ABSTRACT: A cobalt-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst efficiently promotes an ortho C-H alkenylation reaction of pivalophenone N-H imine with an alkenyl phosphate. The reaction tolerates various substituted pivalophenone N-H imines as well as cyclic and acyclic alkenyl phosphates.

Project description:A method for cobalt-catalyzed, aminoquinoline- and picolinamide-directed C(sp(2))-H bond alkenylation by alkynes was developed. The method shows excellent functional-group tolerance and both internal and terminal alkynes are competent substrates for the coupling. The reaction employs a Co(OAc)2?4?H2O catalyst, Mn(OAc)2 co-catalyst, and oxygen (from air) as a terminal oxidant.

Ir(iii)-catalyzed thioether directed arene C-H alkenylation.

Project description:In this study, we demonstrate an Ir(iii)-catalyzed thioether directed alkenylation of arene C-H bonds under mild reaction conditions. The selectivity for mono- or di-alkenylation is controlled by the concentration of alkene and oxidant loading. Various functional groups are tolerated, and moderate to good yields of alkenylated products are achieved.

Directed nickel-catalyzed 1,2-dialkylation of alkenyl carbonyl compounds.

Project description:A nickel-catalyzed conjunctive cross-coupling of non-conjugated alkenes, alkyl halides, and alkylzinc reagents is reported. Regioselectivity is controlled by chelation of a removable bidentate 8-aminoquinoline directing group. Under optimized conditions, a wide range of 1,2-dialkylated products can be accessed in moderate to excellent yields. To the best of our knowledge, this report represents the first example of three-component 1,2-dialkylation of non-conjugated alkenes to introduce differentiated alkyl fragments.

Directed, nickel-catalyzed 1,2-alkylsulfenylation of alkenyl carbonyl compounds.

Project description:We report a regioselective, nickel-catalyzed syn-1,2-carbosulfenylation of non-conjugated alkenyl carbonyl compounds with alkyl/arylzinc nucleophiles and tailored N-S electrophiles. This method allows the simultaneous installation of a variety of C(sp3) and S(Ar) (or Se(Ar)) groups onto unactivated alkenes, which complements previously developed 1,2-carbosulfenylation methodology in which only C(sp2) nucleophiles are compatible. A bidentate directing auxiliary controls regioselectivity, promotes high syn-stereoselectivity with a variety of E- and Z-internal alkenes, and enables the use of an array of electrophilic sulfenyl (and seleno) electrophiles. Among compatible electrophiles, those with N-alkyl-benzamide leaving groups were found to be especially effective, as determined through comprehensive structure-reactivity mapping.

Directed, Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Enantioselective anti-Carboboration of Alkenyl Carbonyl Compounds.

Project description:A substrate-directed enantioselective anti-carboboration reaction of alkenes has been developed, wherein a carbon-based nucleophile and a boron moiety are installed across the C=C bond through a 5-membered palladacycle intermediate. A preliminary result also shows it is possible to extend this reaction to alkenes that are more distal from the directing group and react via a 6-membered palladacycle. The reaction is promoted by a palladium(II) catalyst and a monodentate oxazoline ligand. A range of enantioenriched secondary alkylboronate products were obtained with moderate to high enantioselectivity that could be further upgraded by recrystallization. This work represents an efficient method to synthesize versatile and valuable alkylboronate building blocks. Building on an earlier mechanistic proposal by Peng, He, and Chen, a revised model is proposed to account for the stereoconvergent nature of this transformation.

Rhodium(i)-catalyzed C6-selective C-H alkenylation and polyenylation of 2-pyridones with alkenyl and conjugated polyenyl carboxylic acids.

Project description:A versatile Rh(i)-catalyzed C6-selective decarbonylative C-H alkenylation of 2-pyridones with readily available, and inexpensive alkenyl carboxylic acids has been developed. This directed dehydrogenative cross-coupling reaction affords 6-alkenylated 2-pyridones that would otherwise be difficult to access using conventional C-H functionalization protocols. The reaction occurs with high efficiency and is tolerant of a broad range of functional groups. A wide scope of alkenyl carboxylic acids, including challenging conjugated polyene carboxylic acids, are amenable to this transformation and no addition of external oxidant is required. Mechanistic studies revealed that (1) Boc2O acts as the activator for the in situ transformation of the carboxylic acids into anhydrides before oxidative addition by the Rh catalyst, (2) a decarbonylation step is involved in the catalytic cycle, and (3) the C-H bond cleavage is likely the turnover-limiting step.

Photoredox-Catalyzed Alkenylation of Benzylsulfonium Salts.

Project description:Visible light-mediated radical alkenylation of benzylsulfonium salts was achieved by means of fac-Ir(ppy)3 as a photocatalyst, giving allylbenzenes as products. A variety of functional groups, such as halogen, ester, and cyano, were well tolerated in this transformation. Starting benzylsulfonium salts could be readily prepared from benzyl alcohols by an acid-mediated substitution, increasing the synthetic utility of this transformation.

Aminoquinoline-directed, cobalt-catalyzed carbonylation of sulfonamide sp2 C-H bonds.

Project description:We report a method for cobalt-catalyzed, aminoquinoline-directed sp2 C-H bond carbonylation of sulfonamides. The reactions proceed in a dichloroethane solvent, and employ diisopropyl azodicarboxylate as a carbon monoxide source, Mn(OAc)2 as a cooxidant and potassium pivalate as a base. Halogen, ester, and amide functionalities are compatible with the reaction conditions. This method allows for a short and efficient synthesis of saccharin derivatives.

A Convergent Synthesis of Functionalized Alkenyl Halides through Cobalt(III)-Catalyzed Three-Component C-H Bond Addition.

Project description:A CoIII -catalyzed three-component coupling of C(sp2 )-H bonds, alkynes, and halogenating agents to give alkenyl halides is reported. This transformation proceeds with high regio- and diastereoselectivity, and is effective for a broad range of aryl and alkyl terminal alkynes. Diverse C-H bond partners also exhibit good reactivity for a range of heteroaryl and aryl systems as well as synthetically useful secondary and tertiary amide, urea, and pyrazole directing groups. This multicomponent transformation is also compatible with allenes in place of alkynes to furnish tetrasubstituted alkenyl halides, showcasing the first halo-arylation of allenes.

Palladium-catalyzed enantioselective alkenylation of alkenylbenzene derivatives.

Project description:A regioselective and enantioselective palladium-catalyzed relay Heck alkenylation of alkenylbenzene derivatives to construct remote stereocenters is disclosed. Various β-substituted styrenes were readily obtained in moderate yields with good to excellent levels of enantioselectivity. This strategy provides rapid access to enantioenriched δ, ε, ζ, and η-alkenyl aryl compounds from simple starting materials. Mechanistic studies suggest that termination of the relay reaction is controlled by affinity of the arene for the Pd complex during migration.
