Solid-State Structure of Tris-Cyclopentadienide Uranium(III) and Plutonium(III).

ABSTRACT: The organometallic tris-cyclopentadienide actinide(III) (AnCp₃ ) complexes were first reported about 50?years ago. However, up until now, only the NpCp₃ solid state structure has been studied. Here we report on the solid state structures of UCp₃ and PuCp₃ which are isostructural to the Np analogue. The structural models are supported by theoretical calculations and compared to their lanthanide analogues. The observed trends in changes of bond lengths might be indicator for an increased covalency in the bonding in the tris-cyclopentadienide actinide(III) complexes (AnCp₃ ) compared to their lanthanide homologues.

Contrasting behaviour under pressure reveals the reasons for pyramidalization in tris(amido)uranium(III) and tris(arylthiolate) uranium(III) molecules.

Project description:A range of reasons has been suggested for why many low-coordinate complexes across the periodic table exhibit a geometry that is bent, rather a higher symmetry that would best separate the ligands. The dominating reason or reasons are still debated. Here we show that two pyramidal UX3 molecules, in which X is a bulky anionic ligand, show opposite behaviour upon pressurisation in the solid state. UN″3 (UN3, N″ = N(SiMe3)2) increases in pyramidalization between ambient pressure and 4.08 GPa, while U(SAr)3 (US3, SAr = S-C6H2-tBu3-2,4,6) undergoes pressure-induced planarization. This capacity for planarization enables the use of X-ray structural and computational analyses to explore the four hypotheses normally put forward for this pyramidalization. The pyramidality of UN3, which increases with pressure, is favoured by increased dipole and reduction in molecular volume, the two factors outweighing the slight increase in metal-ligand agostic interactions that would be formed if it was planar. The ambient pressure pyramidal geometry of US3 is favoured by the induced dipole moment and agostic bond formation but these are weaker drivers than in UN3; the pressure-induced planarization of US3 is promoted by the lower molecular volume of US3 when it is planar compared to when it is pyramidal.

Solid-state mechanochemistry for the rapid and efficient synthesis of tris-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes.

Project description:Tris-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes have received widespread attention as attractive prospective materials for e.g., organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), photoredox catalysts, and bioimaging probes. However, their preparation usually requires prolonged reaction times, significant amounts of high-boiling solvents, multistep synthesis, and inert-gas-line techniques. Unfortunately, these requirements represent major drawbacks from both a production-cost and an environmental perspective. Herein, we show that a two-step mechanochemical protocol using ball milling enables the rapid and efficient synthesis of various tris-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes from relatively cheap iridium(iii) chloride hydrate without the use of significant amounts of organic solvent in air. Notably, a direct one-pot procedure is also demonstrated. The present solid-state approach can be expected to inspire the development of cost-effective and timely production methods for these valuable iridium-based complexes, as well as the discovery of new phosphorescent materials, sensors, and catalysts.

Multiconfigurational nature of 5f orbitals in uranium and plutonium intermetallics.

Project description:Uranium and plutonium's 5f electrons are tenuously poised between strongly bonding with ligand spd-states and residing close to the nucleus. The unusual properties of these elements and their compounds (e.g., the six different allotropes of elemental plutonium) are widely believed to depend on the related attributes of f-orbital occupancy and delocalization for which a quantitative measure is lacking. By employing resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and making comparisons to specific heat measurements, we demonstrate the presence of multiconfigurational f-orbital states in the actinide elements U and Pu and in a wide range of uranium and plutonium intermetallic compounds. These results provide a robust experimental basis for a new framework toward understanding the strongly-correlated behavior of actinide materials.

Nickel(II) uranium(IV) tris-ulfide.

Project description:Crystals of NiUS3 were obtained from the reaction of the elements Ni, U, S, and of GeI2 in a CsCl flux at 1173?K. Nickel(II) uranium(IV) tris-ulfide, NiUS3, has ortho-rhom-bic (Pnma) symmetry and crystallizes in the GdFeO3 structure type. The compound has a perovskite ABQ 3-like structure, with U occupying the inter-stitial sites of a NiS6 framework. The U atoms are coordinated by eight S atoms in a distorted bicapped trigonal-prismatic arrangement. The Ni atoms are coordinated by six S atoms in a slightly distorted octa-hedral arrangement. The asymmetric unit comprises one U site (site symmetry .m.), one Ni site (-1), and two S sites (1 and .m.).

Crystal structure of tris-(phenyl-seleno-lato-?Se)tris-(tetra-hydro-furan-?O)thulium(III).

Project description:In the title compound, [Tm(C6H5Se)3(C4H8O)3], the Tm(III) atom lies on a threefold rotation axis and is coordinated by three phenyl-seleno-late ligands and three tetra-hydro-furan ligands leading to a distorted fac-octa-hedral coordination environment. The Tm-Se and Tm-O bond lengths are 2.7692?(17) and 2.345?(10)?Å, respectively, and the bond angles are 91.32?(6)° for Se-Tm-Se, 92.6?(2) and 94.4?(2)° for Se-Tm-O, and 81.2?(3)° for O-Tm-O. In the crystal, the discrete complexes are linked by van der Waals inter-actions only. The crystal was refined as a non-merohedral twin (ratio = 0.65:0.35).

DFT + U Study of Uranium Dioxide and Plutonium Dioxide with Occupation Matrix Control.

Project description:DFT + U with occupation matrix control (OMC) is applied to study computationally bulk UO2 and PuO2, the latter for the first time. Using the PBESol functional in conjunction with OMC locates AFM and NM ground states for UO2 and PuO2, respectively, in agreement with experimental findings. By simulating the lattice parameter, magnetic moment, band gap, and densities of states, U = 4.0 eV is recommended for AFM UO2, yielding data close to experiments for all considered properties. U = 4.5 and 4.0 eV are recommended for NM and AFM PuO2, respectively, though much larger U values (c. 10 eV) are required to yield the most recently reported PuO2 band gap. For both oxides, several excited states have similar properties to the ground state, reinforcing the need to employ OMC wherever possible.

High effectiveness of pure polydopamine in extraction of uranium and plutonium from groundwater and seawater.

Project description:Sorption properties of polydopamine (PDA) for uranium and plutonium from an aqueous environment are reported at three different pH values (2, 4 and 6.5-7). In addition to deionized (DI) water, artificial groundwater (GW) and seawater (SW) were used with U uptake close to 100% in each case. PDA polymer has been identified as a material with extremely high sorption capacity Q max ∼500 mg g-1 of the polymer at pH 6.5 and high selectivity for uranium. Similar high sorption properties are revealed for plutonium uptake. PDA-uranyl and PDA-plutonium interactions responsible for the observed adsorption processes have been addressed with a set of experimental techniques including FTIR spectroscopy, electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry.

Project description:In the title salt, (C2H10N2)3[Pr2(SO4)6]·6H2O, the Pr(III) cation is surrounded ninefold by five sulfate groups (two monodentate and three chelating) and by one water mol-ecule [range of Pr-O bond lengths 2.383?(3) to 2.582?(3)?Å]. The [Pr(SO4)5(H2O)] groups are arranged in sheets parallel to (010). Two crystal water mol-ecules and two ethyl-enedi-ammonium cations (one with point group symmetry -1) connect the sheets via O-H?O and N-H?O hydrogen bonds from weak up to medium strength into a three-dimensional framework structure.

Crystal structure of tris-[4-(di-methyl-amino)-pyridinium] tris-(oxalato-?(2) O,O')chromate(III) tetra-hydrate.

Project description:In the title hybrid salt, (C7H11N2)3[Cr(C2O4)3]·4H2O, the central Cr(III) ion of the complex anion (point group symmetry 2) is coordinated by six O atoms from three chelating oxalate(2-) ligands in a slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination sphere. The Cr-O bond lengths vary from 1.9577?(11) to 1.9804?(11)?Å, while the chelate O-Cr-O angles range from 82.11?(6) to 93.41?(5)°. The 4-(di-methyl-amino)-pyridinium cations (one situated in a general position and one on a twofold rotation axis) are protonated at the pyridine N atoms. In the crystal, N-H?O and O-H?O hydrogen bonds link the cations and anions into a three-dimensional network. ?-? inter-actions between the pyridine rings of adjacent cations provide additional stabilization of the crystal packing, with the closest centroid-to-centroid distances being 3.541?(1) and 3.575?(1)?Å.

Direct determination of the intracellular oxidation state of plutonium.

Project description:Microprobe X-ray absorption near edge structure (?-XANES) measurements were used to determine directly, for the first time, the oxidation state of intracellular plutonium in individual 0.1-?m(2) areas within single rat pheochromocytoma cells (PC12). The living cells were incubated in vitro for 3 h in the presence of Pu added to the media in different oxidation states (Pu(III), Pu(IV), and Pu(VI)) and in different chemical forms. Regardless of the initial oxidation state or chemical form of Pu presented to the cells, the XANES spectra of the intracellular Pu deposits were always consistent with tetravalent Pu even though the intracellular milieu is generally reducing.
