Dataset of surface plasmon resonance based on photonic crystal fiber for chemical sensing applications.

ABSTRACT: In this research work a perfectly circular lattice Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) based surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) based sensor has been proposed. The investigation process has been successfully carried out using finite element method (FEM) based commercial available software package COMSOL Multiphysics version 4.2. The whole investigation module covers the wider optical spectrum ranging from 0.48 µm to 1.10 µm. Using the wavelength interrogation method the proposed model exposed maximum sensitivity of 9000 nm/RIU(Refractive Index Unit) and using the amplitude interrogation method it obtained maximum sensitivity of 318 RIU-1. Moreover the maximum sensor resolution of 1.11×10-5 in the sensing ranges between 1.34 and 1.37. Based on the suggested sensor model may provide great impact in biological area such as bio-imaging.

Project description:This article represents the data set of micro porous core photonic crystal fiber based chemical sensor. The suggested structure is folded cladding porous shaped with circular air hole. Here is investigated four distinctive parameters including relative sensitivity, confinement loss, numerical aperture (NA), and effective area (Aeff). The numerical outcomes are computed over the E+S+C+L+U communication band. The useable sensed chemicals are methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, and pentanol whose are lies in the alcohol series (Paul et al., 2017) [1]. Furthermore, V-parameter (V), Marcuse spot size (MSS), and beam divergence (BD) are also investigated rigorously. All examined results have been obtained using finite element method based simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2 versions with anisotropic circular perfectly matched layer (A-CPML). The proposed PCF shows the high NA from 0.35 to 0.36; the low CL from ~10-11 to ~10-7 dB/m; the high Aeff from 5.50 to 5.66 µm2; the MSS from 1.0 to 1.08 µm; the BD from 0.43 to 0.46 rad at the controlling wavelength λ = 1.55 µm for employing alcohol series respectively.

Infiltrated Photonic Crystal Fibers for Sensing Applications.

Project description:Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are a special class of optical fibers with a periodic arrangement of microstructured holes located in the fiber's cladding. Light confinement is achieved by means of either index-guiding, or the photonic bandgap effect in a low-index core. Ever since PCFs were first demonstrated in 1995, their special characteristics, such as potentially high birefringence, very small or high nonlinearity, low propagation losses, and controllable dispersion parameters, have rendered them unique for many applications, such as sensors, high-power pulse transmission, and biomedical studies. When the holes of PCFs are filled with solids, liquids or gases, unprecedented opportunities for applications emerge. These include, but are not limited in, supercontinuum generation, propulsion of atoms through a hollow fiber core, fiber-loaded Bose?Einstein condensates, as well as enhanced sensing and measurement devices. For this reason, infiltrated PCF have been the focus of intensive research in recent years. In this review, the fundamentals and fabrication of PCF infiltrated with different materials are discussed. In addition, potential applications of infiltrated PCF sensors are reviewed, identifying the challenges and limitations to scale up and commercialize this novel technology.

Surface Plasmon Resonance-Based Fiber-Optic Metallic Multilayer Biosensors.

Project description:Accurate and quick sensing of various biomolecules relevant to different health conditions is indispensable in modern diagnosis and treatment procedures. Different multilayer metallic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor configurations comprising Au, Ag, Al, and Cu are analyzed in this work by employing an N-layer matrix formalism as applied to the fixed-angle spectral SPR sensing methodology. Stringent standards for sensitivity, detection accuracy, and figure of merit (FOM) of the sensor configurations are set to analyze the relative merits of one configuration over another. It is observed that three- and four-layer configurations using Al and Cu provide the best FOM among all sensors that passed the set standard criteria. The highest FOM (1433.82/RIU) is observed for the four-layer Al/Cu/Al/Cu sensor for an analyte refractive index of 1.408. The sensors are best suited for detecting analytes with a refractive index range of 1.350-1.414.

Gas sensing with high-resolution localized surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy.

Project description:We report the first inert gas sensing and characterization studies based on high-resolution localized surface plasmon resonance (HR-LSPR) spectroscopy. HR-LSPR was used to detect the extremely small changes (<3 × 10(-4)) in bulk refractive index when the gas was switched between He(g) and Ar(g) or He(g) and N2(g). We also demonstrate submonolayer sensitivity to adsorbed water from exposure of the sensor to air (40% humidity) versus dry N2(g). These measurements significantly expand the applications space and characterization tools for plasmonic nanosensors.

Au-WO3 Nanocomposite Coatings for Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensing.

Project description:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) gas sensors are gaining increasing importance due to their unique tuneable functional properties. Au-WO3-x nanocomposite coatings, in particular, can be outstandingly sensitive to many different gases. However, a proper understanding of their optical properties and the way in which those properties are correlated to their structure/microstructure, is still needed. In this work, Au-WO3 nanocomposite coatings, with Au contents between 0-11 atomic percent, were grown using reactive magnetron co-sputtering technique and were characterized concerning their optical response. The precipitation of Au nanoparticles in the oxide matrix was promoted through thermal annealing treatments until 500 °C. Along with the Au nanoparticles' morphological changes, the annealing treatments stimulated the crystallization of WO3, together with the appearance of oxygen-deficient WO3-x phases. Through theoretical simulations, we have related the LSPR effect with the different structural and morphological variations (namely, size and distribution of the nanoparticles and their local environment), which were a function of the Au content and annealing temperature. Our results suggest that local voids were present in the vicinity of the Au nanoparticles, for all temperature range, and that they should be present in a wide variety of Au-WO3 nanocomposites. A theoretical study concerning the refractive index sensitivity was carried out in order to predict the optimal coating design parameters for gas sensing experiments.

Smartphone-based surface plasmon resonance sensing platform for rapid detection of bacteria.

Project description:Bacterial infection poses severe threats to public health, and early rapid detection of the pathogen is critical for controlling bacterial infectious diseases. Current methods are commonly labor intensive, time consuming or dependent on lab-based equipment. In this study, we proposed a novel and practical method for bacterial detection based on smartphones using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomena of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The proposed smartphone-based SPR sensing method is achieved by utilizing color development that arises from the change in interparticle distance of AuNPs induced by bacterial lysate. The pictures of bacteria/AuNPs color development were captured, and their color signals were acquired through a commercial smartphone. The proposed method has a detection range between 2.44 × 105 and 1.25 × 108 cfu mL-1 and a detection limit of 8.81 × 104 cfu mL-1. Furthermore, this method has acceptable recoveries (between 85.7% and 95.4%) when measuring spiked real waters. Combining smartphone-based signal reading with AuNP-dependent color development also offers the following advantages: easy-to-use, real-time detection, free of complex equipment and low cost. In view of these features, this sensing platform would have widespread applications in the fields of medical, food, and environmental sciences.

Identification and Quantification of Celery Allergens Using Fiber Optic Surface Plasmon Resonance PCR.

Project description:Abstract: Accurate identification and quantification of allergens is key in healthcare, biotechnology and food quality and safety. Celery (Apium graveolens) is one of the most important elicitors of food allergic reactions in Europe. Currently, the golden standards to identify, quantify and discriminate celery in a biological sample are immunoassays and two-step molecular detection assays in which quantitative PCR (qPCR) is followed by a high-resolution melting analysis (HRM). In order to provide a DNA-based, rapid and simple detection method suitable for one-step quantification, a fiber optic PCR melting assay (FO-PCR-MA) was developed to determine different concentrations of celery DNA (1 pM-0.1 fM). The presented method is based on the hybridization and melting of DNA-coated gold nanoparticles to the FO sensor surface in the presence of the target gene (mannitol dehydrogenase, Mtd). The concept was not only able to reveal the presence of celery DNA, but also allowed for the cycle-to-cycle quantification of the target sequence through melting analysis. Furthermore, the developed bioassay was benchmarked against qPCR followed by HRM, showing excellent agreement (R² = 0.96). In conclusion, this innovative and sensitive diagnostic test could further improve food quality control and thus have a large impact on allergen induced healthcare problems.

Sensitive pH Monitoring Using a Polyaniline-Functionalized Fiber Optic-Surface Plasmon Resonance Detector.

Project description:In this work, we report results on the fabrication and characterization of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) pH sensor using platinum (Pt) and polyaniline (PANI) layers successively coated over an unclad core of an optical fiber (FO). The plasmonic thin Pt layer was deposited using a magnetron sputtering technique, while the pH-sensitive PANI layer was synthesized using an electroless polymerization method. Moreover, the formation of PANI film was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique and its surface morphology was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the PANI/Pt-coated FO-SPR pH sensor exhibits a fast and linear response in either acid or alkali solutions (pH operational range: 1 to 14). The proposed FO-SPR sensor could be used for biomedical applications, environmental monitoring or any remote, real-time on-site measurements.

Nano Sensing and Energy Conversion Using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR).

Project description:Nanophotonic technique has been attracting much attention in applications of nano-bio-chemical sensing and energy conversion of solar energy harvesting and enhanced energy transfer. One approach for nano-bio-chemical sensing is surface plasmon resonance (SPR) imaging, which can detect the material properties, such as density, ion concentration, temperature, and effective refractive index in high sensitivity, label-free, and real-time under ambient conditions. Recent study shows that SPR can successfully detect the concentration variation of nanofluids during evaporation-induced self-assembly process. Spoof surface plasmon resonance based on multilayer metallo-dielectric hyperbolic metamaterials demonstrate SPR dispersion control, which can be combined with SPR imaging, to characterize high refractive index materials because of its exotic optical properties. Furthermore, nano-biophotonics could enable innovative energy conversion such as the increase of absorption and emission efficiency and the perfect absorption. Localized SPR using metal nanoparticles show highly enhanced absorption in solar energy harvesting. Three-dimensional hyperbolic metamaterial cavity nanostructure shows enhanced spontaneous emission. Recently ultrathin film perfect absorber is demonstrated with the film thickness is as low as ~1/50th of the operating wavelength using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) phenomena at the wavelength close to SPR. It is expected to provide a breakthrough in sensing and energy conversion applications using the exotic optical properties based on the nanophotonic technique.

Topological supermodes in photonic crystal fiber.

Project description:Topological states enable robust transport within disorder-rich media through integer invariants inextricably tied to the transmission of light, sound, or electrons. However, the challenge remains to exploit topological protection in a length-scalable platform such as optical fiber. We demonstrate, through both modeling and experiment, optical fiber that hosts topological supermodes across multiple light-guiding cores. We directly measure the photonic winding number invariant characterizing the bulk and observe topological guidance of visible light over meter length scales. Furthermore, the mechanical flexibility of fiber allows us to reversibly reconfigure the topological state. As the fiber is bent, we find that the edge states first lose their localization and then become relocalized because of disorder. We envision fiber as a scalable platform to explore and exploit topological effects in photonic networks.
