Elevated fluoride concentration levels in rural villages of Siddipet, Telangana State, South India.

ABSTRACT: Fluoride beyond desirable amounts(0.6-1.5 mg/L) in groundwater is a major problem and fluorosis is a very dangerous and deadly disease affecting millions of people across the World (Bell and Ludwig, 1970; Adimalla and Venkatayogi, 2017; Narsimha and Sudarshan, 2013, 2017a, 2017b) [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. The investigated area is located in north-eastern part of Medak district, Telangana state and fluoride concentration in groundwater samples was measured by ion selective electrode method and its ranges from 0.4 to 2.2 mg/L with a mean value of 1.1 mg/L. Therefore, fluoride concentration data advised to the village people are consume drinking water which has less than 1.5 mg/L fluoride to avoid further fluorosis risks.

Project description:Fluoride is an undesirable chemical in drinking water that can have dreadful concerns on health. The objective of this study is to establish the concentration profile of fluoride in groundwater used as drinking water in 31 rural habitats in Mahabubnagar district, Telangana State, India. Drinking water samples from bore wells/hand pumps were collected from different locations in the study area and analyzed for fluoride levels using a spectrophotometer. The fluoride levels range from 0.6 to 1.8 mg/L, with an average value of 1.31 mg/L. Overall, 32% of groundwater samples found to be exceeded the prescribed limits of fluoride in the study area, as prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Besides, the optimal amounts of fluoride in drinking water have to meet in the range of 0.5 mg/L and 1.5 mg/L, as this range is the permissible limit for drinking. Fluoride is an essential micronutrient for normal mineralization of teeth and bones as well as for the formation of dental enamel in the human body. This study suggested that prolonged intake of drinking water with fluoride concentrations higher than acceptable limits can trigger dental and skeletal fluorosis in the general community of the study region. The fluoride data compared with the permissible levels recommended for drinking purposes by various regulatory agencies across the world.

Hydrogeochemical data on groundwater quality with special emphasis on fluoride enrichment in Munneru river basin (MRB), Telangana State, South India.

Project description:Fluorosis is one of the most prevailing groundwater related disease in developing countries like India and China. In India, 20 out of 29 states have some extent of groundwater fluoride contamination. In especially, Telangana State all (10 out of 10) districts are fluoride affected (Adimalla and Venkatayogi, 2017) [2]. However, this article describes about fluoride contamination and correlation between fluoride and other hydrochemical parameters, in the Munneru river basin (MRB) groundwater, Telangana State, South India. The fluoride concentration in groundwater of Munneru river basin ranged from 0.3 to 8.0 mg/L, with a mean of 1.607 mg/L. About 35% of the groundwater samples have fluoride concentration above > 1.5 mg/L which are unsuitable for drinking purposes. However, 53% of groundwater locations are within the acceptable limits (0.5-1.5 mg/L) and these are very suitable for drinking purposes and remaining 22% of collected groundwater samples were having less than the required limit of 0.5 mg/L.

Project description:The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of fluoride in drinking water, the distribution system, in 22 villages in Shout (A city in West Azerbaijan province). Sampling of springs and underground water was carried out in two warm and cold seasons. Fluoride concentration were determined through spectrophotometer with a model, DR/5000.The fluoride concentration were compared with Iranian standards and WHO guidelines for drinking water.

Awareness of COVID 19 pandemic among dental practioners of Telangana state, India: A cross sectional survey.

Project description:BackgroundCoronavirus diseases (COVID-19) is a public health emergency of international concern. The dental professionals are considered to be at high risk, as most of the treatments may lead to the spread of infection due to direct proximity with saliva, blood and aerosols generation.AimThe aim of the current study was to evaluate the awareness, regarding COVID19 pandemic among dental practioners in state of Telangana.Materials and methodologyA self-administered, structured, pilot-tested close-ended 20 point questionnaire,was distributed among the dental practioners in Telangana state. A total of 385 participants completed the questionnaire. Data obtained was analyzed using SPSS 22.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) for data analysis.ResultsAmong 385 participants a total of 115 (29.9%) exhibited high level of knowledge while 167 (43.4%) demonstrated moderate knowledge and 103 (26.8%) demonstrated low level of knowledge. Mean knowledge score was 12.46 ± 2.47, minimum and maximum scores were 5 and 15 respectively among the dental practioners (DPs).ConclusionAll the respondents seem to have adequate knowledge regarding COVID19 and adoption of control measures to prevent the spread of COVID19. However, some deficiencies were noted. The, dentists, must be well informed of the recommended practices.Initiatives for attending webinars, continuing dental education programs on COVID19, have to be undertaken to keep them selves updated and be prepared with extra precautionary measures to be taken.

How gender norms affect anemia in select villages in rural Odisha, India: A qualitative study.

Project description:BackgroundIn India, 50% of women of reproductive age, compared with 23% of men, have iron deficiency anemia. Extant research focuses on biological, not social, determinants of this disparity.ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to examine how gender norms may affect anemia prevalence among women in rural India.MethodsWe conducted 16 focus group discussions (N = 124) with women of reproductive age, husbands, and mothers-in-law and 25 key informant interviews in four villages in Odisha, India.ResultsWe identified the following themes that help explain how inequitable gender norms exacerbate anemia among women from different castes and tribes: Due to a double burden of work outside the home and completing the majority of unpaid work in the home, women lack time to visit health centers to get tested for anemia and to obtain iron supplements. Women are expected to prioritize the health of their family over their own, thus affecting their access to health care. Women's autonomy to leave the house to seek health care is limited. Men are the primary breadwinners for the family, but often spend their money on alcohol, rather than on iron-rich food for the household. Intra-household food allocation favors men, in-laws, and children, thus women serve their family first, often being left with little food.ConclusionAnemia reduction interventions need to include examination of the whole social context to successfully increase iron supplement use and iron-rich food intake. Understanding how gender norms contribute to anemia could change the narrative from a biomedical to a social justice issue.

Geochemical behavior of fluoride-rich groundwater in Markapur, Andhra Pradesh, South India.

Project description:Excess fluoride in drinking water has been one of the leading problem faced by the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Significantly in India the people suffer from fluorosis comparing to other toxic elements like Arsenic etc., in drinking water. Approximately, in India the excessive fluoride in groundwater is noticed in 177 districts covering 21 states, affecting 66 million people, including 6 million children and Moreover, the latest estimation gives nearly 200 million people, from among 25 nations the world over, are affected by the deadly disease of fluorosis [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14]. The fluoride of the groundwater varies from 0.4 to 5.8 mg/L with a mean of 1.98 mg/L (Table 1 & 2), which indicates that the concentration of fluoride is not uniform in the study area. In general intake of small quantities of fluoride in the permissible limit of 0.5 to 1 mg/L is known to be beneficial for human health in production and maintenance of proper health. However, in India safe limit of fluoride in potable water is considered to be between 0.6 to 1.2 mg/L, less than 0.6 mg/L can cause dental caries, while higher than 1.2 mg/L leads to fluorosis [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16].

Tracking Progress Towards the Sustainable Development Goals in Four Rural Villages in Limpopo, South Africa.

Project description:BackgroundMeasuring national progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) enables the identification of gaps which need to be filled to end poverty, protect the planet and improve lives. Progress is typically calculated using indicators stemming from published methodologies. South Africa tracks progress towards the SDGs at a national scale, but aggregated data may mask progress, or lack thereof, at local levels.ObjectiveTo assess the progress towards achievement of the SDGs in four low-income, rural villages (Giyani) in South Africa and to relate the findings to national SDG indicators.MethodsUsing data from a cross-sectional environmental health study, the global indicator framework for the SDGs was applied to calculate indicators for Giyani. Local progress towards SDG achievement was compared with national progress, to contextualize and supplement national scale tracking.FindingsVillage scores were mostly in line with country scores for those indices which were computable, given the available data. Low data availability prevented a complete local progress assessment. Higher levels of poverty prevail in the study villages compared to South Africa as a whole (17.7% compared to 7.4%), high unemployment (49.0% compared to 27.3%) and lack of access to information via the Internet (only 4.2% compared to 61.8%) were indicators in the villages identified as falling far short of the South African averages.ConclusionsUnderstanding progress towards the SDGs at a local scale is important when trying to unpack national progress. It shines a light upon issues that are not picked up by national composite assessments yet require most urgent attention. Gaps in data required to measure progress towards targets represents a serious stumbling block, preventing the creation of a true reflection of local and national scale progress.

A comprehensive profile of genomic variations in the SARS-CoV-2 isolates from the state of Telangana, India.

Project description:The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing COVID-19 has rapidly turned into a pandemic, infecting millions and causing 1 157 509 (as of 27 October 2020) deaths across the globe. In addition to studying the mode of transmission and evasion of host immune system, analysing the viral mutational landscape constitutes an area under active research. The latter is expected to impart knowledge on the emergence of different clades, subclades, viral protein functions and protein-protein and protein-RNA interactions during replication/transcription cycle of virus and response to host immune checkpoints. In this study, we have attempted to bring forth the viral genomic variants defining the major clade(s) as identified from samples collected from the state of Telangana, India. We further report a comprehensive draft of all genomic variations (including unique mutations) present in SARS-CoV-2 strain in the state of Telangana. Our results reveal the presence of two mutually exclusive subgroups defined by specific variants within the dominant clade present in the population. This work attempts to bridge the critical gap regarding the genomic landscape and associate mutations in SARS-CoV-2 from a highly infected southern region of India, which was lacking to date.

Fluoride concentration level in rural area in Poldasht city and daily fluoride intake based on drinking water consumption with temperature.

Project description:Long-term exposure to high level of fluoride can caused several adverse effects on human health including dental and skeletal fluorosis. We investigated all the drinking water source located in rural areas of Poldasht city, west Azerbaijan Province, North West Iran between 2014 and 2015. Fluoride concentration of water samples was measured by SPADNS method. We found that in the villages of Poldasht the average of fluoride concentration in drinking water sources (well, and the river) was in the range mg/l 0.28-10.23. The average daily received per 2 l of drinking water is in the range mg/l 0.7-16.6 per day per person. Drinking water demands cause fluorosis in the villages around the area residents and based on the findings of this study writers are announced suggestions below in order to take care of the health of area residents.

Tuberculosis at Farmer-Cattle Interface in the Rural Villages of South Gondar Zone of Northwest Ethiopia.

Project description:BackgroundTuberculosis (TB) has been an important public health concern in Ethiopia, particularly at areas of human-animal intersection. However, limited epidemiological information is available in this respect in the country. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the transmission of TB at human-cattle interface, associated risk factors and public awareness about the disease at South Gondar Zone, northwest Ethiopia.MethodsA cross sectional study was conducted between March 2015 and April 2018 on 186 farmers and 476 cattle in South Gondar Zone, northwest Ethiopia. Bacteriological examination, region of difference (RD) 9-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR), single intradermal comparative tuberculin test (SICTT), and questionnaire were used for undertaking this study.ResultsCulture positivity in farmers was 59.7% (111/186) and all the culture positive isolates were M. tuberculosis. About 68% (74/111) of culture positive respondents did not know about the transmission of TB from cattle to human or vice versa. The animal and herd prevalence of bovine TB were 1.5% (7/476) and 7.4% (7/95), respectively. Although the result was not statistically significant, the odds of bovine TB in cattle owned by TB positive households was slightly higher than those owned by TB free households (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 1.39; 95% CI: 0.31-7.10; p = 0.76).ConclusionAlthough SIDCTT reactivity was slightly higher in cattle owned by TB positive households, all the human isolates were M. tuberculosis and no M. bovis was isolated from farmers, which could be due to the low prevalence of bovine TB in the area.
