A Manganese Nanosheet: New Cluster Topology and Catalysis.

ABSTRACT: While the coordination chemistry of monometallic complexes and the surface characteristics of larger metal particles are well understood, preparations of molecular metallic nanoclusters remain a great challenge. Discrete planar metal clusters constitute nanoscale snapshots of cluster growth but are especially rare owing to the strong preference for three-dimensional structures and rapid aggregation or decomposition. A simple ligand-exchange procedure has led to the formation of a novel heteroleptic Mn₆ nanocluster that crystallized in an unprecedented flat-chair topology and exhibited unique magnetic and catalytic properties. Magnetic susceptibility studies documented strong electronic communication between the manganese ions. Reductive activation of the molecular Mn₆ cluster enabled catalytic hydrogenations of alkenes, alkynes, and imines.

Six-coordinate manganese(3+) in catalysis by yeast manganese superoxide dismutase.

Project description:Reduction of superoxide (O2-) by manganese-containing superoxide dismutase occurs through either a "prompt protonation" pathway, or an "inner-sphere" pathway, with the latter leading to formation of an observable Mn-peroxo complex. We recently reported that wild-type (WT) manganese superoxide dismutases (MnSODs) from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans are more gated toward the "prompt protonation" pathway than human and bacterial MnSODs and suggested that this could result from small structural changes in the second coordination sphere of manganese. We report here that substitution of a second-sphere residue, Tyr34, by phenylalanine (Y34F) causes the MnSOD from S. cerevisiae to react exclusively through the "inner-sphere" pathway. At neutral pH, we have a surprising observation that protonation of the Mn-peroxo complex in the mutant yeast enzyme occurs through a fast pathway, leading to a putative six-coordinate Mn(3+) species, which actively oxidizes O2- in the catalytic cycle. Upon increasing pH, the fast pathway is gradually replaced by a slow proton-transfer pathway, leading to the well-characterized five-coordinate Mn(3+). We here propose and compare two hypothetical mechanisms for the mutant yeast enzyme, differing in the structure of the Mn-peroxo complex yet both involving formation of the active six-coordinate Mn(3+) and proton transfer from a second-sphere water molecule, which has substituted for the -OH of Tyr34, to the Mn-peroxo complex. Because WT and the mutant yeast MnSOD both rest in the 2+ state and become six-coordinate when oxidized up from Mn(2+), six-coordinate Mn(3+) species could also actively function in the mechanism of WT yeast MnSODs.

Manganese deception on graphene and implications in catalysis.

Project description:Heteroatom-doped metal-free graphene has been widely studied as the catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Depending on the preparation method and the dopants, the ORR activity varies ranging from a two-electron to a four-electron pathway. The different literature reports are difficult to correlate due to the large variances. However, due to the potential metal contamination, the origin of the ORR activity from "metal-free" graphene remains confusing and inconclusive. Here we decipher the ORR catalytic activities of diverse architectures on graphene derived from reduced graphene oxide. High angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption near edge structure, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and trace elemental analysis methods are employed. The mechanistic origin of ORR activity is associated with the trace manganese content and reaches its highest performance at an onset potential of 0.94 V when manganese exists as a mononuclear-centered structure within defective graphene. This study exposes the deceptive role of trace metal in formerly thought to be metal-free graphene materials. It also provides insight into the design of better-performing catalyst for ORR by underscoring the coordination chemistry possible for future single-atom catalyst materials.

A New Class of Scandium Carbide Nanosheet.

Project description:A new class of two-dimensional scandium carbide nanosheet has been identified by using first-principles density functional theory. It has a primitive cell of Sc3C10, in which there are two pentagonal carbon rings surrounded by one scandium octagon. Being as the precussor of Volleyballene Sc20C60 and ScC nanotubes, the Sc3C10 nanosheet is exceptionally stable. By rolling up this Sc3C10 sheet, a series of stable ScC nanotubes have been obtained. All the nanotubes studied have been found to be metallic. Furthermore, the hydrogen storage capacity of the ScC nanotubes has been explored. The calculated results show that one unit of the (0,3) ScC nanotube can adsorb a maximum of 51 hydrogen molecules, reaching up to a 6.25?wt% hydrogen gravimetric density with an average binding energy of 0.23?eV/H2.

Manganese(ii) phosphate nanosheet assembly with native out-of-plane Mn centres for electrocatalytic water oxidation.

Project description:Nature selects Mn-clusters as catalysts for water oxidation, which is a significant reaction in photosynthesis. Thus, it is of critical importance to develop Mn-based superstructures and study their catalytic details for water-splitting-based renewable energy research. Herein, we report a manganese(ii) phosphate nanosheet assembly with asymmetric out-of-plane Mn centers from the transformation of amine-intercalated nanoplates for efficient electrocatalytic water oxidation in neutral aqueous solutions. From structural and computational studies, it is found that the native out-of-plane Mn centers with terminal water ligands are accessible and preferential oxidation sites to form active intermediates for water oxidation. In addition, the asymmetry can stabilize the key MnIII intermediate, as demonstrated by electrochemical and spectrometric studies. This study delivers a convenient strategy to prepare unique nanosheet assemblies for electrocatalysis and fundamental understandings of oxygen evolution chemistry.

Giant Spherical Cluster with I-C140 Fullerene Topology.

Project description:We report on an effective cluster expansion of CuBr-linked aggregates by the increase of the steric bulk of the Cp(R) ligand in the pentatopic molecules [Cp(R)Fe(?(5)-P5)]. Using [Cp(BIG)Fe(?(5)-P5)] (Cp(BIG)=C5(4-nBuC6H4)5), the novel multishell aggregate [{Cp(BIG)Fe(?(5:2:1:1:1:1:1)-P5)}12(CuBr)92] is obtained. It shows topological analogy to the theoretically predicted I-C140 fullerene molecule. The spherical cluster was comprehensively characterized by various methods in solution and in the solid state.

Topology-Based Machine Learning Strategy for Cluster Structure Prediction.

Project description:In cluster physics, the determination of the ground-state structure of medium-sized and large-sized clusters is a challenge due to the number of local minimal values on the potential energy surface growing exponentially with cluster size. Although machine learning approaches have had much success in materials sciences, their applications in clusters are often hindered by the geometric complexity clusters. Persistent homology provides a new topological strategy to simplify geometric complexity while retaining important chemical and physical information without having to "downgrade" the original data. We further propose persistent pairwise independence (PPI) to enhance the predictive power of persistent homology. We construct topology-based machine learning models to reveal hidden structure-energy relationships in lithium (Li) clusters. We integrate the topology-based machine learning models, a particle swarm optimization algorithm, and density functional theory calculations to accelerate the search of the globally stable structure of clusters.

New Magic Au<sub>24</sub> Cluster Stabilized by PVP: Selective Formation, Atomic Structure, and Oxidation Catalysis.

Project description:An unprecedented magic number cluster, Au24Cl x (x = 0-3), was selectively synthesized by the kinetically controlled reduction of the Au precursor ions in a microfluidic mixer in the presence of a large excess of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP). The atomic structure of the PVP-stabilized Au24Cl x was investigated by means of aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (ACTEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. ACTEM video imaging revealed that the Au24Cl x clusters were stable against dissociation but fluctuated during the observation period. Some of the high-resolution ACTEM snapshots were explained by DFT-optimized isomeric structures in which all the constituent atoms were located on the surface. This observation suggests that the featureless optical spectrum of Au24Cl x is associated with the coexistence of distinctive isomers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy of CO adsorbates revealed the electron-rich nature of Au24Cl x clusters due to the interaction with PVP. The Au24Cl x :PVP clusters catalyzed the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol derivatives without degradation. Hammett analysis and the kinetic isotope effect indicated that the hydride elimination by Au24Cl x was the rate-limiting step with an apparent activation energy of 56 ± 3 kJ/mol, whereas the oxygen pressure dependence of the reaction kinetics suggested the involvement of hydrogen abstraction by coadsorbed O2 as a faster process.

Contribution of human manganese superoxide dismutase tyrosine 34 to structure and catalysis.

Project description:Superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes are critical in controlling levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are linked to aging, cancer, and neurodegenerative disease. Superoxide (O(2)(*-)) produced during respiration is removed by the product of the SOD2 gene, the homotetrameric manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD). Here, we examine the structural and catalytic roles of the highly conserved active-site residue Tyr34, based upon structure-function studies of MnSOD enzymes with mutations at this site. Substitution of Tyr34 with five different amino acids retained the active-site protein structure and assembly but caused a substantial decrease in the catalytic rate constant for the reduction of superoxide. The rate constant for formation of the product inhibition complex also decreases but to a much lesser extent, resulting in a net increase in the level of product inhibited form of the mutant enzymes. Comparisons of crystal structures and catalytic rates also suggest that one mutation, Y34V, interrupts the hydrogen-bonded network, which is associated with a rapid dissociation of the product-inhibited complex. Notably, with three of the Tyr34 mutants, we also observe an intermediate in catalysis, which has not been reported previously. Thus, these mutants establish a means of trapping a catalytic intermediate that promises to help elucidate the mechanism of catalysis.

Aromatic C-H addition of ketones to imines enabled by manganese catalysis.

Project description:Selectivity control of varied C-H bonds in a complex molecule is a long-standing goal and still a great challenge in C-H activation field. Most often, such selectivity is achieved by the innate reactivity of different C-H bonds. In this context, the classic Mannich reaction of acetophenone derivatives and imines is ascribed to the more reactive C(sp3)-H bonds α to the carbonyl, with the much less reactive aromatic C(sp2)-H bonds remaining intact. Herein we report an aromatic C(sp2)-H addition of ketones to imines enabled by manganese catalysis, which totally reverses the innate reactivity of C-H bonds α to the carbonyl and those on the aromatic ring. Diverse products of ortho-C-H aminoalkylated ketones, cyclized exo-olefinic isoindolines, and three-component methylated isoindolines can be successfully accessed under mild reaction conditions, which significantly expands the synthetic utilities of ketones as simple bulk chemicals.

MRI/Fluorescence bimodal amplification system for cellular GSH detection and tumor cell imaging based on manganese dioxide nanosheet.

Project description:Here, we report a novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/fluorescence bimodal amplification platform for the detection of glutathione (GSH) on the basis of redoxable manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanosheets, which can be readily applied as a DNA nanocarrier, fluorescence quencher, and intracellular GSH-activated MRI contrast agent. The binding of aptamers that absorbed on the MnO2 nanosheets to their target can facilitating the endocytosis of target-nanoprobes. Once endocytosed, the MnO2 nanosheets can react with cellular GSH, resulting in the disintegration of nanosheets to generate plenty of Mn2+ ions for MRI and releases the primers which were adsorbed on the MnO2 nanosheets. Then the rolling circle amplification (RCA) reaction was initiated to amplify the fluorescence signal. In addition, after treatment with GSH, the MnO2 nanosheets were reduced and then most of the fluorescence was recovered. Therefore, this MnO2 nanoprobe exhibits excellent selectivity, suggesting a potential detection platform for analyzing the glutathione level in cells.
