ABSTRACT: The data presented herein are results of the research summary of the investigation for pozzolanic activity in coconut shell ash (CSA) towards a sustainable construction. The data article provides information on the properties of Coconut Shell Ash that are indicative of pozzolanic activity as stated in ASTM C618-15 (2015) [1], BS EN 197-1 (2011) [2] and Joshua et al. (2018) [3]. The data are the physical property of the sand used in determining the binder strengths and the chemical and physical properties (oxide composition and Strength Activity Indices respectively) of the pulverized, calcined and sieved Coconut Shell Ash.

Project description:In today's world where the effects of global warming are intense, alternative approaches for a sustainable concrete sector are rapidly increasing. The partial replacement of waste materials, such as bottom ash and marble powder to cement, leads to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The expected quality of materials to be used for the concrete sector is very important in terms of building safety. New building materials and binder materials offered as an alternative are often unable to meet this requirement due to existing standards. Therefore, the existing standards should be reviewed and alternative construction materials should be provided for the sector. This dataset would be beneficial for other researchers who design sustainable concrete. Although the data presented herein deals with pure paste, the authors believe that the data can be used for mix design in the concrete construction sector to reduce the cement amount for various civil engineering projects, from low to medium strength concrete applications. The data compiled herein were obtained from the fresh and hardened properties at 7, 28 and 56 days. Physico-mechanical characterization and sulphate resistance were analyzed for laboratory produced marble paste composites. The dataset described here is the pilot study of the "High-volume marble substitution in cement-paste: towards a better sustainability" [1] and "Novel coal bottom ash waste composites for sustainable construction" [2].

Pozzolanic activity of kaolins containing aluminum hydroxide.

Project description:The addition of 10 wt% aluminum hydroxide to two crude kaolinitic clays, a commercial and a natural freshly mined one, has enhanced their pozzolanic activity, more substantially in the natural sample containing gibbsite. The obtained blends were used as replacement of 20 wt% of Portland cement in the formulations of pastes and mortars which exhibited significant decrease of setting time and increase of compressive strength from early age to 28 days. Also, SEM/EDX analyses showed very heterogeneous structures with hydrated phases identified from XRD. Specific interpretation of the role played by aluminum hydroxide revealed its aptitude to promote the formation of metastable hydrated phases (CAH10/C2AH8) at early age, which temporally inhibited the hydration of cement. This progressive transformation led to the formation of more stable hydrated phases such as C-A-S-H which favored the increase of mechanical strength of the specimens. The sequence of transformation reactions is fully obtained with limited aluminum hydroxide content in clays. Either added as synthetic or naturally occurring in clays, aluminum hydroxide has close role in the strengthening process of cement. Hence, kaolinitic clays that naturally contain gibbsite are suggested as suitable supplementary cementitious material for partial replacement of cement.

Scheffe's Simplex Optimization of Flexural Strength of Quarry Dust and Sawdust Ash Pervious Concrete for Sustainable Pavement Construction.

Project description:Pervious concrete provides a tailored surface course with high permeability properties which permit the easy flow of water through a larger interconnected porous structure to prevent flooding hazards. This paper reports the modeling of the flexural properties of quarry dust (QD) and sawdust ash (SDA) blended green pervious concrete for sustainable road pavement construction using Scheffe's (5,2) optimization approach. The simplex mixture design method was adapted to formulate the mixture proportion to eliminate the set-backs encountered in empirical or trials and the error design approach, which consume more time and resources to design with experimental runs required to evaluate the response function. For the laboratory evaluation exercise, a maximum flexural strength of 3.703 N/mm2 was obtained with a mix proportion of 0.435:0.95:0.1:1.55:0.05 for water, cement, QD, coarse aggregate and SDA, respectively. Moreover, the minimal flexural strength response of 2.504 N/mm2 was obtained with a mix ratio of 0.6:0.75:0.3:4.1:0.25 for water, cement, QD, coarse aggregate and SDA, respectively. The test of the appropriateness of the developed model was statistically verified using the Student' t-test and an analysis of variance (ANOVA), and was confirmed to be acceptable based on computational outcomes at the 95% confidence interval. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were used to evaluate the morphological and mineralogical behavior of green prior concrete samples with various additive mixture compositions. The addition of QD and SDA, on the other hand, aided the creation of porous microstructures in the concrete matrix due to fabric changes in the concrete mixture, potentially aided by the formation of cementitious compounds such as calcium aluminate hydrate and calcium silicate hydrate.

Pozzolanic activity experimental dataset of calcined coal gangue.

Project description:The coal gangue in this dataset was subjected to a series of processes, including drying, crushing, and milling. Subsequently, the coal gangue powder was subjected to high-temperature calcination in a muffle furnace, with a heating rate of 4 ℃/min. The pozzolanic activity of coal gangue powder was investigated at various calcination temperatures (600 ℃, 700 ℃, 800 ℃, 900 ℃) and different holding times (1h, 2h). Cement mortar specimens containing calcined coal gangue powder were prepared, and their compressive and flexural strengths were tested to evaluate the reactivity of the calcined coal gangue. In addition, the Rapid, Relevant and Reliable (R3) activity test was conducted to test the reactivity. The thermogravimetric analyzer was employed to determine the TG-DTG curves of coal gangue powder. X-ray diffractometer, Fourier infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscope were utilized to investigate the microstructure of activated coal gangue powder at different temperature ranges. These data can be used for determining the optimal calcination scheme of coal gangue to maximize its potential as a partial cement clinker replacement in cement production, thereby contributing to cost reduction and carbon emission mitigation.

Data for the marble-cement paste composites for sustainable construction.

Project description:Waste utilization is crucial for achieving sustainability in the construction industry. This article provides data that demonstrate the possibility of industrial waste utilization in high volumes to enhance cementitious composites. This dataset could help researchers understand the cement paste composites' behavior in the fresh and hardened state. The data were obtained from the physical, mechanical, and durability tests of laboratory-produced samples. The composites were tested at 7, 28, and 90-days of hardening, according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The obtained values were then evaluated using the DataFit curve fitting (nonlinear regression) and data plotting software. Additionally, two spreadsheets were created to help researchers calculate their weights and calculate the bulk specific gravity, water absorption, and porosity values. Integrated Use of Furnace Bottom Ash as Fine Aggregate and Cement Replacement for Sustainable Mortar Production.

Project description:Recycling fly ash (FA) and furnace bottom ash (FBA) help with reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving natural resources, and minimizing waste accumulation. However, research on recycling FBA is progressing more slowly compared to FA. This research aims to investigate the combined use of FBA as a replacement for both fine aggregate and cement and its influence on the performance of mortar. The findings indicated that incorporating 25% FBA as a fine aggregate replacement and 10% or 20% ground FBA (GFBA) as a cement replacement significantly enhanced compressive strength after 28 and 56 days. Flexural strength was comparable to control mortar at 28 days and superior at 56 days. However, increasing the FBA content beyond 25% as a fine aggregate replacement reduced workability and increased porosity, which negatively affected mechanical performance and water absorption. Microstructural analyses revealed denser and more compact structures in the mortar with combined FBA replacement for both fine aggregate and cement, specifically 25% as a fine aggregate replacement and 10% and 20% as cement replacements. Optimal performance was noted in mixtures with Ca/Si and Ca/Al ratios within the ranges of 1.8-1.5 and 0.24-0.19, respectively. Trace element leaching analysis has not shown significant differences between GFBA, FA, and OPC. Regarding environmental impact assessment, using FBA as a fine aggregate replacement did not show a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, but replacing cement with FBA reduced emissions remarkably. Generally, using FBA as a replacement for both fine aggregate and cement in mortar enhances compressive and flexural strengths at optimal levels, promotes sustainability by reducing landfill waste and CO2 emissions, and supports cleaner production practices despite some workability challenges.

Data showing the effects of vibratory disc milling time on the microstructural characteristics of Coconut Shell Nanoparticles (CS-NPs).

Project description:Coconut Shell (CS) as agricultural lignocellulosic biomaterial and agro-waste is predominantly available in India, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. It has proven to have effective durability characteristic, good abstractive resistance, high toughness, and good adsorption properties, and is most suitable for long standing use in many applications such as reinforcement, source of energy, fillers as well as activated carbon and its performance, efficiency and effectiveness depend wholly on whether is in form of nano-, micro-, and macro- particles. In this data, effects of milling time on morphological characteristics was experimented using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyses. The SEM images were taken at magnifications of 1.00kx, 2.00kx and 5.00kx which gives respective 50 µm, 20 µm and 10 µm in different milling time of 0, 20, 40 and 60 mins. Digital Vibratory Disc Milling Machine (VDMM) rated 380 V/50 Hz at 940 rpm was employed for the grinding and the morphology of the milled nanoparticles were characterised. It was revealed from the data collected that 0 min (i.e. 75 µm sieved) has the highest mean area value of 16.105 µm2 and area standard deviation of 200.738 µm2 with least value of a number of particle size distribution of 809 µm. In contrast, 60 mins milled has the lowest values for mean area and area standard deviation of 8.945 µm2 and 115.851 µm2 respectively with the highest number of particle size distribution of 2032 µm. It was observed that milling time increases the number of particle sizes distributions and reduces the area of particle size.

Enhanced phosphate sequestration by Fe(iii) modified biochar derived from coconut shell.

Project description:In this work, a novel Fe-modified coconut shell biochar (Fe-CSB) was synthesized and utilized to remove phosphate from aqueous solution. Characterization results confirmed that the iron in the Fe(iii)-impregnated CSB existed mainly in the amorphous phase, as ferrihydrite and amorphous hydroxide, which substantially enhanced the phosphate adsorption. Batch experiments indicated that phosphate adsorption on the Fe-CSB was highly dependent on the pH, the humic acid, and temperature, while it was less affected by the nitrate. Phosphate adsorption by the CSB and Fe-CSB could be well described by the pseudo n-th order and Langmuir-Freundlich models. The fitting of the experimental data with the intra-particle diffusion model revealed that surface adsorption and inner-sphere diffusion were involved in the phosphate adsorption process, and that the latter was the rate-controlling step. Batch adsorption experiments and post-adsorption characterization results revealed that the phosphate adsorption by Fe-CSB was primarily governed by four mechanisms: ligand exchange, electrostatic attraction, chemical precipitation, and inner-sphere complexation. This work demonstrated that the modified Fe-CSB is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective bioretention medium and could open up new pathways for the removal of phosphorus from stormwater, as well as solve the problem of waste biomass pollution.

Hierarchical Porous Activated Carbon Derived from Coconut Shell for Ultrahigh-Performance Supercapacitors.

Project description:In this research, we successfully produced hierarchical porous activated carbon from biowaste employing one-step KOH activation and applied as ultrahigh-performance supercapacitor electrode materials. The coconut shell-derived activated carbon (CSAC) features a hierarchical porous structure in a honeycomb-like morphology, leading to a high specific surface area (2228 m2 g-1) as well as a significant pore volume (1.07 cm3 g-1). The initial test with the CSAC electrode, conducted in a 6 M KOH loaded symmetric supercapacitor, demonstrated an ultrahigh capacitance of 367 F g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1 together with 92.09% retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g-1. More impressively, the zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor using CSAC as a cathode achieves a high-rate capability (153 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 and 75 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1), high energy density (134.9 Wh kg-1 at 175 W kg-1), as well as exceptional cycling stability (93.81% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g-1). Such work thus illuminates a new pathway for converting biowaste-derived carbons into materials for ultrahigh-performance energy storge applications.

Data showing the effects of geotechnical properties of lateritic soil mixed with coconut shell powder in Ado-Ekiti, south western Nigeria.

Project description:In this data, the effect of locally available additive Coconut shell powder (CSP) substitute in determining the geotechnical properties of Ado Ekiti soil was assessed. The samples were collected from two borrow pits, Ado-Ijan road and Ado-Ilawe road, at two points each, and were treated using substitute of coconut shell powder, considering several percentages of its content at 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%. Laboratory tests such as specific gravity, consistency limit test, grain size distribution test, compaction test, CBR test, triaxial compression test, permeability test was conducted on the soil samples collected, and untreated soil was determined. The summary shows that the liquid limit, plastic limit, Plasticity Index, Maximum Dry Density and Optimum Moisture Content increases with increase in percentage of the additive and later decrease at higher percentage of additive, mostly at 8% and 10% respectively. The value of California Bearing ratio in percentage increases as the percentage of additive increases, although at 0% additive, the soil does not meet specification of road construction and the value of permeability 'k' also increases. The summary of triaxial test also shows increase in the strength properties of the soil at certain percentage likewise, the summary of unconfined compressive strength shows same. This indicates that the additives improves the geotechnical properties of the soil samples to a certain percentage and conversely, have a negative effect on it at a higher percentage 8% and 10% respectively.
