Project description:Plasmons, which are collective charge oscillations, could provide a means of confining electromagnetic field to nanoscale structures. Recently, plasmonics using graphene have attracted interest, particularly because of the tunable plasmon dispersion, which will be useful for tunable frequency in cavity applications. However, the carrier density dependence of the dispersion is weak (proportional to n(1/4)) and it is difficult to tune the frequency over orders of magnitude. Here, by exploiting electronic excitation and detection, we carry out time-resolved measurements of a charge pulse travelling in a plasmon mode in graphene corresponding to the gigahertz range. We demonstrate that the plasmon velocity can be changed over two orders of magnitude by applying a magnetic field B and by screening the plasmon electric field with a gate metal; at high B, edge magnetoplasmons, which are plasmons localized at the sample edge, are formed and their velocity depends on B, n and the gate screening effect.

Project description:This paper reports the first known investigation of power dissipation and electrical breakdown in aerosol-jet-printed (AJP) graphene interconnects. The electrical performance of aerosol-jet printed (AJP) graphene was characterized using the Transmission Line Method (TLM). The electrical resistance decreased with increasing printing pass number (n); the lowest sheet resistance measured was 1.5 kΩ/sq. for n = 50. The role of thermal resistance (RTH) in power dissipation was studied using a combination of electrical breakdown thermometry and infrared (IR) imaging. A simple lumped thermal model ([Formula: see text]) and COMSOL Multiphysics was used to extract the total RTH, including interfaces. The RTH of AJP graphene on Kapton is ~27 times greater than that of AJP graphene on Al2O3 with a corresponding breakdown current density 10 times less on Kapton versus Al2O3.

Project description:Ground-state integer charge transfer is commonly regarded as the basic mechanism of molecular electrical doping in both, conjugated polymers and oligomers. Here, we demonstrate that fundamentally different processes can occur in the two types of organic semiconductors instead. Using complementary experimental techniques supported by theory, we contrast a polythiophene, where molecular p-doping leads to integer charge transfer reportedly localized to one quaterthiophene backbone segment, to the quaterthiophene oligomer itself. Despite a comparable relative increase in conductivity, we observe only partial charge transfer for the latter. In contrast to the parent polymer, pronounced intermolecular frontier-orbital hybridization of oligomer and dopant in 1:1 mixed-stack co-crystallites leads to the emergence of empty electronic states within the energy gap of the surrounding quaterthiophene matrix. It is their Fermi-Dirac occupation that yields mobile charge carriers and, therefore, the co-crystallites-rather than individual acceptor molecules-should be regarded as the dopants in such systems.

Project description:Understanding the influence of grain boundaries (GBs) on the electrical and thermal transport properties of graphene films is essentially important for electronic, optoelectronic and thermoelectric applications. Here we report a segregation-adsorption chemical vapour deposition method to grow well-stitched high-quality monolayer graphene films with a tunable uniform grain size from ∼200 nm to ∼1 μm, by using a Pt substrate with medium carbon solubility, which enables the determination of the scaling laws of thermal and electrical conductivities as a function of grain size. We found that the thermal conductivity of graphene films dramatically decreases with decreasing grain size by a small thermal boundary conductance of ∼3.8 × 109 W m-2 K-1, while the electrical conductivity slowly decreases with an extraordinarily small GB transport gap of ∼0.01 eV and resistivity of ∼0.3 kΩ μm. Moreover, the changes in both the thermal and electrical conductivities with grain size change are greater than those of typical semiconducting thermoelectric materials.

Project description:The unique density of states and exceptionally low electrical noise allow graphene-based field effect devices to be utilized as extremely sensitive potentiometers for probing charge transfer with adsorbed species. On the other hand, molecular level alignment at the interface with electrodes can strongly influence the performance of organic-based devices. For this reason, interfacial band engineering is crucial for potential applications of graphene/organic semiconductor heterostructures. Here, we demonstrate charge transfer between graphene and two molecular semiconductors, parahexaphenyl and buckminsterfullerene C60. Through in-situ measurements, we directly probe the charge transfer as the interfacial dipoles are formed. It is found that the adsorbed molecules do not affect electron scattering rates in graphene, indicating that charge transfer is the main mechanism governing the level alignment. From the amount of transferred charge and the molecular coverage of the grown films, the amount of charge transferred per adsorbed molecule is estimated, indicating very weak interaction.

Project description:N,N'-Diphenyl-N,N'-bis(1-naphthyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NPB) and 4,4',4''-tris (N-3-methylphenyl-N-phenylamine) triphenylamine (m-MTDATA) are widely used as hole transport materials in organic optoelectronic devices. In the present article, the hole transport properties of blends of NPB and m-MTDATA compared with the pristine materials are investigated using admittance spectroscopy and considering temperature dependent current-voltage characteristics and electroluminescent characteristics. It has been found that m-MTDATA dramatically lowers the carrier mobility in the NPB matrix to a large extent by enhancing the total density of traps and results in more dispersive transport. However, by introducing NPB into m-MTDATA the hole mobility is nearly unchanged in comparison with pristine m-MTDATA film. These differences are attributed to two different charge transport mechanisms, trapping and scattering. Obtained quantitative information regarding the charge transport parameters could help to extend optimization strategies for the fabrication of new organic optoelectronic devices by enabling the facile tailoring of the charge transport process.

Project description:Caged organic fluorophores are established tools for localization-based super-resolution imaging. Their use relies on reversible deactivation of standard organic fluorophores by chemical reduction or commercially available caged dyes with ON switching of the fluorescent signal by ultraviolet (UV) light. Here, we establish caging of cyanine fluorophores and caged rhodamine dyes, i.e., chemical deactivation of fluorescence, for single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) experiments with freely diffusing molecules. They allow temporal separation and sorting of multiple intramolecular donor-acceptor pairs during solution-based smFRET. We use this "caged FRET" methodology for the study of complex biochemical species such as multisubunit proteins or nucleic acids containing more than two fluorescent labels. Proof-of-principle experiments and a characterization of the uncaging process in the confocal volume are presented. These reveal that chemical caging and UV reactivation allow temporal uncoupling of convoluted fluorescence signals from, e.g., multiple spectrally similar donor or acceptor molecules on nucleic acids. We also use caging without UV reactivation to remove unwanted overlabeled species in experiments with the homotrimeric membrane transporter BetP. We finally outline further possible applications of the caged FRET methodology, such as the study of weak biochemical interactions, which are otherwise impossible with diffusion-based smFRET techniques because of the required low concentrations of fluorescently labeled biomolecules.

Project description:Tin and its compounds hold promise for the development of high-capacity anode materials that could replace graphitic carbon used in current lithium-ion batteries. However, the introduced porosity in current electrode designs to buffer the volume changes of active materials during cycling does not afford high volumetric performance. Here, we show a strategy leveraging a sulfur sacrificial agent for controlled utility of void space in a tin oxide/graphene composite anode. In a typical synthesis using the capillary drying of graphene hydrogels, sulfur is employed with hard tin oxide nanoparticles inside the contraction hydrogels. The resultant graphene-caged tin oxide delivers an ultrahigh volumetric capacity of 2123?mAh?cm-3 together with good cycling stability. Our results suggest not only a conversion-type composite anode that allows for good electrochemical characteristics, but also a general synthetic means to engineering the packing density of graphene nanosheets for high energy storage capabilities in small volumes.

Project description:The distribution of defects and dislocations in graphene layers has become a very important concern with regard to the electrical and electronic transport properties of device applications. Although several experiments have shown the influence of defects on the electrical properties of graphene, these studies were limited to measuring microscopic areas because of their long measurement times. Here, we successfully imaged various local defects in a large area of chemical vapor deposition graphene within a reasonable amount of time by using lock-in thermography (LIT). The differences in electrical resistance caused by the micrometer-scale defects, such as cracks and wrinkles, and atomic-scale domain boundaries were apparent as nonuniform Joule heating on polycrystalline and epitaxially grown graphene. The present results indicate that LIT can serve as a fast and effective method of evaluating the quality and uniformity of large graphene films for device applications.

Project description:We define a molecular caging complex as a pair of molecules in which one molecule (the "host" or "cage") possesses a cavity that can encapsulate the other molecule (the "guest") and prevent it from escaping. Molecular caging complexes can be useful in applications such as molecular shape sorting, drug delivery, and molecular immobilization in materials science, to name just a few. However, the design and computational discovery of new caging complexes is a challenging task, as it is hard to predict whether one molecule can encapsulate another because their shapes can be quite complex. In this paper, we propose a computational screening method that predicts whether a given pair of molecules form a caging complex. Our method is based on a caging verification algorithm that was designed by our group for applications in robotic manipulation. We tested our algorithm on three pairs of molecules that were previously described in a pioneering work on molecular caging complexes and found that our results are fully consistent with the previously reported ones. Furthermore, we performed a screening experiment on a data set consisting of 46 hosts and four guests and used our algorithm to predict which pairs are likely to form caging complexes. Our method is computationally efficient and can be integrated into a screening pipeline to complement experimental techniques.
