Project description:Cities are at the heart of climate change mitigation as they account for over 70% of global carbon emissions. However, cities vary in their energy systems and socioeconomic capacities to transition to renewable energy. To address this heterogeneity, this study proposes an Energy Transition Index (ETI) specifically designed for cities, and applies it to track the progress of energy transition in Chinese cities. The city-level ETI framework is based on the national ETI developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and comprises two sub-indexes: the Energy System Performance sub-index, which evaluates the current status of cities' energy systems in terms of energy transition, and the Transition Readiness sub-index, which assesses their socioeconomic capacity for future energy transition. The initial version of the dataset includes ETI and its sub-indexes for 282 Chinese cities from 2003 to 2019, with annual updates planned. The spatiotemporal data provided by the dataset facilitates research into the energy transition roadmap for different cities, which can help China achieve its energy transition goals.

Project description:As the largest carbon dioxide emitter, China is working towards the direction of a green economy. As an irreplaceable part of establishing a green economy, the low-carbon city pilot (LCCP) policy is implemented in many large cities in China, and the scope of implementation will be further expanded. However, to date, there has been an absence of empirical studies basing on prefecture-level cities about the evaluation of China's LCCP policy. Evaluating and optimizing the LCCP policy is constructive to achieve the goal of China's green economic transition. In this paper, we evaluated the effect of the LCCP policy on China's low-carbon economic transition by using the difference-in-difference (DID) approach which can effectively alleviate endogenous problems and better evaluate this effect and the panel data of 210 prefecture-level cities in China from 2008 to 2016. The empirical analysis revealed that the LCCP policy inhibited China's low-carbon economic transition in general. Specifically, the policy worked well in the eastern region but failed in the central region and western region by studying the regional heterogeneity and influence mechanism. The reason is that the LCCP policy can stimulate low-carbon innovation with the help of innovation offset effects in the eastern region, but it failed to do so in the central region and western region. In addition, this paper analyzed the performance of three types of policy tools adopted by local governments to implement the policy, we found that market-economic tools are valuable to improving the low-carbon economic transition in pilot areas, but command-mandatory tools and voluntary tools have failed to achieve the expected objectives. The research results of this article can provide policy recommendations for optimizing the low-carbon policy and provide a reference for countries that are determined to develop a green economy.

Project description:In the context of the thriving real estate market in developing countries like Vietnam, understanding consumer preferences and effectively addressing them through a comprehensive multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework is paramount for real estate providers. This study presents a two-stage MCDM model that integrates the Delphi technique and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) based on Spherical Fuzzy Sets (SFSs). Initially, the SF-Delphi technique validates critical criteria influencing customers' apartment selection in Vietnam. Secondly, the SF-TOPSIS method evaluates the top ten apartment providers. To ensure robustness and validity, a comparative analysis compares the results with those from the Intuitionistic Fuzzy TOPSIS (IF-TOPSIS) and Fuzzy TOPSIS (F-TOPSIS) methods. Subsequently, five rank correlation coefficients (Spearman, Kendall, Goodman-Kruskal, Weighted rank measure of correlation, Weighted Similarity) are used to assess the relationships between various TOPSIS techniques applied to apartment suppliers in Vietnam. The correlation coefficients demonstrate strong agreement among the TOPSIS methods, with the smallest coefficient being 0.7778, surpassing the threshold of 0.7. This high level of consistency confirms the efficacy of the proposed TOPSIS approach with different Fuzzy Sets in reliably evaluating customers' preferences for apartment suppliers. Notably, the legal aspect's prominence underscores its critical role in shaping customer choices, emphasizing the significance of considering legal factors in the context of apartment supply and demand in Vietnam. Furthermore, using SFSs makes this approach particularly suited to capture consumer perceptions within the dynamic and uncertain business environment characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA).

Project description:Cities' transition from fossil-based systems of energy production and consumption to renewable energy sources-the energy transition-is critical to mitigating climate change impact as cities' energy consumption and CO2 emissions account for two-thirds and over 70% of the world's total, respectively. Given cities' heterogeneity, they need specific low-carbon roadmaps instead of one-size-fits-all approaches. Here, we used an Energy Transition Index (ETI) to characterize the city-level energy transitions from energy system performance and transition readiness dimensions. The ETI scores for 282 cities in China revealed a significant heterogeneity across cities and over time, and the gap between the cities in the top and bottom quartiles was persistent. We estimated that China's energy and carbon intensity could decrease by 34% and 32%, respectively, and that carbon per capita could fall by 17% if each city modestly follows the sustainable development path forged by the best performing cities with similar economic structures.

Project description:Designing preventive programs relevant to vector-borne diseases such as Lyme disease (LD) can be complex given the need to include multiple issues and perspectives into prioritizing public health actions. A multi-criteria decision aid (MCDA) model was previously used to rank interventions for LD prevention in Quebec, Canada, where the disease is emerging. The aim of the current study was to adapt and evaluate the decision model constructed in Quebec under a different epidemiological context, in Switzerland, where LD has been endemic for the last thirty years. The model adaptation was undertaken with a group of Swiss stakeholders using a participatory approach. The PROMETHEE method was used for multi-criteria analysis. Key elements and results of the MCDA model are described and contrasted with the Quebec model. All criteria and most interventions of the MCDA model developed for LD prevention in Quebec were directly transferable to the Swiss context. Four new decision criteria were added, and the list of proposed interventions was modified. Based on the overall group ranking, interventions targeting human populations were prioritized in the Swiss model, with the top ranked action being the implementation of a large communication campaign. The addition of criteria did not significantly alter the intervention rankings, but increased the capacity of the model to discriminate between highest and lowest ranked interventions. The current study suggests that beyond the specificity of the MCDA models developed for Quebec and Switzerland, their general structure captures the fundamental and common issues that characterize the complexity of vector-borne disease prevention. These results should encourage public health organizations to adapt, use and share MCDA models as an effective and functional approach to enable the integration of multiple perspectives and considerations in the prevention and control of complex public health issues such as Lyme disease or other vector-borne and zoonotic diseases.

Project description:This study intends to develop protocols for sampling and characterizing multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) aerosols in workplaces or during inhalation studies. Manufactured dry powder containing MWCNT's, combined with soot and metal catalysts, form complex morphologies and diverse shapes. The aerosols, examined in this study, were produced using an acoustical generator. Representative samples were collected from an exposure chamber using filters and a cascade impactor for microscopic and gravimetric analyses. Results from filters showed that a density of 0.008-0.10 particles per µm² filter surface provided adequate samples for particle counting and sizing. Microscopic counting indicated that MWCNT's, resuspended at a concentration of 10 mg/m³, contained 2.7 × 10⁴ particles/cm³. Each particle structure contained an average of 18 nanotubes, resulting in a total of 4.9 × 10⁵ nanotubes/cm³. In addition, fibrous particles within the aerosol had a count median length of 3.04 µm and a width of 100.3 nm, while the isometric particles had a count median diameter of 0.90 µm. A combination of impactor and microscopic measurements established that the mass median aerodynamic diameter of the mixture was 1.5 µm. It was also determined that the mean effective density of well-defined isometric particles was between 0.71 and 0.88 g/cm³, and the mean shape factor of individual nanotubes was between 1.94 and 2.71. The information obtained from this study can be used for designing animal inhalation exposure studies and adopted as guidance for sampling and characterizing MWCNT aerosols in workplaces. The measurement scheme should be relevant for any carbon nanotube aerosol.

Project description:MicroRNA arrays possess a number of unique data features that challenge the assumption key to many normalization methods. We assessed the performance of existing normalization methods using two microRNA array datasets derived from the same set of tumor samples: one dataset was generated using a blocked randomization design when assigning arrays to samples and hence was free of confounding array effects; the second dataset was generated without blocking or randomization and exhibited array effects. The randomized dataset was assessed for differential expression between two tumor groups and treated as the benchmark. The non-randomized dataset was assessed for differential expression after normalization and compared against the benchmark. Normalization improved the true positive rate significantly in the non-randomized data but still possessed a false discovery rate as high as 50%. Adding a batch adjustment step before normalization further reduced the number of false positive markers while maintaining a similar number of true positive markers, which resulted in a false discovery rate of 32% to 48%, depending on the specific normalization method. We concluded the paper with some insights on possible causes of false discoveries to shed light on how to improve normalization for microRNA arrays.

Project description:ObjectiveTo explore the optimal set of trauma activation criteria predicting paediatric patients' need for acute care following multi-trauma, with particular attention to Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) cut-off value.MethodsA retrospective cohort study of paediatric multi-trauma patients aged 0 to 16 years, performed at a Level 1 paediatric trauma centre. Trauma activation criteria and GCS levels were examined with respect to patients' need for acute care, defined as: direct to operating room disposition, intensive care unit admission, need for acute interventions in the trauma room, or in-hospital death.ResultsWe enrolled 436 patients (median age 8.0 years). The following predicted need for acute care: GCS <14 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 23.0, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 11.5 to 45.9, P < 0.001), hemodynamic instability: (aOR 3.7, 95% CI: 1.2-8.1, P = 0.01), open pneumothorax/flail chest (aOR: 20.0, 95% CI: 4.0 to 98.7, P < 0.001), spinal cord injury (aOR 15.4, 95% CI; 2.4 to 97.1, P = 0.003), blood transfusion at the referring hospital (aOR: 7.7, 95% CI: 1.3 to 44.2, P = 0.02) and GSW to the chest, abdomen, neck, or proximal extremities (aOR 11.0, 95% CI; 1.7 to 70.8, P = 0.01). Using these activation criteria would have decreased over- triage by 10.7%, from 49.1% to 37.2% and under-triage by 1.3%, from 4.7% to 3.5%, in our cohort of patients.ConclusionsUsing GCS<14, hemodynamic instability, open pneumothorax/flail chest, spinal cord injury, blood transfusion at the referring hospital, and GSW to the chest, abdomen, neck of proximal extremities, as T1 activation criteria could decrease over- and under-triage rates. Prospective studies are needed to validate the optimal set of activation criteria in paediatric patients.

Project description:The dataset was formulated through field research in the Greek Municipalities. The survey was undertaken with an online questionnaire (available in Greek) and the contact person was the Chief Digital Officer or a person with similar responsibilities. The final sample is 252 out of a total of 325 Municipalities. Each respondent had to answer to 26 questions, including sub-questions, of different types (1) 5-point Likert scale, (2) rating scale, (3) closed type "Yes/no", (4) open-ended and (5) dropdown, and, depending on them, there are 3 types of variables (1) ordinal, (2) nominal, and (3) scale variables. The concepts included in the questionnaire are a) the level of integration and use of digital technologies, b) the difficulties and the challenges municipality authorities face when trying to implement a smart strategy and c) the level of diverse collaborations and partnerships which are necessary in order to develop a strategy. The data can be used to analyse the strategic capabilities of the Greek Municipalities under the three concepts evaluated in the questionnaire. The data's primary beneficiaries include researchers, public authorities, digital platforms entrepreneurs, smart city specialists and smart city entrepreneurs, as they can use the dataset to develop models against already known results, to identify factors important in an urban strategy and to further study the correlations between the different factors, design and draft an urban strategy on real data.

Project description:This study proposed a multi-criteria evaluation system for arable land resources by combining the soil integrated fertility index (IFI) with a soil cleanliness index (based on heavy metals and metalloid content). A total of 16 typical arable land units in Chongming District, China, were evaluated using the proposed evaluation system based on 104 collected soil samples in 16 towns. The comprehensive soil evaluation scores of arable lands in 16 towns were in the range of 90.7 to 99.2 with a mean of 96.2, indicating that the arable land in all 16 towns was at the level of excellent (≥ 90.0). Lower cleanliness indices had a significant impact on the final evaluation score. In comparison with single-index evaluation systems (i.e., the IFI or soil cleanliness index), the proposed multi-criteria system better reflects the quality of the soil. In the practice of arable land requisition and subsidy policy, the proposed multi-criteria evaluation system not only encourages farmers to preserve arable lands during farming but also helps agricultural authorities make effective and reliable management decisions.
