Patient satisfaction and experience with anesthesia: A multicenter survey in Saudi population.

ABSTRACT: Background and Objectives:Patients' satisfaction of anesthesia outcomes is a major part of the overall quality of health care. The aim of this study is to evaluate patient's satisfaction whether pre- or post-operative as well as overall impression using a multicenter prespecified survey tool. Methods:Three hundred and three patients who underwent surgery regardless the type of anesthesia were surveyed. The interview conducted face-to-face before surgery then within the first 24 h of surgery. We recorded all basic demographics of patients, the quality of postoperative symptoms control, and the impression about anesthesia team. Results:The overall satisfaction level was moderate (56.5%) with nearly half of the patients dissatisfied with their anesthetic care due to different reasons. Nausea and vomiting control was the most common postoperative reasons for dissatisfaction followed by pain control with 35.6% and 31.7%, respectively. Conclusion:Type of anesthesia, giving an informative visit to the patient, and the control of postoperative symptoms are the most important predictors of patients' satisfaction.

Project description:BackgroundPatient experience surveys are important tools for improving the quality of cancer services, but the representativeness of responders is a concern. Increasingly, patient surveys that traditionally used postal questionnaires are incorporating an online response option. However, the characteristics and experience ratings of online responders are poorly understood.ObjectiveWe sought to examine predictors of postal or online response mode, and associations with patient experience in the (English) Cancer Patient Experience Survey.MethodsWe analyzed data from 71,186 patients with cancer recently treated in National Health Service hospitals who responded to the Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2015. Using logistic regression, we explored patient characteristics associated with greater probability of online response and whether, after adjustment for patient characteristics, the online response was associated with a more or less critical evaluation of cancer care compared to the postal response.ResultsOf the 63,134 patients included in the analysis, 4635 (7.34%) responded online. In an adjusted analysis, male (women vs men: odds ratio [OR] 0.50, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.46-0.54), younger (<55 vs 65-74 years: OR 3.49, 95% CI 3.21-3.80), least deprived (most vs least deprived quintile: OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.51-0.64), and nonwhite (nonwhite vs white ethnic group: OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.24-1.51) patients were more likely to respond online. Compared to postal responders, after adjustment for patient characteristics, online responders had a higher likelihood of reporting an overall satisfied experience of care (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.16-1.32). For 34 of 49 other items, online responders more frequently reported a less than positive experience of care (8 reached statistical significance), and the associations were positive for the remaining 15 of 49 items (2 reached statistical significance).ConclusionsIn the context of a national survey of patients with cancer, online and postal responders tend to differ in their characteristics and rating of satisfaction. Associations between online response and reported experience were generally small and mostly nonsignificant, but with a tendency toward less than positive ratings, although not consistently. Whether the observed associations between response mode and reported experience were causal needs to be examined using experimental survey designs.

Project description:IntroductionPatient satisfaction is a relative and complex concept, that mainly depends on the balance between patient's expected and perceived quality of care. Measuring patient satisfaction is important to assess the continuous quality and improvement in anesthesia services, highly affected by anesthetist patient interaction, perioperative anesthetic management and postoperative follow up. The aim of this study was to assess perioperative adult surgical patient satisfaction and its predictors following surgery and anesthesia services in three general Hospitals in a low income country.MethodsMulticenter prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in all general hospitals found in North Shewa Amhara Regional State hospitals from February to April 2021. After obtaining ethical approval from the institutional review board, 411 willing patients have participated in this study. Data was collected by chart review and face-to-face questions after 24 h of the postoperative period. The level of patient satisfaction was measured via a 5-point Likert scale. Descriptive statistics were presented in frequency and percentage. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were fit to identify the variables, which had an association with the outcome variable. P-values<0.2 for bivariate and <0.05 for multivariate and adjusted odds ratio were used to consider statistically significant. This study is registered with research unique identifying number of "researchregistry7502".ResultAmong 411 participants with a response rate of 96.9%; 61.8% were females and 54.7% had surgery under spinal anesthesia. The overall patient satisfaction was 64%. History of anesthesia exposure, premedication, spinal anesthesia and postoperative pain were predictive factors for patient satisfaction after perioperative anesthesia service with AOR (95% CI) P value of 2.311(1.244-4.294)0.008, 2.213(1.277-3.835) 0.005, 2.707(1.458-5.029) 0.002 and 2.430(1.452-4.065) <0.001 respectively.ConclusionIn general the overall patient satisfaction towards perioperative anesthesia service was low in contrast to many previous studies. Factors that cause dissatisfaction should be prevented or better treated and every stakeholder should be trained and participated.

Project description:BackgroundNER1006 (Plenvu®, Salix Pharmaceuticals, Bridgewater, NJ) is a 1 L polyethylene glycol bowel preparation indicated for colonoscopy in adults. A US online survey assessed real-world ease of use and treatment satisfaction in individuals who received NER1006.MethodsAdults were recruited from 444 US community gastrointestinal practices and provided a kit number for enrollment into an online survey to be completed within 2 weeks. Survey questions evaluated colonoscopy history and prior bowel preparation(s) prescribed, patient experience during NER1006 administration, and patient satisfaction with the bowel preparation process. A 9-point predefined grading scale was used to evaluate ease of NER1006 preparation and consumption (range, 1 "very difficult" to 9 "very easy"); the perceived importance of volume requirement and clear liquid options (range, 1 "not important at all" to 9 "very important"); and patient satisfaction (range, 1 "not satisfied at all" to 9 "very satisfied").Results1630 patients were enrolled, 1606 underwent colonoscopy, and 1598 completed the survey between September 15, 2018 and February 28, 2019. Among 1606 patients who had a colonoscopy, 62.5% were female, and the mean patient age was 54.4 years (range 18-89 years). Most patients (74.7%) did not report a family history of colon cancer, 62.6% had undergone prior colonoscopy, and 64.8% were undergoing colonoscopy for routine colorectal cancer screening. A majority (76.1%) of patients who completed the survey reported that NER1006 was very easy to prepare and take, and 89.9% were very or moderately satisfied with NER1006 overall. Most (97.6%) patients reported consuming all or most of the bowel preparation. Among 1005 patients with previous bowel preparation use, 84.7% indicated that their experience with NER1006 was much better or better (65.3%) or about the same (19.4%) compared with previously used bowel preparations, while only 15.3% rated NER1006 as worse or much worse.ConclusionsIn this first real-world, US multicenter survey, patient-reported experience with NER1006 as a bowel preparation for colonoscopy was favorable and adherence was high. The majority of patients were very or moderately satisfied with the overall experience and found it much better/better than previously used bowel preparations.Trial registrationNot applicable.
