of <25 nm are particularly desirable for applications in television displays and related technologies. Toward this goal, we have developed a facile synthesis of highly monodisperse, cubic-shaped formamidinium lead bromide nanocrystals (FAPbBr3 NCs) with perovskite crystal structure, tunable PL in the range of 470-540 nm by adjusting the nanocrystal size (5-12 nm), high quantum yield (QY) of up to 85% and PL fwhm of <22 nm. High QYs are also retained in films of FAPbBr3 NCs. In addition, these films exhibit low thresholds of 14 ± 2 ?J cm-2 for amplified spontaneous emission.

Aluminum-Doped Cesium Lead Bromide Perovskite Nanocrystals with Stable Blue Photoluminescence Used for Display Backlight.

Project description:Bright and stable blue emitters with narrow full-width at half-maxima are particularly desirable for applications in television displays and related technologies. Here, this study shows that doping aluminum (Al3+) ion into CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) using AlBr3 can afford lead-halide perovskites NCs with stable blue photoluminescence. First, theoretical and experimental analyses reveal that the extended band gap and quantum confinement effect of elongated shape give rise to the desirable blueshifted emission. Second, the aluminum ion incorporation path is rationalized qualitatively by invoking fundamental considerations about binding relations in AlBr3 and its dimer. Finally, the absence of anion-exchange effect is corroborated when green CsPbBr3 and blue Al:CsPbBr3 NCs are mixed. Combinations of the above two NCs with red-emitting CdSe@ZnS NCs result in UV-pumped white light-emitting diodes (LED) with an National Television System Committee (NTSC) value of 116% and ITU-R Recommendation B.T. 2020 (Rec. 2020) of 87%. The color coordinates of the white LED are optimized at (0.32, 0.34) in CIE 1931. The results suggest that low-cost, earth-abundant, solution-processable Al-doped perovskite NCs can be promising candidate materials for blue down-conversion layer in backlit displays.

High brightness formamidinium lead bromide perovskite nanocrystal light emitting devices.

Project description:Formamidinium lead halide (FAPbX3) has attracted greater attention and is more prominent recently in photovoltaic devices due to its broad absorption and higher thermal stability in comparison to more popular methylammonium lead halide MAPbX3. Herein, a simple and highly reproducible room temperature synthesis of device grade high quality formamidinium lead bromide CH(NH2)2PbBr3 (FAPbBr3) colloidal nanocrystals (NC) having high photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of 55-65% is reported. In addition, we demonstrate high brightness perovskite light emitting device (Pe-LED) with these FAPbBr3 perovskite NC thin film using 2,2',2?-(1,3,5-Benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) commonly known as TPBi and 4,6-Bis(3,5-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)-2-methylpyrimidine (B3PYMPM) as electron transport layers (ETL). The Pe-LED device with B3PYMPM as ETL has bright electroluminescence of up to 2714?cd/m2, while the Pe-LED device with TPBi as ETL has higher peak luminous efficiency of 6.4?cd/A and peak luminous power efficiency of 5.7?lm/W. To our knowledge this is the first report on high brightness light emitting device based on CH(NH2)2PbBr3 widely known as FAPbBr3 nanocrystals in literature.

Size-tunable and stable cesium lead-bromide perovskite nanocubes with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield.

Project description:Stable cesium lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) showing a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), narrow emission profile, and tunable fluorescence peak in the green region can be considered the ideal class of nanomaterials for optoelectronic applications. However, a general route for ensuring the desired features of the perovskite NCs is still missing. In this paper, we propose a synthetic protocol for obtaining near-unity PLQY perovskite nanocubes, ensuring their size control and, consequently, a narrow and intense emission through the modification of the reaction temperature and the suitable combination ratio of the perovskite constituting elements. The peculiarity of this protocol is represented by the dissolution of the lead precursor (PbBr2) as a consequence of the exclusive complexation with the bromide anions released by the in situ SN2 reaction between oleylamine (the only surfactant introduced in the reaction mixture) and 1-bromohexane. The obtained CsPbBr3 nanocubes exhibit variable size (ranging from 6.7 ± 0.7 nm to 15.2 ± 1.2 nm), PL maxima between 505 and 517 nm, and near-unity PLQY with a narrow emission profile (fwhm of 17-19 nm). Additionally, the NCs synthesized with this approach preserve their high PLQYs even after 90 days of storage under ambient conditions, thus displaying a remarkable optical stability. Through the rationalization of the obtained results, the proposed synthetic protocol provides a new ground for the direct preparation of differently structured perovskite NCs without resorting to any additional post-synthetic treatment for improving their emission efficiency and stability.

Dismantling the "Red Wall" of Colloidal Perovskites: Highly Luminescent Formamidinium and Formamidinium-Cesium Lead Iodide Nanocrystals.

Project description:Colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) of APbX3-type lead halide perovskites [A = Cs+, CH3NH3+ (methylammonium or MA+) or CH(NH2)2+ (formamidinium or FA+); X = Cl-, Br-, I-] have recently emerged as highly versatile photonic sources for applications ranging from simple photoluminescence down-conversion (e.g., for display backlighting) to light-emitting diodes. From the perspective of spectral coverage, a formidable challenge facing the use of these materials is how to obtain stable emissions in the red and infrared spectral regions covered by the iodide-based compositions. So far, red-emissive CsPbI3 NCs have been shown to suffer from a delayed phase transformation into a nonluminescent, wide-band-gap 1D polymorph, and MAPbI3 exhibits very limited chemical durability. In this work, we report a facile colloidal synthesis method for obtaining FAPbI3 and FA-doped CsPbI3 NCs that are uniform in size (10-15 nm) and nearly cubic in shape and exhibit drastically higher robustness than their MA- or Cs-only cousins with similar sizes and morphologies. Detailed structural analysis indicated that the FAPbI3 NCs had a cubic crystal structure, while the FA0.1Cs0.9PbI3 NCs had a 3D orthorhombic structure that was isostructural to the structure of CsPbBr3 NCs. Bright photoluminescence (PL) with high quantum yield (QY > 70%) spanning red (690 nm, FA0.1Cs0.9PbI3 NCs) and near-infrared (near-IR, ca. 780 nm, FAPbI3 NCs) regions was sustained for several months or more in both the colloidal state and in films. The peak PL wavelengths can be fine-tuned by using postsynthetic cation- and anion-exchange reactions. Amplified spontaneous emissions with low thresholds of 28 and 7.5 ?J cm-2 were obtained from the films deposited from FA0.1Cs0.9PbI3 and FAPbI3 NCs, respectively. Furthermore, light-emitting diodes with a high external quantum efficiency of 2.3% were obtained by using FAPbI3 NCs.

Lead-Free Cesium Titanium Bromide Double Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:Double perovskites are a promising family of lead-free materials that not only replace lead but also enable new optoelectronic applications beyond photovoltaics. Recently, a titanium (Ti)-based vacancy-ordered double perovskite, Cs2TiBr6, has been reported as an example of truly sustainable and earth-abundant perovskite with controversial results in terms of photoluminescence and environmental stability. Our work looks at this material from a new perspective, i.e., at the nanoscale. We demonstrate the first colloidal synthesis of Cs2TiX6 nanocrystals (X = Br, Cl) and observe tunable morphology and size of the nanocrystals according to the set reaction temperature. The Cs2TiBr6 nanocrystals synthesized at 185 °C show a bandgap of 1.9 eV and are relatively stable up to 8 weeks in suspensions. However, they do not display notable photoluminescence. The centrosymmetric crystal structure of Cs2TiBr6 suggests that this material could enable third-harmonic generation (THG) responses. Indeed, we provide a clear evidence of THG signals detected by the THG microscopy technique. As only a few THG-active halide perovskite materials are known to date and they are all lead-based, our findings promote future research on Cs2TiBr6 as well as on other lead-free double perovskites, with stronger focus on currently unexplored nonlinear optical applications.

Formamidinium Lead Bromide (FAPbBr<sub>3</sub>) Perovskite Microcrystals for Sensitive and Fast Photodetectors.

Project description:Because of the good thermal stability and superior carrier transport characteristics of formamidinium lead trihalide perovskite HC(NH2)2PbX3 (FAPbX3), it has been considered to be a better optoelectronic material than conventional CH3NH3PbX3 (MAPbX3). Herein, we fabricated a FAPbBr3 microcrystal-based photodetector that exhibited a good responsivity of 4000 A W-1 and external quantum efficiency up to 106% under one-photon excitation, corresponding to the detectivity greater than 1014 Jones. The responsivity is two orders of magnitude higher than that of previously reported formamidinium perovskite photodetectors. Furthermore, the FAPbBr3 photodetector's responsivity to two-photon absorption with an 800-nm excitation source can reach 0.07 A W-1, which is four orders of magnitude higher than that of its MAPbBr3 counterparts. The response time of this photodetector is less than 1 ms. This study provides solid evidence that FAPbBr3 can be an excellent candidate for highly sensitive and fast photodetectors.

Resonantly Pumped Bright-Triplet Exciton Lasing in Cesium Lead Bromide Perovskites.

Project description:The surprising recent observation of highly emissive triplet-states in lead halide perovskites accounts for their orders-of-magnitude brighter optical signals and high quantum efficiencies compared to other semiconductors. This makes them attractive for future optoelectronic applications, especially in bright low-threshold nanolasers. While nonresonantly pumped lasing from all-inorganic lead-halide perovskites is now well-established as an attractive pathway to scalable low-power laser sources for nano-optoelectronics, here we showcase a resonant optical pumping scheme on a fast triplet-state in CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The scheme allows us to realize a polarized triplet-laser source that dramatically enhances the coherent signal by 1 order of magnitude while suppressing noncoherent contributions. The result is a source with highly attractive technological characteristics, including a bright and polarized signal and a high stimulated-to-spontaneous emission signal contrast that can be filtered to enhance spectral purity. The emission is generated by pumping selectively on a weakly confined excitonic state with a Bohr radius ∼10 nm in the nanocrystals. The exciton fine-structure is revealed by the energy-splitting resulting from confinement in nanocrystals with tetragonal symmetry. We use a linear polarizer to resolve 2-fold nondegenerate sublevels in the triplet exciton and use photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy to determine the energy of the state before pumping it resonantly.

Emergence of multiple fluorophores in individual cesium lead bromide nanocrystals.

Project description:Cesium-based perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) possess alluring optical and electronic properties via compositional and structural versatility, tunable bandgap, high photoluminescence quantum yield and facile chemical synthesis. Despite the recent progress, origins of the photoluminescence emission in various types of PNCs remains unclear. Here, we study the photon emission from individual three-dimensional and zero-dimensional cesium lead bromide PNCs. Using photon antibunching and lifetime measurements, we demonstrate that emission statistics of both type of PNCs are akin to individual molecular fluorophores, rather than traditional semiconductor quantum dots. Aided by density functional modelling, we provide compelling evidence that green emission in zero-dimensional PNCs stems from exciton recombination at bromide vacancy centres within lead-halide octahedra, unrelated to external confinement. These findings provide key information about the nature of defect formation and the origin of emission in cesium lead halide perovskite materials, which foster their utilization in the emerging optoelectronic applications.

Stable and bright formamidinium-based perovskite light-emitting diodes with high energy conversion efficiency.

Project description:Solution-processable perovskites show highly emissive and good charge transport, making them attractive for low-cost light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with high energy conversion efficiencies. Despite recent advances in device efficiency, the stability of perovskite LEDs is still a major obstacle. Here, we demonstrate stable and bright perovskite LEDs with high energy conversion efficiencies by optimizing formamidinium lead iodide films. Our LEDs show an energy conversion efficiency of 10.7%, and an external quantum efficiency of 14.2% without outcoupling enhancement through controlling the concentration of the precursor solutions. The device shows low efficiency droop, i.e. 8.3% energy conversion efficiency and 14.0% external quantum efficiency at a current density of 300 mA cm-2, making the device more efficient than state-of-the-art organic and quantum-dot LEDs at high current densities. Furthermore, the half-lifetime of device with benzylamine treatment is 23.7 hr under a current density of 100 mA cm-2, comparable to the lifetime of near-infrared organic LEDs.
