ABSTRACT: The whole-genome sequence of an enterovirus A71 strain (EV71/SHENZHEN001/2006) isolated in 2006 from a patient with a fatal case of enterovirus infection was determined. Phylogenetic analysis based on the complete VP1 gene classified this strain as subgenotype C4a.

Complete genome sequence of an enterovirus 80 strain isolated in China.

Project description:Enterovirus 80 (EV80) is a newly identified serotype of the species Human enterovirus B. An EV80 strain designated HZ01/SD/CHN/2004 was isolated from an acute flaccid paralysis case in Shandong, China, in 2004. Complete genome comparison revealed 79.5% similarity with the prototype strain and an insertion of 36 nucleotides in the 3' end of the VP1 coding region. Intertypic recombination with other serotypes was observed. This is the first report of the complete genome of EV80 in China.

Seroepidemiology of enterovirus A71 infection in prospective cohort studies of children in southern China, 2013-2018.

Project description:Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71)-related hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) imposes a substantial clinical burden in the Asia Pacific region. To inform policy on the introduction of the EV-A71 vaccine into the National Immunization Programme, we investigated the seroepidemiological characteristics of EV-A71 in two prospective cohorts of children in southern China conducted between 2013 and 2018. Our results show that maternal antibody titres declined rapidly in neonates, with over half becoming susceptible to EV-A71 at 1 month of age. Between 6 months and 2 years of age, over 80% of study participants were susceptible, while one third remained susceptible at 5 years old. The highest incidence of EV-A71 infections was observed in children aged 5-6 months. Our findings support EV-A71 vaccination before 6 months for birth cohorts in southern China, potentially with a one-time catch-up vaccination for children 6 months-5 years old. More regionally representative longitudinal seroepidemiological studies are needed to further validate these findings.

Project description:The whole-genome sequences of seven fatal enterovirus 71 (EV71) strains, isolated in southern China, in 2014, were determined. The complete genome sequences of these strains displayed close relationships to native EV71 strains and showed 94.2% to 99.8% identity to each other. All of these strains were assigned to subgenotype C4a based on phylogenetic analysis of the VP1 gene.

Studies indicate that BVDV GX4 belongs to the BVDV-1b subtype. This report will help in understanding the epidemiology and molecular characteristics of BVDV in southern China cattle.

Isolation of an imported subgenotype B5 strain of human enterovirus A71 in Chongqing City, China, 2014.

Project description:BackgroundEnterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is the main pathogen responsible for large outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in mainland China, and the dominant EV-A71 strains belong to subgenotype C4. To date, only one imported subgenotype B5 of EV-A71 has been reported in Xiamen City Fujian Province, 2009.ResultsHere, we report on another imported subgenotype B5 of EV-A71 isolated from a HFMD patient in Chongqing City in 2014 (strain CQ2014-86/CQ/CHN/2014, hereafter refer as CQ2014-86). The VP1 coding sequence and the whole genome sequence revealed that strain CQ2014-86 shares the high nucleotide identity with Vietnamese strains isolated in 2011-2013, suggesting that strain CQ2014-86 may have been imported from Vietnam. In the 5'UTR, P2 and P3 regions, recombination events were found between strain CQ2014-86 and other EV-A, such as coxsackievirus A4 (CV-A4), CV-A5, CV-A14 and CV-A16.ConclusionsThis is the second report on importation of subgenotype B5 of EV-A71 in China, implying that we need to pay more attention to the importation of different subgenotypes of EV-A71.
