Template-free synthesis of monolithic carbon xerogels with hierarchical porosity from resorcinol and formaldehyde <i>via</i> hydrothermal reaction.

Project description:Monolithic carbon xerogels with hierarchical porosity were prepared from resorcinol (R) and formaldehyde (F) via a base-catalysed hydrothermal polycondensation reaction, without a template and supercritical drying. First, an aqueous solution of resorcinol, formaldehyde and sodium carbonate was prepared by varying R/W (25-45) and R/C (1-10k) ratios to produce monolithic RF gels. The reaction was carried out in a pressurized Teflon mould at 100 °C for 6 h to give a co-continuous pore structure via spinodal decomposition and a tenacious gel to avoid supercritical drying. Next, the RF gels were dried for 42 h at 60 °C and another 6 h at 100 °C to produce RF xerogels without cracks, followed by pyrolysis in a tube furnace at 900 °C for 2 h under N2 flow, and then activation at 1000 °C for 2, 4 or 6 h under CO2 flow. Finally, the carbon xerogels were characterized by SEM and N2 adsorption-desorption measurements. Monolithic RF gels were obtained from all combinations of R/W and R/C, but the gels from R/W = 45 exhibited a co-continuous large-pore structure, providing a specific surface area (SSA) of ∼650 m2 g-1, which increased to 3311 m2 g-1 (for R/C = 10k) at 6 h of CO2 activation without exhibiting cracks. N2 isotherms demonstrated that micro- and meso-pores were introduced via activation, forming hierarchical porosity in combination with large pores from spinodal decomposition without using a template.

Oriented Carbon Nanostructures from Plasma Reformed Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Polymer Gels for Gas Sensor Applications.

Project description:Oriented carbon nanostructures (OCNs) with dominant graphitic characteristics have attracted research interest for various applications due to the excellent electrical and optical properties owing to their vertical orientation, interconnected structures, electronic properties, and large surface area. Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) is considered as a promising method for the large-scale synthesis of OCNs. Alternatively, structural reformation of natural carbon precursor or phenol-based polymers using plasma-assisted surface treatment is also considered for the fabrication of OCNs. In this work, we have demonstrated a fast technique for the synthesis of OCNs by plasma-assisted structure reformation of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) polymer gels using radio-frequency inductively coupled plasma (rf-ICP). A thin layer of RF polymer gel cast on a glass substrate was used as the carbon source and treated with rf plasma under different plasma discharge conditions. Argon and hydrogen gases were used in surface treatment, and the growth of carbon nanostructures at different discharge parameters was systematically examined. This study explored the influence of the gas flow rate, the plasma power, and the treatment time on the structural reformation of polymer gel to produce OCNs. Moreover, the gas-sensing properties of as-prepared OCNs towards ethanol at atmospheric conditions were also investigated.

Electrochemical properties of an activated carbon xerogel monolith from resorcinol-formaldehyde for supercapacitor electrode applications.

Project description:Activated carbon xerogel monoliths were prepared from resorcinol and formaldehyde via a catalyst-free and template-free hydrothermal polycondensation reaction, followed by pyrolysis and activation. The ratio of resorcinol (R) to distilled water (W) was varied to afford an interconnected pore structure with controlled pore size, while the pyrolysis temperature was optimized to give high specific surface area. Activation was carried out at 700 °C after soaking the samples in 6 M KOH aqueous solution. The same process, called "heat treatment", was also carried out without soaking in KOH for comparison. The weight loss upon pyrolysis, activation and heat treatment and the weight gain via KOH soaking were measured. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and an N2 sorption instrument were utilized for characterization. Additionally, electrochemical properties were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with a 3-electrode system, while a 2-electrode system was also employed for selected samples. The highest specific capacitance of 323 F g-1 via GCD at 1 A g-1 was obtained at the R/W ratio of 45 and with 500 °C pyrolysis. In addition, this sample also exhibited 89.4% retention at 20 A g-1 in the current density variation and 100% retention in 5000 cycling tests.

Resorcinol Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles for Formaldehyde Colorimetric Detection.

Project description:Gold nanoparticles functionalized with resorcinol moieties have been prepared and used for detecting formaldehyde both in solution and gas phases. The detection mechanism is based on the color change of the probe upon the aggregation of the nanoparticles induced by the polymerization of the resorcinol moieties in the presence of formaldehyde. A limit of detection of 0.5 ppm in solution has been determined. The probe can be deployed for the detection of formaldehyde emissions from composite wood boards.

Kinetics of Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Condensation-Comparison of Common Experimental Techniques.

Project description:Porous carbons, originated from resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) gels, show high application potential. However, the kinetics and mechanism of RF condensation are still not well described. In this work, different methods (dynamic light scattering-DLS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-FTIR, low field 1H nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry-1H-NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry-DSC) were used to follow the isothermal RF condensation of mixtures varying in catalyst content (Na2CO3) and reactant concentration. The applicability and results obtained by the methods used differ significantly. The changes in functional groups can be followed by FTIR only at very early stages of the reaction. DLS enables the estimate of the growth of particles in reaction solution, but only before the solution becomes more viscous. Following the relaxation of 1H nuclei in water during RF condensation brings a different view on the system-this technique follows the properties of the present water that is gradually captured in polymeric gel. From this side, the process behaves similarly to the nucleation reaction, which is in contradiction to the n-order mechanism confirmed by other techniques. The widest range of applicability was found for DSC measurement of the freezing/melting behavior of the reaction mixture, which is possible to use without any limitations until full solidification. Furthermore, this approach enables us to follow the gradual formation and development of the gel through the intermediate undergoing glass transition.

Silica-Resorcinol-Melamine-Formaldehyde Composite Aerogels as High-Performance Thermal Insulators.

Project description:Here, we report the gelation and supercritical drying of ethanol-based silica-resorcinol-melamine-formaldehyde (RMF) composite aerogels with relative concentrations of initial reagents ranging from neat silica to neat RMF alcogels. The as-prepared materials are subsequently supercritically dried with carbon dioxide. Their properties include a thermal conductivity in the 15-20 mW·m-1·K-1 range even with a silica content as low as 20%wt. The possible reasons behind this interesting insulation performance and the mechanisms leading to the underlying gel structure are discussed in depth. A focus is made on the different gelation modes happening between the RMF and silica phases, from a coating of silica surfaces with RMF species to discontinuous RMF particles within a silica backbone and a continuous RMF backbone with isolated silica particles. The implications in terms of mechanical properties and thermal conductivity are elaborated upon. The initial ratio of silica-RMF species in this ethanol-based synthesis affects the micro- and macrostructure of the composites, resulting in materials with drastically different pore structures and thus an interesting array of possibilities for a new class of silica-organic composite aerogels, based on a sol-gel process.

Investigating the Role of the Catalyst within Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Gel Synthesis.

Project description:Resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) gels are porous materials synthesized via a sol-gel reaction and subsequently dried, producing structures with high surface areas and low densities-properties that are highly attractive for use in various applications. The RF gel reaction takes place in the presence of a catalyst, either acidic or basic in nature, the concentration of which significantly impacts final gel properties. The full extent of the catalyst's role, however, has been subject to debate, with the general consensus within the field being that it is simply a pH-adjuster. The work presented here explores this theory, in addition to other theories postulated in the literature, through the synthesis and analysis of RF gels catalysed by mixtures of relevant compounds with varying concentrations. The relationship between catalyst concentration and initial solution pH is decoupled, and the individual roles of both the cation and the anion within the catalyst are investigated. The results presented here point towards the significance of the metal cation within the RF gel reaction, with similar structural properties observed for gels synthesized at constant Na+ concentrations, regardless of the initial solution pH. Furthermore, through the use of alternative cations and anions within catalyst compounds, the potential effects of ions on the stabilization of macromolecules in solution are explored, the results of which suggest a 'Hofmeister-like' series could be applicable within the catalysis of RF gel reactions.

Graphitized Carbon Xerogels for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Carbon xerogels with different macropore sizes and degrees of graphitization were evaluated as electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. It was found that pore structure of the xerogels has a marked effect on the degree of graphitization of the final carbons. Moreover, the incorporation of graphene oxide to the polymeric structure of the carbon xerogels also leads to a change in their carbonaceous structure and to a remarkable increase in the graphitic phase of the samples studied. The sample with the highest degree of graphitization (i.e., hybrid graphene-carbon xerogel) displayed the highest capacity and stability over 100 cycles, with values even higher than those of the commercial graphite SLP50 used as reference.

Novel preparation of metal-free carbon xerogels under acidic conditions and their performance as high-energy density supercapacitor electrodes.

Project description:The development of metal-free supercapacitor electrodes with a high energy density is a crucial requirement in the global shift towards sustainable energy sources and industrial pursuit of an optimal supercapacitor. Indeed, from an industrial perspective, time assumes a paramount role in the manufacturing process. A majority of synthesis methods employed for the fabrication of carbon xerogel-based supercapacitor electrodes are characterized by prolonged durations, and result in relatively poor energy and power density. These limitations hinder their practical applications and impede their widespread manufacturing capabilities. In this study, carbon xerogel-based supercapacitor electrodes were made in the shortest time ever reported by making the condition highly acidic with hydrochloric acid (HCl). Furthermore, the investigation of the effect of HCl concentrations (0.1 M, 0.05 M, and 0.01 M) on the morphology and electrochemical behavior of the prepared samples is reported herein. Interestingly, the highest concentration of HCl developed the highest BET surface area, 1032 m2 g-1, which enforced the capacitive behavior to deliver a specific capacitance of 402 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and a capacitance retention of 80.8% at a current density of 2 A g-1 in an electrolyte containing 0.5 M H2SO4 + 0.5 M Na2SO4. Moreover, an impressive energy density of 45 W h kg-1 at a power density of 18.2 kW kg-1 was achieved. Interestingly, as the HCl concentration increased, the equivalent series resistance decreased to 3.9 W with carbon xerogel 0.1 M HCl (CX0.1). The superior performance of CX0.1 may be attributed to its enlarged BET surface area, pore volume, pore diameter, and smaller particle size. This work provides a facile approach for the large-scale production of metal-free carbon supercapacitor electrodes with improved performance and stability and opens novel horizons to explore the impacts of many types of catalysts during the carbon xerogel preparation.
