Near-Infrared Emissive Discrete Platinum(II) Metallacycles: Synthesis and Application in Ammonia Detection.

ABSTRACT: Two novel discrete organoplatinum(II) metallacycles are prepared by means of coordination-driven self-assembly of a 90° organoplatinum(II) acceptor, cis-(PEt3)2Pt(OTf)2, with two donors, a pyridyl donor, 9,10-di(4-pyridylvinyl)anthracene, and one of two dicarboxylate ligands. Both metallacycles display aggregation-induced emission as well as solvatochromism. More interestingly, both metallacycles exhibit near-infrared fluorescent emission in the solid state and can be used to detect ammonia gas.

Acid-Activated Motion Switching of DB24C8 between Two Discrete Platinum(II) Metallacycles.

Project description:The precise operation of molecular motion for constructing complicated mechanically interlocked molecules has received considerable attention and is still an energetic field of supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we reported the construction of two tris[2]pseudorotaxanes metallacycles with acid-base controllable molecular motion through self-sorting strategy and host-guest interaction. Firstly, two hexagonal Pt(II) metallacycles M1 and M2 decorated with different host-guest recognition sites have been constructed via coordination-driven self-assembly strategy. The binding of metallacycles M1 and M2 with dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) to form tris[2]pseudorotaxanes complexes TPRM1 and TPRM2 have been investigated. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the strong binding affinity between the protonated metallacycle M2 and DB24C8, the addition of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as a stimulus successfully induces an acid-activated motion switching of DB24C8 between the discrete metallacycles M1 and M2. This research not only affords a highly efficient way to construct stimuli-responsive smart supramolecular systems but also offers prospects for precisely control multicomponent cooperative motion.

A Near-Infrared-II Emissive Chromium(III) Complex.

Project description:The combination of π-donating amido with π-accepting pyridine coordination units in a tridentate chelate ligand causes a strong nephelauxetic effect in a homoleptic CrIII complex, which shifts its luminescence to the NIR-II spectral range. Previously explored CrIII polypyridine complexes typically emit between 727 and 778 nm (in the red to NIR-I spectral region), and ligand design strategies have so far concentrated on optimizing the ligand field strength. The present work takes a fundamentally different approach and focusses on increasing metal-ligand bond covalence to shift the ruby-like 2 E emission of CrIII to 1067 nm at 77 K.

Stimuli-Responsive Near-Infrared Emissive Os(II)-Terpyridine Complexes with a Sense of Logic.

Project description:Two bis-tridentate Os(II) compounds based on a heteroditopic terpyridine-bipyridine-type ligand were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were thoroughly studied. The compounds exhibit strong spin-allowed 1MLCT bands in the visible domain (489-521 nm) as well as weak 1GS to 3MLCT bands within the 668-815 nm domain. The compounds display strong luminescence from the 3MLCT state in the near-infrared domain (728-780 nm) at room temperature having lifetimes in the range of 20.0-171.0 ns. After coordination of [Os(tpy-PhCH3/H2pbbzim)2]2+ unit to the terpyridine site of tpy-Hbzim-dipy, the complexes offer vacant pyridine-imidazole motifs for interacting with cationic and anionic guests. Consequently, photophysical properties of the compounds were tuned to a great extent upon interaction with selected cations, anions, pH, as well as protons. Anion-induced alteration of the ground- and excited-state properties of the compound lead to recognition of specific anions in solution. Significant change in the optical spectral behaviors as well as switching of emission spectral properties of the compounds was done in the NIR region upon treating with anions, cations, protons, and solvents (dichloromethane, acetonitrile, methanol, dimethylsulfoxide, and water). Moreover, the optical outputs in response to external stimuli were used to demonstrate binary functions of two-input IMPLICATION, NOR, and XNOR logic gates.

Single Near-Infrared Emissive Polymer Nanoparticles as Versatile Phototheranostics.

Project description:Attaining consistently high performance of diagnostic and therapeutic functions in one single nanoplatform is of great significance for nanomedicine. This study demonstrates the use of donor-acceptor (D-A) structured polymer (TBT) to develop a smart "all-five-in-one" theranostic that conveniently integrates fluorescence/photoacoustic/thermal imaging and photodynamic/photothermal therapy into single nanoparticle. The prepared nanoparticles (TBTPNPs) exhibit near-infrared emission, high water solubility, excellent light resistance, good pH stability, and negligible toxicity. Additionally, the TBTPNPs exhibit an excellent singlet oxygen (1O2) quantum yield (40%) and high photothermal conversion efficiency (37.1%) under single-laser irradiation (635 nm). Apart from their two phototherapeutic modalities, fluorescence, photoacoustic signals, and thermal imaging in vivo can be simultaneously achieved because of their enhanced permeability and retention effects. This work demonstrates that the prepared TBTPNPs are "all-five-in-one" phototheranostic agents that can exhibit properties to satisfy the "one-fits-all" requirement for future phototheranostic applications. Thus, the prepared TBTPNPs can provide fundamental insights into the development of PNP-based nanoagents for cancer therapy.

Selective Detection of Human Serum Albumin by Near Infrared Emissive Fluorophores: Insights into Structure-property Relationship.

Project description:Two donor-acceptor fluorophores were prepared and tested for quantitative determination of HSA in aqueous samples. Fluorophores were non-emissive in polar solvents due to energy loss via non-radiative decays. Complexation of the fluorophores with HSA resulted multi-fold enhancement of emission in the red-near infrared (NIR) region. The emission intensity was linearly correlated to the amount of protein in the solution, which enabled us to develop calibration graphs for quantitative estimation of HSA in synthetic urine samples. Between the two fluorophores, the methoxy substituted fluorophore 1 selectively recognized HSA. It exhibited remarkable fluorescence enhancement with HSA over bovine serum albumin (BSA) and other globular proteins. The selective sensing aptitude of 1 was attributed to its restricted motions in the protein's microenvironment due to multiple non-covalent interactions, preventing energy loss by radiationless decay. The different recognition properties of the fluorophores were estimated by the steady-state fluorescence and molecular docking studies. These findings indicate that this class of fluorophores can be useful for quantitative estimation of HSA in biological urine and blood samples in clinical practice.

Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of nanoscale near-infrared emissive polymersomes.

Project description:Formed through cooperative self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymers and electronically conjugated porphyrinic near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores (NIRFs), NIR-emissive polymersomes (50 nm to 50 microm diameter polymer vesicles) define a family of organic-based, soft-matter structures that are ideally suited for deep-tissue optical imaging and sensitive diagnostic applications. Here, we describe magic angle and polarized pump-probe spectroscopic experiments that: (i) probe polymersome structure and NIRF organization and (ii) connect emitter structural properties and NIRF loading with vesicle emissive output at the nanoscale. Within polymersome membrane environments, long polymer chains constrain ethyne-bridged oligo(porphinato)zinc(II) based supermolecular fluorophore (PZn n ) conformeric populations and disperse these PZn n species within the hydrophobic bilayer. Ultrafast excited-state transient absorption and anisotropy dynamical studies of NIR-emissive polymersomes, in which the PZn n fluorophore loading per nanoscale vesicle is varied between 0.1-10 mol %, enable the exploration of concentration-dependent mechanisms for nonradiative excited-state decay. These experiments correlate fluorophore structure with its gross spatial arrangement within specific nanodomains of these nanoparticles and reveal how compartmentalization of fluorophores within reduced effective dispersion volumes impacts bulk photophysical properties. As these factors play key roles in determining the energy transfer dynamics between dispersed fluorophores, this work underscores that strategies that modulate fluorophore and polymer structure to optimize dispersion volume in bilayered nanoscale vesicular environments will further enhance the emissive properties of these sensitive nanoscale probes.

Platinum(II) Ring-Fused Chlorins as Near-Infrared Emitting Oxygen Sensors and Photodynamic Agents.

Project description:Novel near-infrared luminescent compounds based on platinum(II) 4,5,6,7-tetrahydropyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine-fused chlorins are described. These compounds have high photostability and display light emission, in particular simultaneous fluorescence and phosphorescence emission in solution at room temperature, in the biologically relevant 700-850 nm red and near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, making them excellent materials for biological imaging. The simultaneous presence of fluorescence and phosphorescence emission at room temperature, with the phosphorescence strongly quenched by oxygen whereas fluorescence remains unaffected, allows these compounds to be used as ratiometric oxygen sensors in chemical and biological media. Both steady-state (fluorescence vs phosphorescence intensities) and dynamic (dependence of phosphorescence lifetimes upon oxygen concentration) luminescence approaches can be used. Photocytotoxicity studies against human melanocytic melanoma cells (A375) indicate that these compounds display potential as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy.

Designed Conformation and Fluorescence Properties of Self-Assembled Phenazine-Cored Platinum(II) Metallacycles.

Project description:A series of platinum(II) metallacycles were prepared via the coordination-driven self-assembly of a phenazine-cored dipyridyl donor with a 90° Pt(II) acceptor and various dicarboxylate donors in a 1:1:2 ratio. While the metallacycles display similar absorption profiles, they exhibit a trend of blue-shifted fluorescence emission with the decrease in the bite angles between the carboxylate building blocks. Comprehensive spectroscopic and dynamic studies as well as a computational approach were conducted, revealing that the difference in the degree of constraint imposed on the excited-state planarization of the phenazine core within these metallacycles results in their distinct photophysical behaviors. As such, a small initial difference in the dicarboxylate building blocks is amplified into distinct photophysical properties of the metallacycles, which is reminiscent of the efficient functional tuning observed in natural systems. In addition to the pre-assembly approach, the photophysical properties of a metallacycle can also be modulated using a post-assembly modification to the dicarboxylate building block, suggesting another strategy for functional tuning. This research illustrated the potential of coordination-driven self-assembly for the preparation of materials with precisely tailored functionalities at the molecular level.

Efficient Red/Near-Infrared-Emissive Carbon Nanodots with Multiphoton Excited Upconversion Fluorescence.

Project description:Red/near-infrared (NIR) emissive carbon nanodots (CNDs) with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of 57% are prepared via an in situ solvent-free carbonization strategy for the first time. 1-Photon and 2-photon cellular imaging is demonstrated by using the CNDs as red/NIR fluorescence agent due to the high PL QY and low biotoxicity. Further study shows that the red/NIR CNDs exhibit multiphoton excited (MPE) upconversion fluorescence under excitation of 800-2000 nm, which involves three NIR windows (NIR-I, 650-950 nm; NIR-II, 1100-1350; NIR-III, 1600-1870 nm). 2-Photon, 3-photon, and 4-photon excited fluorescence of the CNDs under excitation of different wavelengths is achieved. This study develops an in situ solvent-free carbonization method for efficient red/NIR emissive CNDs with MPE upconversion fluorescence, which may push forward the application of the CNDs in bioimaging.

Two-photon excited deep-red and near-infrared emissive organic co-crystals.

Project description:Two-photon excited near-infrared fluorescence materials have garnered considerable attention because of their superior optical penetration, higher spatial resolution, and lower optical scattering compared with other optical materials. Herein, a convenient and efficient supramolecular approach is used to synthesize a two-photon excited near-infrared emissive co-crystalline material. A naphthalenediimide-based triangular macrocycle and coronene form selectively two co-crystals. The triangle-shaped co-crystal emits deep-red fluorescence, while the quadrangle-shaped co-crystal displays deep-red and near-infrared emission centered on 668 nm, which represents a 162 nm red-shift compared with its precursors. Benefiting from intermolecular charge transfer interactions, the two co-crystals possess higher calculated two-photon absorption cross-sections than those of their individual constituents. Their two-photon absorption bands reach into the NIR-II region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The quadrangle-shaped co-crystal constitutes a unique material that exhibits two-photon absorption and near-infrared emission simultaneously. This co-crystallization strategy holds considerable promise for the future design and synthesis of more advanced optical materials.
