Three-Dimensional SnS Decorated Carbon Nano-Networks as Anode Materials for Lithium and Sodium Ion Batteries.

ABSTRACT: The three-dimensional (3D) SnS decorated carbon nano-networks (SnS@C) were synthesized via a facile two-step method of freeze-drying combined with post-heat treatment. The lithium and sodium storage performances of above composites acting as anode materials were investigated. As anode materials for lithium ion batteries, a high reversible capacity of 780 mAh·g-1 for SnS@C composites can be obtained at 100 mA·g-1 after 100 cycles. Even cycled at a high current density of 2 A·g-1, the reversible capacity of this composite can be maintained at 610 mAh·g-1 after 1000 cycles. The initial charge capacity for sodium ion batteries can reach 333 mAh·g-1, and it retains a reversible capacity of 186 mAh·g-1 at 100 mA·g-1 after 100 cycles. The good lithium or sodium storage performances are likely attributed to the synergistic effects of the conductive carbon nano-networks and small SnS nanoparticles.

Project description:Tin (II) sulfide (SnS) has been regarded as an attractive anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high theoretical capacity. However, sulfide undergoes significant volume change during lithiation/delithiation, leading to rapid capacity degradation, which severely hinders its further practical application in lithium-ion batteries. Here, we report a simple and effective method for the synthesis of SnS@C/G composites, where SnS@C nanoparticles are strongly coupled onto the graphene oxide nanosheets through dopamine-derived carbon species. In such a designed architecture, the SnS@C/G composites show various advantages including buffering the volume expansion of Sn, suppressing the coarsening of Sn, and dissolving Li2S during the cyclic lithiation/delithiation process by graphene oxide and N-doped carbon. As a result, the SnS@C/G composite exhibits outstanding rate performance as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of up to 434 mAh g-1 at a current density of 5.0 A g-1 and excellent cycle stability with a capacity retention of 839 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 after 450 cycles.

Rational Design of 3D Honeycomb-Like SnS2 Quantum Dots/rGO Composites as High-Performance Anode Materials for Lithium/Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Structure pulverization and poor electrical conductivity of metal dichalcogenides result in serious capacity decay both in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). To resolve the above problems, a combination of metal dichalcogenides with conductive scaffolds as high-performance electrode materials has aroused tremendous interest recently. Herein, we synthesize a 3D honeycomb-like rGO anchored with SnS2 quantum dots (3D SnS2 QDs/rGO) composite via spray-drying and sulfidation. The unique 3D-ordered honeycomb-like structure can confine the volume change of SnS2 QDs in the lithiation/delithiation and sodiation/desodiation processes, provide enough space for electrolyte reservoirs, promote the conductivity of the SnS2 QDs, and improve the electron transfer. As a result, the 3D SnS2 QDs/rGO composite electrode delivers a high capacity and long cycling stability (862 mAh/g for LIB at 0.1 A/g after 200 cycles, 233 mAh/g for SIB at 0.5 A/g after 200 cycles). This study provides a feasible synthesis route for preparing 3D-ordered porous networks in varied materials for the development of high-performance LIBs and SIBs in future.

TiO₂ Nanobelt@Co₉S₈ Composites as Promising Anode Materials for Lithium and Sodium Ion Batteries.

Project description:TiO₂ anodes have attracted great attention due to their good cycling stability for lithium ion batteries and sodium ion batteries (LIBs and SIBs). Unfortunately, the low specific capacity and poor conductivity limit their practical application. The mixed phase TiO₂ nanobelt (anatase and TiO₂-B) based Co₉S₈ composites have been synthesized via the solvothermal reaction and subsequent calcination. During the formation process of hierarchical composites, glucose between TiO₂ nanobelts and Co₉S₈ serves as a linker to increase the nucleation and growth of sulfides on the surface of TiO₂ nanobelts. As anode materials for LIBs and SIBs, the composites combine the advantages of TiO₂ nanobelts with those of Co₉S₈ nanomaterials. The reversible specific capacity of TiO₂ nanobelt@Co₉S₈ composites is up to 889 and 387 mAh·g-1 at 0.1 A·g-1 after 100 cycles, respectively. The cooperation of excellent cycling stability of TiO₂ nanobelts and high capacities of Co₉S₈ nanoparticles leads to the good electrochemical performances of TiO₂ nanobelt@Co₉S₈ composites.

Monodisperse porous silicon spheres as anode materials for lithium ion batteries.

Project description:Highly monodisperse porous silicon nanospheres (MPSSs) are synthesized via a simple and scalable hydrolysis process with subsequent surface-protected magnesiothermic reduction. The spherical nature of the MPSSs allows for a homogenous stress-strain distribution within the structure during lithiation and delithiation, which dramatically improves the electrochemical stability. To fully extract the real performance of the MPSSs, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to enhance the electronic conductivity within the composite electrode structure, which has been verified to be an effective way to improve the rate and cycling performance of anodes based on nano-Si. The Li-ion battery (LIB) anodes based on MPSSs demonstrate a high reversible capacity of 3105 mAh g(-1). In particular, reversible Li storage capacities above 1500 mAh g(-1) were maintained after 500 cycles at a high rate of C/2. We believe this innovative approach for synthesizing porous Si-based LIB anode materials by using surface-protected magnesiothermic reduction can be readily applied to other types of SiOx nano/microstructures.

Anode-free sodium metal batteries as rising stars for lithium-ion alternatives.

Project description:With the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown, global supply chain crisis, and Russo-Ukrainian war, an energy-intensive society with sustainable, secure, affordable, and recyclable rechargeable batteries is increasingly out of reach. As demand soars, recent prototypes have shown that anode-free configurations, especially anode-free sodium metal batteries, offer realistic alternatives that are better than lithium-ion batteries in terms of energy density, cost, carbon footprint, and sustainability. This Perspective explores the current state of research on improving the performance of anode-free Na metal batteries from five key fields, as well as the impact on upstream industries compared to commercial batteries.

Activated Amorphous Carbon With High-Porosity Derived From Camellia Pollen Grains as Anode Materials for Lithium/Sodium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Carbonaceous anode materials are commonly utilized in the energy storage systems, while their unsatisfied electrochemical performances hardly meet the increasing requirements for advanced anode materials. Here, activated amorphous carbon (AAC) is synthesized by carbonizing renewable camellia pollen grains with naturally hierarchical structure, which not only maintains abundant micro- and mesopores with surprising specific surface area (660 m2 g-1), but also enlarges the interlayer spacing from 0.352 to 0.4 nm, effectively facilitating ions transport, intercalation, and adsorption. Benefiting from such unique characteristic, AAC exhibits 691.7 mAh g-1 after 1200 cycles at 2 A g-1, and achieves 459.7, 335.4, 288.7, 251.7, and 213.5 mAh g-1 at 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 A g-1 in rate response for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Additionally, reversible capacities of 324.8, 321.6, 312.1, 298.9, 282.3, 272.4 mAh g-1 at various rates of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 A g-1 are preserved for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The results reveal that the AAC anode derived from camellia pollen grains can display excellent cyclic life and superior rate performances, endowing the infinite potential to extend its applications in LIBs and SIBs.

ZIF-67-Derived CoSe/NC Composites as Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:As a typical metal selenide, CoSe is a kind of foreground anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its two-dimensional layer structure, good electrical conductivity, and high theoretical capacity. In this work, the original CoSe/N-doped carbon (CoSe/NC) composites were synthesized using ZIF-67 as a precursor, in which the CoSe nanoparticles are encapsulated in NC nanolayers and they are connected through C-Se bonds. The coating structure and strong chemical coupling make the NC nanolayers could better effectively enhance the lithium storage properties of CoSe/NC composites. As a consequence, the CoSe/NC composites deliver a reversible capacity of 310.11 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. Besides, the CoSe/NC composites show a distinct incremental behavior of capacity.

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon for Red Phosphorous Based Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Serving as conductive matrix and stress buffer, the carbon matrix plays a pivotal role in enabling red phosphorus to be a promising anode material for high capacity lithium ion batteries and sodium ion batteries. In this paper, nitrogen-doping is proved to effective enhance the interface interaction between carbon and red phosphorus. In detail, the adsorption energy between phosphorus atoms and oxygen-containing functional groups on the carbon is significantly reduced by nitrogen doping, as verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption mechanisms are further revealed on the basis of DFT (the first density functional theory) calculations. The RPNC (red phosphorus/nitrogen-doped carbon composite) material shows higher cycling stability and higher capacity than that of RPC (red phosphorus/carbon composite) anode. After 100 cycles, the RPNC still keeps discharge capacity of 1453 mAh g-1 at the current density of 300 mA g-1 (the discharge capacity of RPC after 100 cycles is 1348 mAh g-1). Even at 1200 mA g-1, the RPNC composite still delivers a capacity of 1178 mAh g-1. This work provides insight information about the interface interactions between composite materials, as well as new technology develops high performance phosphorus based anode materials.

Dealloying-Derived Nanoporous Cu6Sn5 Alloy as Stable Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:The volume expansion during Li ion insertion/extraction remains an obstacle for the application of Sn-based anode in lithium ion-batteries. Herein, the nanoporous (np) Cu6Sn5 alloy and Cu6Sn5/Sn composite were applied as a lithium-ion battery anode. The as-dealloyed np-Cu6Sn5 has an ultrafine ligament size of 40 nm and a high BET-specific area of 15.9 m2 g-1. The anode shows an initial discharge capacity as high as 1200 mA h g-1, and it remains a capacity of higher than 600 mA h g-1 for the initial five cycles at 0.1 A g-1. After 100 cycles, the anode maintains a stable capacity higher than 200 mA h g-1 for at least 350 cycles, with outstanding Coulombic efficiency. The ex situ XRD patterns reveal the reverse phase transformation between Cu6Sn5 and Li2CuSn. The Cu6Sn5/Sn composite presents a similar cycling performance with a slightly inferior rate performance compared to np-Cu6Sn5. The study demonstrates that dealloyed nanoporous Cu6Sn5 alloy could be a promising candidate for lithium-ion batteries.

Low-Cost and High-Performance Hard Carbon Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:As an anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), hard carbon (HC) presents high specific capacity and favorable cycling performance. However, high cost and low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of HC seriously limit its future commercialization for SIBs. A typical biowaste, mangosteen shell was selected as a precursor to prepare low-cost and high-performance HC via a facile one-step carbonization method, and the influence of different heat treatments on the morphologies, microstructures, and electrochemical performances was investigated systematically. The microstructure evolution studied using X-ray diffraction, Raman, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, along with electrochemical measurements, reveals the optimal carbonization condition of the mangosteen shell: HC carbonized at 1500 °C for 2 h delivers the highest reversible capacity of ∼330 mA h g-1 at a current density of 20 mA g-1, a capacity retention of ∼98% after 100 cycles, and an ICE of ∼83%. Additionally, the sodium-ion storage behavior of HC is deeply analyzed using galvanostatic intermittent titration and cyclic voltammetry technologies.
