Experimental data on flexural strength of reinforced concrete elements with waste glass particles as partial replacement for fine aggregate.

ABSTRACT: The data in this article are related to the research article titled "Flexural Strength determination of Reinforced Concrete Elements with Waste Glass as Partial Replacement for Fine Aggregate" [1]. The article provides information on reinforced concrete beam elements with the fine aggregate partially replaced with waste glass in proportions of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%. The beam elements were cured and subjected to flexural load after 7, 14, 28 and 90 days. Three samples were tested for each conditions and the average value computed. The tests records include deflection at each gradual increase in the flexural load and the load at final failure.

Shear Strength of Fiber Reinforced Recycled Aggregate Concrete.

Project description:In this paper, shear strength of fiber reinforced recycled concrete was investigated. A Self Consolidated Concrete (SCC) matrix with 100% coarse recycled aggregate and different types of fibers were used in the study. Steel (3D and 5D), synthetic and hybrid fibers with a volume fraction of 0.75% were added to the concrete matrix to prepare eight beams. In addition, two beams were cast without fibers as control specimens. All beams were prepared without shear reinforcement and were tested to evaluate concrete contribution to the shear capacity. In addition, optical images were captured to allow for full-field displacement measurements using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The results showed about 23.44-64.48% improvement in the average concrete shear capacity for fiber-reinforced beams when compared to that of the control specimens. The percentage improvement was affected by fiber type and the steel fiber beams achieved the best performance. The addition of the fiber delayed the crack initiation and improved the post-cracking and ductile behavior of all beams. Moreover, the experimental results were compared to those predicted by codes and proposed equations found in the literature for concrete strength with and without fibers.

Flexural Strengthening of Concrete Slab-Type Elements with Textile Reinforced Concrete.

Project description:This paper deals with flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) slabs with a carbon textile reinforced concrete (TRC) system. The surface coating treatment was applied to a carbon grid-type textile to increase the bond strength. Short fibers were incorporated into the matrix to mitigate the formation of shrinkage-induced cracks. The tensile properties of the TRC system were evaluated by a direct tensile test with a dumbbell-type grip method. The tensile test results indicated that the effect of the surface coating treatment of the textile on the bonding behavior of the textile within the TRC system was significant. Furthermore, the incorporation of short fibers in the matrix was effective to mitigate shrinkage-induced crack formation and to improve the tensile properties of the TRC system. Six full-scale slab specimens were strengthened with the TRC system and, subsequently, failure tested. The ultimate load-carrying capacity of the strengthened slabs was compared with that of an unstrengthened slab as well as the theoretical solutions. The failure test results indicated that the stiffness and the ultimate flexural capacity of the strengthened slab were at least 112% and 165% greater, respectively, than that of the unstrengthened slab. The test results further indicated that the strengthening effect was not linearly proportional to the amount of textile reinforcement.

Effect of Waste Glass as Fine Aggregate on Properties of Mortar.

Project description:Currently, most cities landfill most waste glass, resulting in the waste of resources and environmental pollution. Therefore, to realize the recycling of waste glass, solid waste glass was recycled and broken. Waste glass sand was prepared according to the gradation of natural river sand particles and the fineness modulus screening. It was used as an alternative material to natural river sand and mixed with mortar materials with different replacements. Analysis of the mortar with different replacements (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%) was conducted by combining macro and micro tests on the change law and influence mechanism of permeability, mechanical properties, and microstructure. The results showed that: the replacement of waste glass sand effectively improved the gas permeation resistance of mortar; with the increase of replacement, the gas permeation resistance of mortar roughly showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing. The replacement of waste glass sand at 20% can better promote cement's hydration so that the mortar's porosity is reduced by 16.5%. The gas permeability decreases by 57.4%; the compressive strength increases by 3%, and the elastic modulus increases by 5.9%. When the replacement rate of glass sand is 20%, the test performance of mortar is the best among the five groups.

Mechanical Properties of Chopped Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Lightweight Aggregate Concrete and Chopped Polyacrylonitrile Fiber Reinforced Lightweight Aggregate Concrete.

Project description:In this study, an experimental investigation was conducted on the mechanical properties of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) with different chopped fibers, including basalt fiber (BF) and polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF). The LWAC performance was studied in regard to compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and shear strength at age of 28 days. In addition, the oven-dried density and water absorption were measured as well to confirm whether the specimens match the requirement of standard. In total, seven different mixture groups were designed and approximately 104 LWAC samples were tested. The test results showed that the oven-dried densities of the LWAC mixtures were in range of 1.819-1.844 t/m3 which satisfied the definition of LWAC by Chinese Standard. Additionally, water absorption decreased with the increasing of fiber content. The development tendency of the specific strength of LWAC was the same as that of the cube compressive strength. The addition of fibers had a significant effect on reducing water absorption. Adding BF and PANF into concrete had a relatively slight impact on the compressive strength but had an obvious effect on splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and shear strength enhancement, respectively. In that regard, a 1.5% fiber volume fraction of BF and PANF showed the maximum increase in strength. The use of BF and PANF could change the failure morphologies of splitting tensile and flexural destruction but almost had slight impact on the shear failure morphology. The strength enhancement parameter ? was proposed to quantify the improvement effect of fibers on cube compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and shear strength, respectively. And the calculation results showed good agreement with test value.

A New Composite Slab Using Crushed Waste Tires as Fine Aggregate in Self-Compacting Lightweight Aggregate Concrete.

Project description:A composite slab comprised of self-compacting rubber lightweight aggregate concrete (SCRLC) and profiled steel sheeting is a new type of structural element with a series of superior properties. This paper presents an experimental research and finite element analysis (FEA) of the flexural behavior of composite slabs consisting of SCRLC to develop a new floor system. Four composite slabs specimens with different shear spans (450 mm and 800 mm) and SCRLC (0% and 30% in rubber particles substitution ratio) are prepared, and the flexural properties including failure modes, deflection at mid-span, profiled steel sheeting, and concrete surface stain at mid-span and end slippage are investigated by four-point bending tests. The experimental results indicate that applying SCRLC30 in composites slabs will improve the anti-cracking ability under the loading of composite slabs compared with composite slabs consisting of self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete (SCLC). FEM on the flexural properties of SCRLC composites slabs show that the yield load, ultimate load, and deflection corresponding to the yield load and the ultimate load of composite slabs drop as the rubber particles content increases in SCRLC. The variation of SCRLC strength has less impact on the flexural bearing capacity of corresponding composite slabs. Based on the traditional calculated method of the ultimate bending moment of normal concrete (NC) composite slabs, a modified calculated method for the ultimate bending moment of SCRLC composite slabs is proposed.

Flexural and Shear Tests on Reinforced Concrete Bridge Deck Slab Segments with a Textile-Reinforced Concrete Strengthening Layer.

Project description:Many older bridges feature capacity deficiencies. This is mainly due to changes in code provisions which came along with stricter design rules and increasing traffic, leading to higher loads on the structure. To address capacity deficiencies of bridges, refined structural analyses with more detailed design approaches can be applied. If bridge assessment does not provide sufficient capacity, strengthening can be a pertinent solution to extend the bridge's service lifetime. For numerous cases, applying an extra layer of textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) can be a convenient method to achieve the required resistance. Here, carbon fibre-reinforced polymer reinforcement together with a high-performance mortar was used within the scope of developing a strengthening layer for bridge deck slabs, called SMART-DECK. Due to the high tensile strength of the carbon and its resistance to corrosion, a thin layer with high strength and low additional dead load can be realised. While the strengthening effect of TRC for slabs under flexural loading has already been investigated several times, the presented test programme also covered increase in shear capacity, which is the other crucial failure mode to be considered in design. A total of 14 large-scale tests on TRC-strengthened slab segments were tested under static and cyclic loading. The experimental study revealed high increases in capacity for both bending and shear failure.

On the Structural Performance of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Columns with Glass Fiber-Reinforced Composite Bars and Hoops.

Project description:Structural members comprising geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars have not been investigated appropriately for axial compressive loading cases. The present study addresses this knowledge gap by evaluating the structural efficiency of GFRP-reinforced geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GGRAC)-based members subjected to axial compressive loading. A total of nine compressive members (250 mm in cross-section and 1150 mm in height) were constructed to examine the effect of the number of longitudinal GFRP bars and the vertical spacing of transverse GFRP hoops/ties. The experimental results portrayed that the ductility of GGRAC compressive members improved with the reduction in the pitch of GFRP hoops. The axial load-carrying capacity (LCC) of GGRAC compressive members increased by increasing the number of GFRP bars up to eight (corresponding to a reinforcement ratio of 2.11%) while it decreased by using ten longitudinal GFRP bars (corresponding to a reinforcement ratio of 2.65%). Additionally, an empirical model was suggested to predict the axial LCC of GGRAC compressive members based on a large amount of experimental data of similar members. The experimental results and related theoretical predictions substantially prove the applicability and accuracy of the proposed model. The proposed column represents a feasible structural member in terms of material availability and environmental sustainability.

Experimental Study of Flexural Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Beam Strengthened with Prestressed Textile-Reinforced Mortar.

Project description:In this study, nine specimens were experimentally tested to analyze the strengthening efficiency of textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) and the difference in flexural behavior between prestressed and non-prestressed TRM-strengthened reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that TRM strengthening improves the flexural strength of TRM-strengthened reinforced concrete beams with alkali-resistant-(AR-) glass textile as well as that with carbon textile. However, in the case of textile prestressing, the strengthening efficiency for flexural strength of the AR-glass textile was higher than that of the carbon textile. The flexural stiffness of AR-glass textiles increased when prestressing was introduced and the use of carbon textiles can be advantageous to reduce the decreasing ratio of flexural stiffness as the load increased. In the failure mode, textile prestressing prevents the damage of textiles effectively owing to the crack and induces the debonding of the TRM.

Effect of Waste Glass Addition as a Replacement for Fine Aggregate on Properties of Mortar.

Project description:A responsible approach towards sustainable development requires the use of environmentally friendly, low-carbon, and energy-intensive materials. One positive way is to use glass waste as a replacement for fine natural aggregate. For this purpose, the effects of adding glass cullet to the mechanical properties of mortar were carried out. The glass aggregate made from recycled post-consumer waste glass (food, medicine, and cosmetics packaging, including mostly bottles), were used. This experimental work included four different contents of fine glass cullet (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt.% of fine aggregate). The compressive, flexural, and split tensile strengths were evaluated. Moreover, the modulus of elasticity and Poisson coefficient were determined. The addition of glass sand aggregate increases the mechanical properties of mortar. When comparing the strength, the obtained improvement in split tensile strength was the least affected. The obtained effect for the increased analysed properties of the glass sand aggregate content has been rarely reported. Moreover, it was determined that by increasing the recycled glass sand aggregate content, the density of mortar decreased. In addition, the relationships between the properties for mortar containing glass sand aggregate were observed.

Investigation of the effectiveness of CFRP strengthening of concrete made with recycled waste PET fine plastic aggregate.

Project description:In recent decades, several studies have considered the use of plastic waste as a partial substitute for aggregate in green concrete. Such concrete has been limited to non-structural applications due to its low strength. This raises whether such concrete can be enhanced for use in some structural applications. This paper reports an attempt to develop a structural-grade concrete containing plastic waste aggregate with high proportions of substitution and confined with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabrics. Experimental research was conducted involving the casting and testing 54 plain and confined concrete cylinders. A concrete mixture was designed in which the fine aggregate was partially replaced by polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste plastic at ratios of 0%, 25%, and 50%, and with different w/c ratios of 0.40, 0.45, and 0.55. The results show that confinement has a substantial positive effect on the compressive behavior of PET concrete. The enhancement efficiency increases by 8-190%, with higher enhancement levels for higher substitution ratios. Adding one layer of CFRP fabric raises the ultimate strength of samples that have lost compressive strength to a level close to that of unconfined samples not containing PET. This confinement is accompanied by an increase in the slope of the stress-strain curve and greater axial and lateral strain values at failure. For the specimens confined by CFRP fabric, PET aggregate can be used as a partial substitute for sand at a replacement ratio of up to 50% by volume for structural applications. This paper also considers the ability of existing models to predict the strength of confined-PET concrete circular cross-sections by comparing model predictions with experimental results. The strength of confined PET concrete elements can't be accurately predicted by any of the models that are already out there. It's important to come up with a new model for these elements.
