Ordered nanopore arrays with large interpore distances via one-step anodization.

ABSTRACT: Preparation of pre-patterned alumina substrates using bottom-up techniques compatible with nanotechnology applications is still a challenge. We present a novel methodology to achieve superior order in 'anodic' alumina with large interpore distances by a convenient one-step anodization process. The use of transparent insulators renders such anodic layers applicable as templates for nanostructured photovoltaic or photoelectrochemical devices.

Nanopatterning of steel by one-step anodization for anti-adhesion of bacteria.

Project description:Surface nanopatterning of metals has been an effective technique for improved performance and functionalization. However, it is of great challenge to fabricate nanostructure on carbon steels despite their extensive use and urgent needs to maintain the performance reliability and durability. Here, we report a one-step anodization technique to nanopattern a carbon steel in 50 wt.% NaOH solution for highly effective anti-adhesion by sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB), i.e., Desulfovibrio desulfuricans subsp. desulfuricans (Beijerinck) Kluyver and van Niel. We characterize the morphology, structure, composition, and surface roughness of the nanostructured film formed on the steel as a function of anodizing potential. We quantify the surface hydrophobicity by contact angle measurements, and the SRB adhesion by fluorescent analysis. The optimal anodization potential of 2.0?V is determined for the best performance of anti-adhesion of SRB to the steel, resulting in a 23.5 times of reduction of SRB adhesion compared to bare steel. We discuss the mechanisms for the film formation on the steel during anodization, and the high-performance anti-adhesion of bacteria to nanopatterned steels. Our technique is simple, cost-effective and environment-friendly, providing a promising alternative for industry-scale surface nanopatterning of carbon steels for effective controlling of bacterial adhesion.

Fabrication of Self-Ordered Alumina Films with Large Interpore Distance by Janus Anodization in Citric Acid.

Project description:Self-organized porous anodic alumina (PAA) formed by electrochemical anodization have become a fundamental tool to develop various functional nanomaterials. However, it is still a great challenge to break the interpore distance (Dint) limit (500 nm) by using current anodization technologies of mild anodization (MA) and hard anodization (HA). Here, we reported a new anodization mode named "Janus anodization" (JA) to controllably fabricate self-ordered PAA with large Dint at high voltage of 350-400 V. JA naturally occurs as anodizing Al foils in citric acid solution, which possessing both the characteristics of MA and HA. The process can be divided into two stages: I, slow pore nucleation stage similar to MA; II, unequilibrium self-organization process similar to HA. The as-prepared films had the highest modulus (7.0 GPa) and hardness (127.2 GPa) values compared with the alumina obtained by MA and HA. The optical studies showed that the black films have low reflectance (<10 %) in the wavelength range of 250-1500 nm and photoluminescence property. Dint can be tuned between 645-884 nm by controlling citric acid concentration or anodization voltage. JA is a potential technology to efficiently and controllably fabricate microstructured or hybrid micro- and nanostructured materials with novel properties.

GAVISUNK: genome assembly validation via inter-SUNK distances in Oxford Nanopore reads.

Project description:MotivationHighly contiguous de novo phased diploid genome assemblies are now feasible for large numbers of species and individuals. One-step regression and classification with cross-point resistive memory arrays.

Project description:Machine learning has been getting attention in recent years as a tool to process big data generated by the ubiquitous sensors used in daily life. High-speed, low-energy computing machines are in demand to enable real-time artificial intelligence processing of such data. These requirements challenge the current metal-oxide-semiconductor technology, which is limited by Moore's law approaching its end and the communication bottleneck in conventional computing architecture. Novel computing concepts, architectures, and devices are thus strongly needed to accelerate data-intensive applications. Here, we show that a cross-point resistive memory circuit with feedback configuration can train traditional machine learning algorithms such as linear regression and logistic regression in just one step by computing the pseudoinverse matrix of the data within the memory. One-step learning is further supported by simulations of the prediction of housing price in Boston and the training of a two-layer neural network for MNIST digit recognition.

Solving matrix equations in one step with cross-point resistive arrays.

Project description:Conventional digital computers can execute advanced operations by a sequence of elementary Boolean functions of 2 or more bits. As a result, complicated tasks such as solving a linear system or solving a differential equation require a large number of computing steps and an extensive use of memory units to store individual bits. To accelerate the execution of such advanced tasks, in-memory computing with resistive memories provides a promising avenue, thanks to analog data storage and physical computation in the memory. Here, we show that a cross-point array of resistive memory devices can directly solve a system of linear equations, or find the matrix eigenvectors. These operations are completed in just one single step, thanks to the physical computing with Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws, and thanks to the negative feedback connection in the cross-point circuit. Algebraic problems are demonstrated in hardware and applied to classical computing tasks, such as ranking webpages and solving the Schrödinger equation in one step.

Preparation of ordered nanohole array structures by anodization of prepatterned Cu, Zn, and Ni.

Project description:Anodic porous oxides with ordered nanohole array structures were prepared by the formation of concave arrays on the surface of Cu, Zn, and Ni substrates and the subsequent anodization of the prepatterned substrates. The concave arrays on the surface of the substrate were formed by Ar ion milling using an alumina mask. Although the anodization of Cu, Zn, and Ni substrates without prepatterning generates spongelike porous structures, ordered arrays of cylindrical nanoholes were obtained by the anodization of prepatterned substrates. The interpore distance of the obtained nanohole arrays was controlled by changing the period of the concave arrays. Crystallized ordered nanohole arrays of Cu2O, ZnO, and NiO were also obtained by heat treatment. The obtained anodic porous oxide with ordered nanohole array structures can be used for various applications such as photocatalysts, solar cells, and sensors.

Ordered arrays of nanoporous gold nanoparticles.

Project description:A combination of a "top-down" approach (substrate-conformal imprint lithography) and two "bottom-up" approaches (dewetting and dealloying) enables fabrication of perfectly ordered 2-dimensional arrays of nanoporous gold nanoparticles. The dewetting of Au/Ag bilayers on the periodically prepatterned substrates leads to the interdiffusion of Au and Ag and the formation of an array of Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles. The array of alloy nanoparticles is transformed into an array of nanoporous gold nanoparticles by a following dealloying step. Large areas of this new type of material arrangement can be realized with this technique. In addition, this technique allows for the control of particle size, particle spacing, and ligament size (or pore size) by varying the period of the structure, total metal layer thickness, and the thickness ratio of the as-deposited bilayers.

Generating highly ordered DNA nanostrand arrays.

Project description:Highly ordered arrays of stretched DNA molecules were generated over the millimeter scale by using a modified molecular combing method and soft lithography. Topological micropatterning on polydimethyl siloxane stamps was used to mediate the dynamic assembly of DNA molecules into arranged nonostrand arrays. These arrays consisted of either short nanostrands of several micrometers with fixed length and orientation or long nanostrands up to several hundred micrometers in length. The nanostrand arrays were transferred onto flat solid surfaces by contact printing, allowing for the creation of more complex patterns. This technique has potential applications for the construction of next-generation DNA chips and functional circuits of DNA-based 1D nanostructures.

Formation of Highly Ordered Platinum Nanowire Arrays on Silicon via Laser-Induced Self-Organization.

Project description:Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) provide an elegant solution for the generation of highly ordered periodic patterns on the surface of solids. In this study, LIPSS are utilized for the formation of periodic platinum nanowire arrays. In a process based on laser-stimulated self-organization, platinum thin films, sputter-deposited onto silicon, are transformed into nanowire arrays with an average periodicity of 538 nm. The width of the platinum nanowires is adjustable in a range from 20 nm to 250 nm by simply adjusting the thickness of the initial platinum thin films in a range from 0.3 nm to 4.3 nm. With increasing width, platinum nanowires show a rising tendency to sink into the surface of the silicon wafer, thus indicating alloying between platinum and silicon upon LIPSS-formation by a nanosecond-pulsed laser. The Pt/silicon wires may be etched away, leaving a complementary nanostructure in the silicon surface.
