Effect of Drought on Agronomic Traits of Rice and Wheat: A Meta-Analysis.

ABSTRACT: Drought has been one of the most important limiting factors for crop production, which deleteriously affects food security worldwide. The main objective of the present study was to quantitatively assess the effect of drought on the agronomic traits (e.g., plant height, biomass, yield, and yield components) of rice and wheat in combination with several moderators (e.g., drought stress intensity, rooting environment, and growth stage) using a meta-analysis study. The database was created from 55 published studies on rice and 60 published studies on wheat. The results demonstrated that drought decreased the agronomic traits differently between rice and wheat among varying growth stages. Wheat and rice yields decreased by 27.5% and 25.4%, respectively. Wheat grown in pots showed greater decreases in agronomic traits than those grown in the field. Rice showed opposite growing patterns when compared to wheat in rooting environments. The effect of drought on rice increased with plant growth and drought had larger detrimental influences during the reproductive phase (e.g., blooming stage, filling stage, and maturity). However, an exception was found in wheat, which had similar decreased performance during the complete growth cycle. Based on these results, future droughts could produce lower yields of rice and wheat when compared to the current drought.

Project description:Drought is one of the main environmental factors affecting crop growth, and breeding drought-tolerant cultivars is one of the most economic and effective ways of increasing yields and ensuring sustainable agricultural production under drought stress. To facilitate the breeding of drought-tolerant wheat, this study was conducted to evaluate genotypic differences in the drought tolerance of 334 wheat genotypes collected from China and Australia with the aim of screening for drought-tolerant and -sensitive genotypes and to elucidate the corresponding physiological mechanisms. A hydroponic-air experiment (roots exposed to air for 7 h/d and continued for 6 d) showed significant genotypic differences in shoot and root dry weights among the genotypes. The relative shoot and root dry weights, expressed as the percentage of the control, showed a normal distribution, with variation ranges of 20.2-79.7% and 32.8-135.2%, respectively. The coefficients of variation were in the range of 18.2-22.7%, and the diversity index was between 5.71 and 5.73, indicating a rich genetic diversity among the wheat genotypes for drought tolerance. Using phenotypic differences in relative dry weights in responses to drought stress, 20 of each of the most drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive genotypes were selected; these were further evaluated in pot experiments (watering withheld until the soil moisture content reached four percent). The results showed that the trends in drought tolerance were consistent with the hydroponic-air experiment, with genotypes W147 and W235 being the most drought-tolerant and W201 and W282 the most sensitive. Significant genotypic differences in water use efficiency in response to drought were observed in the pot experiment, with the drought-tolerant genotypes being markedly higher and the two sensitive genotypes being no different from the control. A marked increase in bound water content in the drought stress plants was observed in the two drought-tolerant genotypes, while a decrease occurred in the free water. The reductions in photochemical efficiencies of PSII, transpiration rates, net photosynthesis rates, chlorophyll contents and stomatal conduction in the drought-sensitive genotypes W201 and W282 under drought stress were higher than the two tolerant genotypes. This study provides a theoretical guide and germplasm for the further genetic improvement of drought tolerance in wheat.

Project description:Rice is an important grain that is the staple food for most of the world's population. Drought is one of the major stresses that negatively affects rice yield. The nature of drought tolerance in rice is complex as it is determined by various components and has low heritability. Therefore, to ensure success in breeding programs for drought tolerant rice, QTLs (quantitative trait loci) of interest must be stable in a variety of plant genotypes and environments. This study identified stable QTLs in rice chromosomes in a variety of backgrounds and environments and conducted a meta-QTL analysis of stable QTLs that have been reported by previous research for use in breeding programs. A total of 653 QTLs for drought tolerance in rice from 27 genetic maps were recorded for analysis. The QTLs recorded were related to 13 traits in rice that respond to drought. Through the use of BioMercartor V4.2, a consensus map containing QTLs and molecular markers were generated using 27 genetic maps that were extracted from the previous 20 studies and meta-QTL analysis was conducted on the consensus map. A total of 70 MQTLs were identified and a total of 453 QTLs were mapped into the meta-QTL areas. Five meta-QTLs from chromosome 1 (MQTL 1.5 and MQTL 1.6), chromosome 2 (MQTL2.1 and MQTL 2.2) and chromosome 3 (MQTL 3.1) were selected for functional annotation as these regions have high number of QTLs and include many traits in rice that respond to drought. A number of genes in MQTL1.5 (268 genes), MQTL1.6 (640 genes), MQTL 2.1 (319 genes), MQTL 2.2 (19 genes) and MQTL 3.1 (787 genes) were annotated through Blast2GO. Few major proteins that respond to drought stress were identified in the meta-QTL areas which are Abscisic Acid-Insensitive Protein 5 (ABI5), the G-box binding factor 4 (GBF4), protein kinase PINOID (PID), histidine kinase 2 (AHK2), protein related to autophagy 18A (ATG18A), mitochondrial transcription termination factor (MTERF), aquaporin PIP 1-2, protein detoxification 48 (DTX48) and inositol-tetrakisphosphate 1-kinase 2 (ITPK2). These proteins are regulatory proteins involved in the regulation of signal transduction and gene expression that respond to drought stress. The meta-QTLs derived from this study and the genes that have been identified can be used effectively in molecular breeding and in genetic engineering for drought resistance/tolerance in rice.
