Enhancing the stability and porosity of penetrated metal-organic frameworks through the insertion of coordination sites.

ABSTRACT: Guided by the insertion of coordination sites within ligands, an interpenetrated metal-organic framework NKU-112 and a self-penetrated framework NKU-113 were obtained. The two MOFs have similar cage-based framework structures, while NKU-113 reveals enhanced porosity and stability compared with NKU-112, owing to the self-penetrated structure induced by the additional chelating bipyridine moiety in the ligand. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that attempts to shift the structure topology of a MOF from interpenetrated to self-penetrated while achieving a delicate modulation of the location and distances within the penetrated structure by inserting new coordination sites.

Thermal decarboxylation for the generation of hierarchical porosity in isostructural metal-organic frameworks containing open metal sites.

Project description:The effect of metal-cluster redox identity on the thermal decarboxylation of a series of isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with tetracarboxylate-based ligands and trinuclear μ3-oxo clusters was investigated. The PCN-250 series of MOFs can consist of various metal combinations (Fe3, Fe/Ni, Fe/Mn, Fe/Co, Fe/Zn, Al3, In3, and Sc3). The Fe-based system can undergo a thermally induced reductive decarboxylation, producing a mixed valence cluster with decarboxylated ligand fragments subsequently eliminated to form uniform mesopores. We have extended the analysis to alternative monometallic and bimetallic PCN-250 systems to observe the cluster's effect on the decarboxylation process. Our results suggest that the propensity to undergo decarboxylation is directly related to the cluster redox accessibility, with poorly reducible metals, such as Al, In, and Sc, unable to thermally reduce at the readily accessible temperatures of the Fe-containing system. In contrast, the mixed-metal variants are all reducible. We report improvements in gas adsorption behavior, significantly the uniform increase in the heat of adsorption going from the microporous to hierarchically induced decarboxylated samples. This, along with Fe oxidation state changes from 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, suggests that reduction occurs at the clusters and is essential for mesopore formation. These results provide insight into the thermal behavior of redox-active MOFs and suggest a potential future avenue for generating mesoporosity using controlled cluster redox chemistry.

Fluoroarene Separations in Metal-Organic Frameworks with Two Proximal Mg2+ Coordination Sites.

Project description:Fluoroarenes are widely used in medicinal, agricultural, and materials chemistry, and yet their production remains a critical challenge in organic synthesis. Indeed, the nearly identical physical properties of these vital building blocks hinders their purification by traditional methods, such as flash chromatography or distillation. As a result, the Balz-Schiemann reaction is currently employed to prepare fluoroarenes instead of more atom-economical C-H fluorination reactions, which produce inseparable mixtures of regioisomers. Herein, we propose an alternative solution to this problem: the purification of mixtures of fluoroarenes using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Specifically, we demonstrate that controlling the interaction of fluoroarenes with adjacent coordinatively unsaturated Mg2+ centers within a MOF enables the separation of fluoroarene mixtures with unparalleled selectivities. Liquid-phase multicomponent equilibrium adsorption data and breakthrough measurements coupled with van der Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations reveal that the materials Mg2(dobdc) (dobdc4- = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) and Mg2(m-dobdc) (m-dobdc4- = 2,4-dioxidobenzene-1,5-dicarboxylate) are capable of separating the difluorobenzene isomers from one another. Additionally, these frameworks facilitate the separations of fluoroanisoles, fluorotoluenes, and fluorochlorobenzenes. In addition to enabling currently unfeasible separations for the production of fluoroarenes, our results suggest that carefully controlling the interaction of isomers with not one but two strong binding sites within a MOF provides a general strategy for achieving challenging liquid-phase separations.

Topology and porosity control of metal-organic frameworks through linker functionalization.

Project description:Tetratopic organic linkers have been extensively used in Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) where diverse topologies have been observed. Achieving meticulous control over the topologies to tune the pore sizes and shapes of the resulting materials, however, remains a great challenge. Herein, by introducing substituents to the backbone of tetratopic linkers to affect the linker conformation, phase-pure Zr-MOFs with different topologies and porosity were successfully obtained under the same synthetic conditions. The conversion of CO2 to valuable cyclic carbonates is a promising route for the mitigation of the greenhouse gas. Owing to the presence of substrate accessible Lewis acidic Zr(iv) sites in the 8-connected Zr6 nodes, the Zr-MOFs in this study have been investigated as heterogenous acid catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition to styrene oxide. The MOFs exhibited drastically different catalytic activities depending on their distinct pore structures. Compared to previously reported MOF materials, a superior catalytic activity was observed with the mesoporous NU-1008, giving an almost 100% conversion under mild conditions.

Sodium Ion Conductivity in Superionic IL-Impregnated Metal-Organic Frameworks: Enhancing Stability Through Structural Disorder.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are intriguing host materials in composite electrolytes due to their ability for tailoring host-guest interactions by chemical tuning of the MOF backbone. Here, we introduce particularly high sodium ion conductivity into the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 by impregnation with the sodium-salt-containing ionic liquid (IL) (Na0.1EMIM0.9)TFSI. We demonstrate an ionic conductivity exceeding 2 × 10-4 S · cm-1 at room temperature, with an activation energy as low as 0.26 eV, i.e., the highest reported performance for room temperature Na+-related ion conduction in MOF-based composite electrolytes to date. Partial amorphization of the ZIF-backbone by ball-milling results in significant enhancement of the composite stability towards exposure to ambient conditions, up to 20 days. While the introduction of network disorder decelerates IL exudation and interactions with ambient contaminants, the ion conductivity is only marginally affected, decreasing with decreasing crystallinity but still maintaining superionic behavior. This highlights the general importance of 3D networks of interconnected pores for efficient ion conduction in MOF/IL blends, whereas pore symmetry is a less stringent condition.

Linking defects, hierarchical porosity generation and desalination performance in metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Composite membranes with defective metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) connect the emerging fields of MOF topological modification, MOF-polymer interfacial engineering and composite material functionalization. Although defective MOFs can be fabricated via thermal or chemical treatment, the relationship between hierarchical MOF structure and their performance in a polymeric membrane matrix has so far not been investigated. Here we show how a modulator fumarate-based MIL-53(Al) microwave synthesis process results in defective MOFs. This ligand replacement process leads to materials with hierarchical porosity, which creates a higher mesopore volume and Brønsted acidity without compromising the crystalline structure and pH stability. Compared with stoichiometric ratios, increasing the reaction time leads to more effective defect generation. The subsequent incorporation of defective MOFs into polyvinyl alcohol pervaporation membranes can effectively promote the fresh water productivity in concentrated brine treatment, with salt rejection of >99.999%. The membranes also have good long-term operational stability with effective antifouling behavior. We provide evidence that topological engineering of the MOF surface is related to their physical and chemical behaviors in a polymeric matrix, opening up the possibility of MOF defect engineering to realize selective separations, catalysis and sensing within a polymeric matrix.

Direct Sintering Behavior of Metal Organic Frameworks/Coordination Polymers.

Project description:In this study, we investigate the sintering behavior and mechanisms of metal-organic frameworks/coordination polymers (CPs) through physical and microstructural characterization of [Zn(HPO4)(H2PO4)2]·2H2Im (ZPI; a melting CP, Im = imidazole) and ZIF-8 (a non-melting CP). By performing simple compaction and subsequent sintering, a bulk body of CPs was obtained without losing the macroscopic crystallinity. The sintering behavior was found to be dependent on the temperature, heating rate, and physical properties of the CPs and, in particular, their meltability. During sintering, shrinkage occurred in both the CPs, but the observed shrinkage rate of the ZPI was in the 10-20% range, whereas that of the ZIF-8 was less than 1%. Additionally, the sintering mechanisms of the ZPI and ZIF-8 varied between low and high temperatures, and in the case of ZPI, localized melting between the primary particles was the dominant mechanism on the high-temperature side. However, substantial shrinkage did not correspond to an increase in density; on the contrary, a decrease in the apparent density of ZPI was observed as the sintering temperature was increased. The sintering technique is well established and commercially available; thus, the results obtained in this study can be utilized for optimizing the manufacturing conditions of melting CPs.

Coordination-bond-directed synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks from metal-organic frameworks as templates.

Project description:Controlled synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) remains challenging, because the self-assembly of ligands is not only directed by weak hydrogen bonds, but also affected by other competing van der Waals forces. Herein, we demonstrate the coordination-bond-directed synthesis of HOFs using a preformed metal-organic framework (MOF) as the template. A MOF (CuI-TTFTB) based on two-coordinated CuI centers and tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate (TTFTB) ligands was initially synthesized. CuI-TTFTB was subsequently oxidized to the intermediate (CuII-TTFTB) and hydrated to the HOF product (TTFTB-HOF). Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation was realized throughout the MOF-to-HOF transformation so that the evolution of structures was directly observed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The oxidation and hydration of the CuI center are critical to breaking the Cu-carboxylate bonds, while the synergic corbelled S⋯S and π⋯π interactions in the framework ensured stability of materials during post-synthetic modification. This work not only provided a strategy to guide the design and discovery of new HOFs, but also linked the research of MOFs and HOFs.

Tuning porosity in macroscopic monolithic metal-organic frameworks for exceptional natural gas storage.

Project description:Widespread access to greener energy is required in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. A significant barrier to cleaner natural gas usage lies in the safety/efficiency limitations of storage technology. Despite highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrating record-breaking gas-storage capacities, their conventionally powdered morphology renders them non-viable. Traditional powder shaping utilising high pressure or chemical binders collapses porosity or creates low-density structures with reduced volumetric adsorption capacity. Here, we report the engineering of one of the most stable MOFs, Zr-UiO-66, without applying pressure or binders. The process yields centimetre-sized monoliths, displaying high microporosity and bulk density. We report the inclusion of variable, narrow mesopore volumes to the monoliths' macrostructure and use this to optimise the pore-size distribution for gas uptake. The optimised mixed meso/microporous monoliths demonstrate Type II adsorption isotherms to achieve benchmark volumetric working capacities for methane and carbon dioxide. This represents a critical advance in the design of air-stable, conformed MOFs for commercial gas storage.

Tailoring porosity and rotational dynamics in a series of octacarboxylate metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Modulation and precise control of porosity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is of critical importance to their materials function. Here we report modulation of porosity for a series of isoreticular octacarboxylate MOFs, denoted MFM-180 to MFM-185, via a strategy of selective elongation of metal-organic cages. Owing to the high ligand connectivity, these MOFs do not show interpenetration, and are robust structures that have permanent porosity. Interestingly, activated MFM-185a shows a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 4,734 m2 g-1 for an octacarboxylate MOF. These MOFs show remarkable CH4 and CO2 adsorption properties, notably with simultaneously high gravimetric and volumetric deliverable CH4 capacities of 0.24 g g-1 and 163 vol/vol (298 K, 5-65 bar) recorded for MFM-185a due to selective elongation of tubular cages. The dynamics of molecular rotors in deuterated MFM-180a-d16 and MFM-181a-d16 were investigated by variable-temperature 2H solid-state NMR spectroscopy to reveal the reorientation mechanisms within these materials. Analysis of the flipping modes of the mobile phenyl groups, their rotational rates, and transition temperatures paves the way to controlling and understanding the role of molecular rotors through design of organic linkers within porous MOF materials.

Nanoscale metal-organic frameworks as potential multimodal contrast enhancing agents.

Project description:Nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) based on Gd3+ centers and benzenedicarboxylate and benzenetricarboxylate bridging ligands were synthesized using reverse microemulsions and characterized using SEM, PXRD, and TGA. These NMOFs exhibit extraordinarily large R1 and R2 relaxivities because of the presence of up to tens of millions of Gd3+ centers in each nanoparticle and are thus efficient T1 and T2 contrast agents for MRI. The NMOFs can also be made highly luminescent by doping with Eu3+ or Tb3+ centers. The results from this work suggest that NMOFs can be used as potential contrast agents for multimodal imaging.
