ABSTRACT: In this data article, the chemical data of hollow carbon spheres and polyaniline (HCS@PANI) nanocomposite are presented for the research article entitled "Novel electrochemical biosensor based on core-shell nanostructured composite of hollow carbon spheres and polyaniline for sensitively detecting malathion" (He et al., 2018) [1]. The data includes chemical structure and components obtained by Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms.

Building carbon structures inside hollow carbon spheres.

Project description:The synthesis and characterization of helical carbon nanofibers (CNFs) contained within a fully confined nanoreactor is described. In particular, hollow carbon spheres (od = ca. 310 nm; wall thickness ca. 20 nm) were infiltrated with Cu ions (1%) to produce CuO particles (<10 nm) and the CuO was converted to Cu particles at temperature of 300 °C. Acetylene was then used as a carbon source to grow helical CNFs within the hollow carbon spheres. The diameter and helicity of the CNFs was influenced by the Cu content within a hollow carbon sphere, the limited Cu sintering inside a sphere as well as the dimensions of the sphere. The procedures employed suggest that the philosophy of building other structures (and molecules) with any elements within confined nanoreactors is possible.

Encapsulating Pd nanoparticles in double-shelled graphene@carbon hollow spheres for excellent chemical catalytic property.

Project description:Double-shelled hollow carbon spheres with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as inner shell and carbon (C) layer as outer shell have been successfully designed and prepared. This tailor-making structure acts as an excellent capsule for encapsulating with ultrafine Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs), which could effectively prevent Pd NPs from aggregation and leaching. As a result, the as-obtained RGO@Pd@C nanohybid exhibits superior and stable catalytic performance. With the aid of RGO@Pd@C, the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol with NaBH4 as reducing agent can be finished within only 30 s, even the content of Pd is as low as 0.28 wt%. As far as we know, RGO@Pd@C is one of the most effective catalyst for 4-NP reducing reaction up to now.

Direct Synthesis of Multicolor Fluorescent Hollow Carbon Spheres Encapsulating Enriched Carbon Dots.

Project description:Multicolor fluorescent hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) are fabricated by an easy one-step route of in situ pyrolysis process with the use of natural scales and collagen powders as the precursor. The gas blow forming mechanism and photoluminescence (PL) emission mechanism of HCSs have been thoroughly discussed and proved that HCSs represent the first examples of three-dimensional multicolor fluorescent nanomaterials based on carbon dots (CDs). The HCSs encapsulate enriched carbon dots with high quantum yields (QYs) of 38%, and thus are applied in inkjet printing and sensitized solar cells. This strategy offers a promising avenue for preparing multicolor fluorescent hollow carbon materials on an industrial scale.

Room-temperature Magnetism in Carbon Dots and Enhanced Ferromagnetism in Carbon Dots-Polyaniline Nanocomposite.

Project description:Room temperature magnetic ordering is reported for very small carbon dots (CDs), mat-like polyaniline nanofibers (Mat-PANI) and a composite of CDs@Mat-PANI containing 0.315?wt% CDs. We have found saturation magnetization (M S ) of CDs, Mat-PANI and CDs@Mat-PANI at 5 (20/300) K equals to 0.0079 (0.0048/0.0019), 0.0116 (0.0065/0.0055) and 0.0349 (0.0085/0.0077) emu/g, respectively. The M S enhancement in CDs@Mat-PANI (200% and 40% at 5?K and 300?K, respectively) is attributed to electron transfer from Mat-PANI imine N-atoms to the encapsulated CDs. Changes in M S values reveal that 0.81 (0.08) electron/CD is transferred at 5 (300) K, which is supported by observation of CDs photoluminescence (PL) redshift while in CDs@Mat-PANI. Band-bending and bandgap-renormalization calculations are used to predict a redshift of 117?meV at 300?K as a result of the electron transfer, in excellent agreement with the PL data (110?meV). Raman, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data are used to confirm the electron transfer process as well as the strong interaction of CDs with PANI within CDs@Mat-PANI, which increases the crystalline domain size of Mat-PANI from about 4.8?nm to 9.2?nm while reducing the tensile strain from about 6.2% to 1.8%.

Chemo-photothermal effects of doxorubicin/silica-carbon hollow spheres on liver cancer.

Project description:Chemo-photothermal therapy, which exhibits synergistic effects, is more effective than either of the treatments administered alone because of its superior ability to target and destroy cancer cells. An anti-cancer compound (doxorubicin, DOX) was embedded in silica-carbon hollow spheres (SCHSs) using heat and vacuum to integrate multi-therapeutic effects onto one platform and subsequently improve the anti-cancer efficacy. SCHSs were synthesized via a surface activation method and its highly porous surface enhanced the loading content of the desired drug. SCHSs are an infrared photothermal material that can destroy targeted cells by heating under near-infrared (NIR) laser illumination at 808 nm. NIR laser illumination also enhances DOX release from SCHSs to increase the anti-cancer efficiency of DOX-loaded SCHSs (DOX-SCHSs) in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional multicellular tumor spheroid cultures. SCHSs exhibited high heat-generating ability and pH-responsive drug delivery. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that DOX-SCHSs represent a potential tool for chemo-photothermal therapy due to its photothermal effects. Thus, our findings imply that the high cancer cell killing efficiency of DOX-SCHSs induced by NIR illumination can be used for the treatment of tumors.

Nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres with tunable shell thickness for high-performance supercapacitors.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres (NHCSs) are well prepared by using Cu2O microspheres as a hard template and 3-aminophenol formaldehyde resin polymer as carbon and nitrogen precursors. The thickness of the carbon shell can be easily controlled in the range of 15-84 nm by simply adjusting the weight ratios of the precursors to Cu2O microspheres, and the Cu2O templates can also be further reused. Physicochemical characterization demonstrates that the obtained NHCSs possess a well-developed hollow spherical structure, thin carbon shell and high nitrogen doping content. Due to these characteristics, when further utilized as electrodes for supercapacitors, the NHCSs with the carbon shell thickness of 15 nm show a high capacitance of 263.6 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, an outstanding rate performance of 122 F g-1 at 20 A g-1 and an excellent long-term cycling stability with only 9.8% loss after 1000 cycles at 5 A g-1 in 6 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. This finding may push forward the development of carbon materials, exhibiting huge potential for electrochemical energy storage applications.

Mesoporous hollow carbon spheres for lithium-sulfur batteries: distribution of sulfur and electrochemical performance.

Project description:Hollow carbon spheres (HCS) with a nanoporous shell are promising for the use in lithium-sulfur batteries because of the large internal void offering space for sulfur and polysulfide storage and confinement. However, there is an ongoing discussion whether the cavity is accessible for sulfur. Yet no valid proof of cavity filling has been presented, mostly due to application of unsuitable high-vacuum methods for the analysis of sulfur distribution. Here we describe the distribution of sulfur in hollow carbon spheres by powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy along with results from scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen physisorption. The results of these methods lead to the conclusion that the cavity is not accessible for sulfur infiltration. Nevertheless, HCS/sulfur composite cathodes with areal sulfur loadings of 2.0 mg·cm-2 were investigated electrochemically, showing stable cycling performance with specific capacities of about 500 mAh·g-1 based on the mass of sulfur over 500 cycles.

Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol Using Cobalt Oxide Supported Inside and Outside Hollow Carbon Spheres.

Project description:Cobalt oxide nanoparticles (6 nm) supported both inside and outside of hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) were synthesized by using two different polymer templates. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol was used as a model reaction to evaluate the catalysts. PXRD studies indicated that the Co oxidation state varied for the different catalysts due to reduction of the Co by the carbon, and a metal oxidation step prior to the benzyl alcohol oxidation enhanced the catalytic activity. The metal loading influenced the catalytic efficiency, and the activity decreased with increasing metal loading, possibly due to pore filling effects. The catalysts showed similar activity and selectivity (to benzaldehyde) whether placed inside or outside the HCS (63 % selectivity at 50 % conversion). No poisoning was observed due to product build up in the HCS.

Hollow Mesoporous Carbon Spheres for High Performance Symmetrical and Aqueous Zinc-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitor.

Project description:Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors are a promising energy storage device as they simultaneously combine the high capacity of batteries and the high power of supercapacitors. However, the practical application of Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors is hindered by insufficient energy density and poor rate performance. In this study, a symmetrical zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor device was constructed with hollow mesoporous-carbon nanospheres as electrode materials, and aqueous ZnSO4 adopted as an electrolyte. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and high specific area (800 m2/g) of the hollow carbon nanospheres, fast capacitor-type ion adsorption/de-adsorption on both the cathode and the anode can be achieved, as well as additional battery-type Zn/Zn2+ electroplating/stripping on the anode. This device thus demonstrates outstanding electrochemical performance, with high capacity (212.1 F/g at 0.2 A/g), a high energy density (75.4 Wh/kg at 0.16 kW/kg), a good rate performance (34.2 Wh/kg energy density maintained at a high power density of 16.0 kW/kg) and excellent cycling stability with 99.4% capacitance retention after 2,500 cycles at 2 A/g. The engineering of this new configuration provides an extremely safe, high-rate, and durable energy-storage device.

Carbon confined GeO<sub>2</sub> hollow spheres for stable rechargeable Na ion batteries.

Project description:Germanium (Ge) based nanomaterials are regarded as promising high-capacity anode materials for Na ion batteries, but suffer fast capacity fading problems caused by the alloying/de-alloying reactions of Na-Ge. Herein, we report a new method for preparing highly dispersed GeO2 by using molecular-level ionic liquids (ILs) as carbon sources. In the obtained GeO2@C composite material, GeO2 exhibits hollow spherical morphology and is uniformly distributed in the carbon matrix. The as-prepared GeO2@C exhibits improved Na ion storage performances including high reversible capacity (577 mA h g-1 at 0.1C), rate property (270 mA h g-1 at 3C), and high capacity retention (82.3% after 500 cycles). The improved electrochemical performance could be attributed to the unique nanostructure of GeO2@C, the synergistic effect between GeO2 hollow spheres and the carbon matrix ensures the anode material effectively alleviates the volume expansion and the particle agglomeration problems.
