Insights into the formation mechanism of two-dimensional lead halide nanostructures.

ABSTRACT: We present a colloidal synthesis strategy for lead halide nanosheets with a thickness of far below 100 nm. Due to the layered structure and the synthesis parameters the crystals of PbI2 are initially composed of many polytypes. We propose a mechanism which gives insight into the chemical process of the PbI2 formation. Further, we found that the crystal structure changes with increasing reaction temperature or by performing the synthesis for longer time periods changing for the final 2H structure. In addition, we demonstrate a route to prepare nanosheets of lead bromide as well as lead chloride in a similar way. Lead halides can be used as a detector material for high-energy photons including gamma and X-rays.

Bright magnetic dipole radiation from two-dimensional lead-halide perovskites.

Project description:Light-matter interactions in semiconductors are uniformly treated within the electric dipole approximation; multipolar interactions are considered "forbidden." We experimentally demonstrate that this approximation inadequately describes light emission in two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs), solution processable semiconductors with promising optoelectronic properties. By exploiting the highly oriented crystal structure, we use energy-momentum spectroscopies to demonstrate that an exciton-like sideband in 2D HOIPs exhibits a multipolar radiation pattern with highly directed emission. Electromagnetic and quantum-mechanical analyses indicate that this emission originates from an out-of-plane magnetic dipole transition arising from the 2D character of electronic states. Symmetry arguments and temperature-dependent measurements suggest a dynamic symmetry-breaking mechanism that is active over a broad temperature range. These results challenge the paradigm of electric dipole-dominated light-matter interactions in optoelectronic materials, provide new perspectives on the origins of unexpected sideband emission in HOIPs, and tease the possibility of metamaterial-like scattering phenomena at the quantum-mechanical level.

Scalable photonic sources using two-dimensional lead halide perovskite superlattices.

Project description:Miniaturized photonic sources based on semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) materials offer new technological opportunities beyond the modern III-V platforms. For example, the quantum-confined 2D electronic structure aligns the exciton transition dipole moment parallel to the surface plane, thereby outcoupling more light to air which gives rise to high-efficiency quantum optics and electroluminescent devices. It requires scalable materials and processes to create the decoupled multi-quantum-well superlattices, in which individual 2D material layers are isolated by atomically thin quantum barriers. Here, we report decoupled multi-quantum-well superlattices comprised of the colloidal quantum wells of lead halide perovskites, with unprecedentedly ultrathin quantum barriers that screen interlayer interactions within the range of 6.5 Å. Crystallographic and 2D k-space spectroscopic analysis reveals that the transition dipole moment orientation of bright excitons in the superlattices is predominantly in-plane and independent of stacking layer and quantum barrier thickness, confirming interlayer decoupling.

Momentarily trapped exciton polaron in two-dimensional lead halide perovskites.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites with distinct excitonic feature have shown exciting potential for optoelectronic applications. Compared to their three-dimensional counterparts with large polaron character, how the interplay between long- and short- range exciton-phonon interaction due to polar and soft lattice define the excitons in 2D perovskites is yet to be revealed. Here, we seek to understand the nature of excitons in 2D CsPbBr3 perovskites by static and time-resolved spectroscopy which is further rationalized with Urbach-Martienssen rule. We show quantitatively an intermediate exciton-phonon coupling in 2D CsPbBr3 where exciton polarons are momentarily self-trapped by lattice vibrations. The 0.25 ps ultrafast interconversion between free and self-trapped exciton polaron with a barrier of ~ 34 meV gives rise to intrinsic asymmetric photoluminescence with a low energy tail at room temperature. This study reveals a complex and dynamic picture of exciton polarons in 2D perovskites and emphasizes the importance to regulate exciton-phonon coupling.

Synthesis of two-dimensional phenylethylamine tin-lead halide perovskites with bandgap bending behavior.

Project description:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) metal halide perovskite materials with wide application in perovskite-based solar cells have attracted significant attention. Among them, 2D mixed lead-tin perovskites have not been systematically explored. Herein, we synthesize a 2D phenethylammonium (PEA) tin-lead bromide perovskite, PEA2Sn x Pb1-x Br4, via a simple solution-phase approach without toxic reagents and high temperatures. By tuning the ratio of Sn and Pb, the UV-vis absorption spectra showed unique bandgap bending behaviors. DFT calculations indicate the key effects of spin-orbital coupling (SOC) without the interference of lattice distortion. Moreover, we provided the standard equation with a correction term to introduce the influence of SOC. These results not only provide a step forward towards the bandgap engineering of perovskites, but also help to expand the application of 2D perovskite materials.

Regulation of the luminescence mechanism of two-dimensional tin halide perovskites.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) Sn-based perovskites are a kind of non-toxic environment-friendly luminescent material. However, the research on the luminescence mechanism of this type of perovskite is still very controversial, which greatly limits the further improvement and application of the luminescence performance. At present, the focus of controversy is defects and phonon scattering rates. In this work, we combine the organic cation control engineering with temperature-dependent transient absorption spectroscopy to systematically study the interband exciton relaxation pathways in layered A2SnI4 (A = PEA+, BA+, HA+, and OA+) structures. It is revealed that exciton-phonon scattering and exciton-defect scattering have different effects on exciton relaxation. Our study further confirms that the deformation potential scattering by charged defects, not by the non-polar optical phonons, dominates the excitons interband relaxation, which is largely different from the Pb-based perovskites. These results enhance the understanding of the origin of the non-radiative pathway in Sn-based perovskite materials.

Dynamic polaronic screening for anomalous exciton spin relaxation in two-dimensional lead halide perovskites.

Project description:Two-dimensional lead halide perovskites with confined excitons have shown exciting potentials in optoelectronic applications. It is intriguing but unclear how the soft and polar lattice redefines excitons in layered perovskites. Here, we reveal the intrinsic exciton properties by investigating exciton spin dynamics, which provides a sensitive probe to exciton coulomb interactions. Compared to transition metal dichalcogenides with comparable exciton binding energy, we observe orders of magnitude smaller exciton-exciton interaction and, counterintuitively, longer exciton spin lifetime at higher temperature. The anomalous spin dynamics implies that excitons exist as exciton polarons with substantially weakened inter- and intra-excitonic interactions by dynamic polaronic screening. The combination of strong light matter interaction from reduced dielectric screening and weakened inter-/intra-exciton interaction from dynamic polaronic screening explains their exceptional performance and provides new rules for quantum-confined optoelectronic and spintronic systems.

Decoding ultrafast polarization responses in lead halide perovskites by the two-dimensional optical Kerr effect.

Project description:The ultrafast polarization response to incident light and ensuing exciton/carrier generation are essential to outstanding optoelectronic properties of lead halide perovskites (LHPs). A large number of mechanistic studies in the LHP field to date have focused on contributions to polarizability from organic cations and the highly polarizable inorganic lattice. For a comprehensive understanding of the ultrafast polarization response, we must additionally account for the nearly instantaneous hyperpolarizability response to the propagating light field itself. While light propagation is pivotal to optoelectronics and photonics, little is known about this in LHPs in the vicinity of the bandgap where stimulated emission, polariton condensation, superfluorescence, and photon recycling may take place. Here we develop two-dimensional optical Kerr effect (2D-OKE) spectroscopy to energetically dissect broadband light propagation and dispersive nonlinear polarization responses in LHPs. In contrast to earlier interpretations, the below-bandgap OKE responses in both hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites are found to originate from strong hyperpolarizability and highly anisotropic dispersions. In both materials, the nonlinear mixing of anisotropically propagating light fields results in convoluted oscillatory polarization dynamics. Based on a four-wave mixing model, we quantitatively derive dispersion anisotropies, reproduce 2D-OKE frequency correlations, and establish polarization-dressed light propagation in single-crystal LHPs. Moreover, our findings highlight the importance of distinguishing the often-neglected anisotropic light propagation from underlying coherent quasiparticle responses in various forms of ultrafast spectroscopy.

Exciton diffusion in two-dimensional metal-halide perovskites.

Project description:Two-dimensional layered perovskites are attracting increasing attention as more robust analogues to the conventional three-dimensional metal-halide perovskites for both light harvesting and light emitting applications. However, the impact of the reduced dimensionality on the optoelectronic properties remains unclear, particularly regarding the spatial dynamics of the excitonic excited state within the two-dimensional plane. Here, we present direct measurements of exciton transport in single-crystalline layered perovskites. Using transient photoluminescence microscopy, we show that excitons undergo an initial fast diffusion through the crystalline plane, followed by a slower subdiffusive regime as excitons get trapped. Interestingly, the early intrinsic diffusivity depends sensitively on the choice of organic spacer. A clear correlation between lattice stiffness and diffusivity is found, suggesting exciton-phonon interactions to be dominant in the spatial dynamics of the excitons in perovskites, consistent with the formation of exciton-polarons. Our findings provide a clear design strategy to optimize exciton transport in these systems.

Strain propagation in layered two-dimensional halide perovskites.

Project description:Impulsive light excitation presents a powerful tool for investigating the interdependent structural and electronic responses in layered two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites. However, detailed understanding of the nonlinear lattice dynamics in these soft hybrid materials remains limited. Here, we explicate the intrinsic strain propagation mechanisms in 2D perovskite single crystals using transient reflection spectroscopy. Ultrafast photoexcitation leads to the generation of strain pulses via thermoelastic (TE) stress and deformation potential (DP) interaction whence their detection proceed via Brillouin scattering. Using a two-temperature model together with strain wave propagation, we discern the TE and DP contributions in strain generation. Hot carrier cooling plays a dominant role in effecting the weak modulation amplitude. Out-of-plane lattice stiffness is reduced by the weak van der Waals bond between organic layers, resulting in a slow strain propagation velocity. Our findings inject fresh insights into the basic strain properties of layered perovskites critical for manipulating their functional properties for new applications.

Free Carriers versus Self-Trapped Excitons at Different Facets of Ruddlesden-Popper Two-Dimensional Lead Halide Perovskite Single Crystals.

Project description:The physical origin of sub-band gap photoluminescence in Ruddlesden-Poppers two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites (LHPs) is still under debate. In this paper, we studied the photoluminescence features from two different facets of 2D LHP single crystals: the in-plane facet (IF) containing the 2D inorganic layers and the facet perpendicular to the 2D layers (PF). At the IF, the free carriers (FCs) dominate due to the weak electron-phonon coupling in a symmetric lattice. At the PF, the strain accumulation along the 2D layers enhances the electron-phonon coupling and facilitates self-trapped exciton (STE) formation. The time-resolved PL studies indicate that free carriers (FCs) at the IF can move freely and display the trapping by the intrinsic defects. The STEs at the PF are not likely trapped by the defects due to the reduced mobility. However, with increasing STE density, the STE transport is promoted, enabling the trapping of STE by the intrinsic defects.
