The Min system negatively regulates the position of the Z ring, which serves as a scaffold for the divisome that mediates bacterial cytokinesis. In <i>Escherichia coli</i>, this system consists of MinC, which antagonizes assembly of the tubulin homologue FtsZ. MinC is recruited to the membrane by MinD and induced by MinE to oscillate between the cell poles.
