Thermodynamic limit for synthesis of metastable inorganic materials.

ABSTRACT: Realizing the growing number of possible or hypothesized metastable crystalline materials is extremely challenging. There is no rigorous metric to identify which compounds can or cannot be synthesized. We present a thermodynamic upper limit on the energy scale, above which the laboratory synthesis of a polymorph is highly unlikely. The limit is defined on the basis of the amorphous state, and we validate its utility by effectively classifying more than 700 polymorphs in 41 common inorganic material systems in the Materials Project for synthesizability. The amorphous limit is highly chemistry-dependent and is found to be in complete agreement with our knowledge of existing polymorphs in these 41 systems, whether made by the nature or in a laboratory. Quantifying the limits of metastability for realizable compounds, the approach is expected to find major applications in materials discovery.

Assessing Thermodynamic Selectivity of Solid-State Reactions for the Predictive Synthesis of Inorganic Materials.

Project description:Synthesis is a major challenge in the discovery of new inorganic materials. Currently, there is limited theoretical guidance for identifying optimal solid-state synthesis procedures. We introduce two selectivity metrics, primary and secondary competition, to assess the favorability of target/impurity phase formation in solid-state reactions. We used these metrics to analyze 3520 solid-state reactions in the literature, ranking existing approaches to popular target materials. Additionally, we implemented these metrics in a data-driven synthesis planning workflow and demonstrated its application in the synthesis of barium titanate (BaTiO3). Using an 18-element chemical reaction network with first-principles thermodynamic data from the Materials Project, we identified 82985 possible BaTiO3 synthesis reactions and selected 9 for experimental testing. Characterization of reaction pathways via synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction reveals that our selectivity metrics correlate with observed target/impurity formation. We discovered two efficient reactions using unconventional precursors (BaS/BaCl2 and Na2TiO3) that produce BaTiO3 faster and with fewer impurities than conventional methods, highlighting the importance of considering complex chemistries with additional elements during precursor selection. Our framework provides a foundation for predictive inorganic synthesis, facilitating the optimization of existing recipes and the discovery of new materials, including those not easily attainable with conventional precursors.

In situ studies of a platform for metastable inorganic crystal growth and materials discovery.

Project description:Rapid shifts in the energy, technological, and environmental demands of materials science call for focused and efficient expansion of the library of functional inorganic compounds. To achieve the requisite efficiency, we need a materials discovery and optimization paradigm that can rapidly reveal all possible compounds for a given reaction and composition space. Here we provide such a paradigm via in situ X-ray diffraction measurements spanning solid, liquid flux, and recrystallization processes. We identify four new ternary sulfides from reactive salt fluxes in a matter of hours, simultaneously revealing routes for ex situ synthesis and crystal growth. Changing the flux chemistry, here accomplished by increasing sulfur content, permits comparison of the allowable crystalline building blocks in each reaction space. The speed and structural information inherent to this method of in situ synthesis provide an experimental complement to computational efforts to predict new compounds and uncover routes to targeted materials by design.

Text-mined dataset of inorganic materials synthesis recipes.

Project description:Materials discovery has become significantly facilitated and accelerated by high-throughput ab-initio computations. This ability to rapidly design interesting novel compounds has displaced the materials innovation bottleneck to the development of synthesis routes for the desired material. As there is no a fundamental theory for materials synthesis, one might attempt a data-driven approach for predicting inorganic materials synthesis, but this is impeded by the lack of a comprehensive database containing synthesis processes. To overcome this limitation, we have generated a dataset of "codified recipes" for solid-state synthesis automatically extracted from scientific publications. The dataset consists of 19,488 synthesis entries retrieved from 53,538 solid-state synthesis paragraphs by using text mining and natural language processing approaches. Every entry contains information about target material, starting compounds, operations used and their conditions, as well as the balanced chemical equation of the synthesis reaction. The dataset is publicly available and can be used for data mining of various aspects of inorganic materials synthesis.

Towards Predictive Synthesis of Inorganic Materials Using Network Science.

Project description:Accelerating materials discovery is the cornerstone of modern technological competitiveness. Yet, the inorganic synthesis of new compounds is often an important bottleneck in this quest. Well-established quantum chemistry and experimental synthesis methods combined with consolidated network science approaches might provide revolutionary knowledge to tackle this challenge. Recent pioneering studies in this direction have shown that the topological analysis of material networks hold great potential to effectively explore the synthesizability of inorganic compounds. In this Perspective we discuss the most exciting work in this area, in particular emerging new physicochemical insights and general concepts on how network science can significantly help reduce the timescales required to discover new materials and find synthetic routes for their fabrication. We also provide a perspective on outstanding problems, challenges and open questions.

Metastable spiking networks in the replica-mean-field limit.

Project description:Characterizing metastable neural dynamics in finite-size spiking networks remains a daunting challenge. We propose to address this challenge in the recently introduced replica-mean-field (RMF) limit. In this limit, networks are made of infinitely many replicas of the finite network of interest, but with randomized interactions across replicas. Such randomization renders certain excitatory networks fully tractable at the cost of neglecting activity correlations, but with explicit dependence on the finite size of the neural constituents. However, metastable dynamics typically unfold in networks with mixed inhibition and excitation. Here, we extend the RMF computational framework to point-process-based neural network models with exponential stochastic intensities, allowing for mixed excitation and inhibition. Within this setting, we show that metastable finite-size networks admit multistable RMF limits, which are fully characterized by stationary firing rates. Technically, these stationary rates are determined as the solutions of a set of delayed differential equations under certain regularity conditions that any physical solutions shall satisfy. We solve this original problem by combining the resolvent formalism and singular-perturbation theory. Importantly, we find that these rates specify probabilistic pseudo-equilibria which accurately capture the neural variability observed in the original finite-size network. We also discuss the emergence of metastability as a stochastic bifurcation, which can be interpreted as a static phase transition in the RMF limits. In turn, we expect to leverage the static picture of RMF limits to infer purely dynamical features of metastable finite-size networks, such as the transition rates between pseudo-equilibria.

The thermodynamic scale of inorganic crystalline metastability.

Project description:The space of metastable materials offers promising new design opportunities for next-generation technological materials, such as complex oxides, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, steels, and beyond. Although metastable phases are ubiquitous in both nature and technology, only a heuristic understanding of their underlying thermodynamics exists. We report a large-scale data-mining study of the Materials Project, a high-throughput database of density functional theory-calculated energetics of Inorganic Crystal Structure Database structures, to explicitly quantify the thermodynamic scale of metastability for 29,902 observed inorganic crystalline phases. We reveal the influence of chemistry and composition on the accessible thermodynamic range of crystalline metastability for polymorphic and phase-separating compounds, yielding new physical insights that can guide the design of novel metastable materials. We further assert that not all low-energy metastable compounds can necessarily be synthesized, and propose a principle of 'remnant metastability'-that observable metastable crystalline phases are generally remnants of thermodynamic conditions where they were once the lowest free-energy phase.

Dataset of solution-based inorganic materials synthesis procedures extracted from the scientific literature.

Project description:The development of a materials synthesis route is usually based on heuristics and experience. A possible new approach would be to apply data-driven approaches to learn the patterns of synthesis from past experience and use them to predict the syntheses of novel materials. However, this route is impeded by the lack of a large-scale database of synthesis formulations. In this work, we applied advanced machine learning and natural language processing techniques to construct a dataset of 35,675 solution-based synthesis procedures extracted from the scientific literature. Each procedure contains essential synthesis information including the precursors and target materials, their quantities, and the synthesis actions and corresponding attributes. Every procedure is also augmented with the reaction formula. Through this work, we are making freely available the first large dataset of solution-based inorganic materials synthesis procedures.

A General Synthesis Method for Covalent Organic Framework and Inorganic 2D Materials Hybrids.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) inorganic/organic hybrids provide a versatile platform for diverse applications, including electronic, catalysis, and energy storage devices. The recent surge in 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has introduced an organic counterpart for the development of advanced 2D organic/inorganic hybrids with improved electronic coupling, charge separation, and carrier mobility. However, existing synthesis methods have primarily focused on few-layered film structures, which limits scalability for practical applications. Herein, we present a general synthesis approach for a range of COF/inorganic 2D material hybrids, utilizing 2D inorganic materials as both catalysts and inorganic building blocks. By leveraging the intrinsic Lewis acid sites on the inorganic 2D materials such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and transition metal dichalcogenides, COFs with diverse functional groups and topologies can grow on the surface of inorganic 2D materials. The controlled 2D morphology and excellent solution dispersibility of the resulting hybrids allow for easy processing into films through vacuum filtration. As proof of concept, hBN/COF films were employed as filters for Rhodamine 6G removal under flow-through conditions, achieving a removal rate exceeding 93%. The present work provides a simple and versatile synthesis method for the scalable fabrication of COF/inorganic 2D hybrids, offering exciting opportunities for practical applications such as water treatment and energy storage.

Precursor recommendation for inorganic synthesis by machine learning materials similarity from scientific literature.

Project description:Synthesis prediction is a key accelerator for the rapid design of advanced materials. However, determining synthesis variables such as the choice of precursor materials is challenging for inorganic materials because the sequence of reactions during heating is not well understood. In this work, we use a knowledge base of 29,900 solid-state synthesis recipes, text-mined from the scientific literature, to automatically learn which precursors to recommend for the synthesis of a novel target material. The data-driven approach learns chemical similarity of materials and refers the synthesis of a new target to precedent synthesis procedures of similar materials, mimicking human synthesis design. When proposing five precursor sets for each of 2654 unseen test target materials, the recommendation strategy achieves a success rate of at least 82%. Our approach captures decades of heuristic synthesis data in a mathematical form, making it accessible for use in recommendation engines and autonomous laboratories.

Exploring Metastable Phases During Lithiation of Organic Battery Electrode Materials.

Project description:In this work, the Li-ion insertion mechanism in organic electrode materials is investigated through the lens of atomic-scale models based on first-principles theory. Starting with a structural analysis, the interplay of density functional theory with evolutionary and potential-mapping algorithms is used to resolve the crystal structure of the different (de)lithiated phases. These methods elucidate different lithiation reaction pathways and help to explore the formation of metastable phases and predict one- or multi-electron reactions, which are still poorly understood for organic intercalation electrodes. The cathode material dilithium 2,5-oxyterephthalate (operating at 2.6 V vs. Li/Li+) is investigated in depth as a case study, owing to its rich redox chemistry. When compared with recent experimental results, it is demonstrated that metastable phases with peculiar ring-ring molecular interactions are more likely to be controlling the redox reactions thermodynamics and consequently the battery voltage.
