<i>Euglena sanguinea</i> Ehrenberg is the only known species of euglenids which forms toxic blooms causing tangible losses to fish farms. <i>Euglena sanguinea</i> produces euglenophycin, a toxin similar in structure to solenopsin, an alkaloid found in fire ant venom.
