Light storage for one second in room-temperature alkali vapor.

ABSTRACT: Light storage, the controlled and reversible mapping of photons onto long-lived states of matter, enables memory capability in optical quantum networks. Prominent storage media are warm alkali vapors due to their strong optical coupling and long-lived spin states. In a dense gas, the random atomic collisions dominate the lifetime of the spin coherence, limiting the storage time to a few milliseconds. Here we present and experimentally demonstrate a storage scheme that is insensitive to spin-exchange collisions, thus enabling long storage times at high atomic densities. This unique property is achieved by mapping the light field onto spin orientation within a decoherence-free subspace of spin states. We report on a record storage time of 1 s in room-temperature cesium vapor, a 100-fold improvement over existing storage schemes. Furthermore, our scheme lays the foundations for hour-long quantum memories using rare-gas nuclear spins.

Ultrafast room-temperature crystallization of TiO2 nanotubes exploiting water-vapor treatment.

Project description:In this manuscript a near-room temperature crystallization process of anodic nanotubes from amorphous TiO2 to anatase phase with a fast 30 minutes treatment is reported for the first time. This method involves the exposure of as-grown TiO2 nanotubes to water vapor flow in ambient atmosphere. The water vapor-crystallized samples are deeply investigated in order to gain a whole understanding of their structural, physical and chemical properties. The photocatalytic activity of the converted material is tested by dye degradation experiment and the obtained performance confirms the highly promising properties of this low-temperature processed material.

Room temperature synthesis of covalent-organic framework films through vapor-assisted conversion.

Project description:We describe the facile synthesis of several two-dimensional covalent-organic frameworks (2D COFs) as films by vapor-assisted conversion at room temperature. High-quality films of benzodithiophene-containing BDT-COF and COF-5 with tunable thickness were synthesized under different conditions on various substrates. BDT-COF films of several micrometer thickness exhibit mesoporosity as well as textural porosity, whereas thinner BDT-COF films materialize as a cohesive dense layer. In addition, we studied the formation of COF-5 films with different solvent mixture compositions serving as vapor source. Room temperature vapor-assisted conversion is an excellent method to form COF films of fragile precursors and on sensitive substrates.

Room-temperature photonic logical qubits via second-order nonlinearities.

Project description:Recent progress in nonlinear optical materials and microresonators has brought quantum computing with bulk optical nonlinearities into the realm of possibility. This platform is of great interest, not only because photonics is an obvious choice for quantum networks, but also as a promising route to quantum information processing at room temperature. We propose an approach for reprogrammable room-temperature photonic quantum logic that significantly simplifies the realization of various quantum circuits, and in particular, of error correction. The key element is the programmable photonic multi-mode resonator that implements reprogrammable bosonic quantum logic gates, while using only the bulk χ(2) nonlinear susceptibility. We theoretically demonstrate that just two of these elements suffice for a complete, compact error-correction circuit on a bosonic code, without the need for measurement or feed-forward control. Encoding and logical operations on the code are also easily achieved with these reprogrammable quantum photonic processors. An extrapolation of current progress in nonlinear optical materials and photonic circuits indicates that such circuitry should be achievable within the next decade.

Visible-Light-Excited Room Temperature Phosphorescent Carbon Dots.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) with a room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) feature have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their fundamental importance and promising applications. However, the reported matrix-free RTP CDs only show short-wavelength (green to yellow) emissions and have to be triggered by ultraviolet (UV) light (below 400 nm), limiting their applications in certain fields. Herein, visible-light-excited matrix-free RTP CDs (named AA-CDs) with a long-wavelength (orange) emission are reported for the first time. The AA-CDs can be facilely prepared via a microwave heating treatment of L-aspartic acid (AA) in the presence of ammonia and they emit unique orange RTP in the solid state with visible light (420 nm) excitation just being switched off. Through the studies of the carbonization process, the C=O and C=N containing moieties in the AA-CDs are confirmed to be responsible for the observed RTP emission. Finally, the applications of AA-CDs in information encryption and anti-counterfeiting were preliminarily demonstrated.

Tuning ferromagnetism at room temperature by visible light.

Project description:Most digital information today is encoded in the magnetization of ferromagnetic domains. The demand for ever-increasing storage space fuels continuous research for energy-efficient manipulation of magnetism at smaller and smaller length scales. Writing a bit is usually achieved by rotating the magnetization of domains of the magnetic medium, which relies on effective magnetic fields. An alternative approach is to change the magnetic state directly by acting on the interaction between magnetic moments. Correlated oxides are ideal materials for this because the effects of a small external control parameter are amplified by the electronic correlations. Here, we present a radical method for reversible, light-induced tuning of ferromagnetism at room temperature using a halide perovskite/oxide perovskite heterostructure. We demonstrate that photoinduced charge carriers from the [Formula: see text] photovoltaic perovskite efficiently dope the thin [Formula: see text] film and decrease the magnetization of the ferromagnetic state, allowing rapid rewriting of the magnetic bit. This manipulation could be accomplished at room temperature; hence this opens avenues for magnetooptical memory devices.

Performance evaluation of CuBTC composites for room temperature oxygen storage.

Project description:Oxygen is commonly separated from air using cryogenic liquefaction. The inherent energy penalties of phase change inspire the search for energy-efficient separation processes. Here, an alternative approach is presented, where we determine whether it is possible to utilise simpler, stable materials in the right process to achieve overall energy efficiency. Adsorption and release by Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are an attractive alternative due to their high adsorption and storage capacity at ambient conditions. Cu-BTC/MgFe2O4 composites were prepared, and magnetic induction swing adsorption (MISA) used to release adsorbed oxygen quickly and efficiently. The 3 wt% MgFe2O4 composites exhibited an oxygen uptake capacity of 0.34 mmol g-1 at 298 K and when exposed to a magnetic field of 31 mT, attained a temperature rise of 86 °C and released 100% of adsorbed oxygen. This water vapor stable pelletized system, can be filled and emptied within 10 minutes requiring around 5.6 MJ kg-1 of energy.

An efficient method for long-term room temperature storage of RNA.

Project description:RNA is a tool used in many fields, from molecular and cellular biology to medicine and nanotechnology. For most of these uses, the integrity of RNA is required and must be maintained during storage. Even though freezing is currently the storage method of choice, the increasing number of samples to be stored and the costly use of a cold chain have highlighted the need for room temperature preservation methods. Here, we report a new room temperature technology that consists in drying RNA samples in the presence of a stabilizer in stainless steel minicapsules. These air- and water-tight capsules isolate RNA from the atmosphere and maintain an anhydrous and anoxic environment. Through the evaluation of RNA integrity over time at room temperature or 90 °C, we identified atmospheric humidity as a major deleterious factor. The degradation rate dependence in temperature fitted an Arrhenius model, with an activation energy of 28.5 kcal/mol and an extrapolated room temperature degradation rate of 3.2 10(-13)/nt/s (95% confidence interval: 2.3-4.2/nt/s). In these conditions, it is expected that an RNA molecule will be subjected to 0.7-1.3 cut every 1000 nucleotides per century. In addition, we showed that stored RNA is compatible for further analyses, such as reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. No significant change in the Cq values was observed over a simulated period of several decades. At last, our data are consistent with a sequence-independent degradation rate of RNA in the solid state.

Improving the alkali metal electrode/inorganic solid electrolyte contact via room-temperature ultrasound solid welding.

Project description:The combination of alkali metal electrodes and solid-state electrolytes is considered a promising strategy to develop high-energy rechargeable batteries. However, the practical applications of these two components are hindered by the large interfacial resistance and growth of detrimental alkali metal depositions (e.g., dendrites) during cycling originated by the unsatisfactory electrode/solid electrolyte contact. To tackle these issues, we propose a room temperature ultrasound solid welding strategy to improve the contact between Na metal and Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) inorganic solid electrolyte. Symmetrical Na|NZSP | Na cells assembled via ultrasonic welding show stable Na plating/stripping behavior at a current density of 0.2 mA cm-2 and a higher critical current density (i.e., 0.6 mA cm-2) and lower interfacial impedance than the symmetric cells assembled without the ultrasonic welding strategy. The beneficial effect of the ultrasound welding is also demonstrated in Na|NZSP | Na3V2(PO4)3 full coin cell configuration where 900 cycles at 0.1 mA cm-2 with a capacity retention of almost 90% can be achieved at room temperature.

Assessing the tolerance to room temperature and viability of freeze-dried mice spermatozoa over long-term storage at room temperature under vacuum.

Project description:Freeze-drying has been frequently used to preserve food and microorganisms at room temperature (RT) for extended periods of time; however, its application to mammalian species is difficult. Here, we developed a method to prolong the stability of freeze-dried (FD) mice spermatozoa at RT for more than one year without using any cryoprotectant agents. Our data showed that maintaining a vacuum in ampoules is critical to ensuring the viability of FD spermatozoa, as the stability of spermatozoa DNA increased when imperfectly vacuumed ampoules were detected using a non-destructive test and eliminated. Finally a large number of healthy offspring were obtained from mice oocytes fertilized with FD spermatozoa stored at RT for more than one year. Although the birth rate from three-month stored spermatozoa was lower than that from one-day stored spermatozoa, no further reduction was observed even in one-year stored spermatozoa. Therefore, FD spermatozoa preserved in this study were highly tolerant to warm temperatures. This method of storage shows a great potential for the preservation of genetic resources of mammalian species, such as genetically-modified mouse strains, without the use of electric power.

Near room temperature chemical vapor deposition of graphene with diluted methane and molten gallium catalyst.

Project description:Direct growth of graphene integrated into electronic devices is highly desirable but difficult due to the nominal ~1000 °C chemical vapor deposition (CVD) temperature, which can seriously deteriorate the substrates. Here we report a great reduction of graphene CVD temperature, down to 50 °C on sapphire and 100 °C on polycarbonate, by using dilute methane as the source and molten gallium (Ga) as catalysts. The very low temperature graphene synthesis is made possible by carbon attachment to the island edges of pre-existing graphene nuclei islands, and causes no damages to the substrates. A key benefit of using molten Ga catalyst is the enhanced methane absorption in Ga at lower temperatures; this leads to a surprisingly low apparent reaction barrier of ~0.16 eV below 300 °C. The faster growth kinetics due to a low reaction barrier and a demonstrated low-temperature graphene nuclei transfer protocol can facilitate practical direct graphene synthesis on many kinds of substrates down to 50-100 °C. Our results represent a significant progress in reducing graphene synthesis temperature and understanding its mechanism.
