Project description:Natural gas hydrates are icy crystalline materials that contain hydrocarbons, which are the primary energy source for this civilization. The abundance of naturally occurring gas hydrates leads to a growing interest in exploitation. Despite their potential as energy resources and in industrial applications, there is insufficient understanding of hydrate kinetics, which hinders the utilization of these invaluable resources. Perturbation of liquid water structure by solutes has been proposed to be a key process in hydrate inhibition, but this hypothesis remains unproven. Here, we report the direct observation of the perturbation of the liquid water structure induced by amino acids using polarized Raman spectroscopy, and its influence on gas hydrate nucleation and growth kinetics. Amino acids with hydrophilic and/or electrically charged side chains disrupted the water structure and thus provided effective hydrate inhibition. The strong correlation between the extent of perturbation by amino acids and their inhibition performance constitutes convincing evidence for the perturbation inhibition mechanism. The present findings bring the practical applications of gas hydrates significantly closer, and provide a new perspective on the freezing and melting phenomena of naturally occurring gas hydrates.

Project description:Atoms and molecules <0.9 nm in diameter can be incorporated in the cages formed by hydrogen-bonded water molecules making up the crystalline solid clathrate hydrates. For these materials crystallographic structures generally fall into 3 categories, which are 2 cubic forms and a hexagonal form. A unique clathrate hydrate structure, previously known only hypothetically, has been synthesized at high pressure and recovered at 77 K and ambient pressure in these experiments. These samples contain Xe as a guest atom and the details of this previously unobserved structure are described here, most notably the host-guest ratio is similar to the cubic Xe clathrate starting material. After pressure quench recovery to 1 atmosphere the structure shows considerable metastability with increasing temperature (T <160 K) before reverting back to the cubic form. This evidence of structural complexity in compositionally similar clathrate compounds indicates that the reaction path may be an important determinant of the structure, and impacts upon the structures that might be encountered in nature.

Project description:Gas hydrates could show an unexpected high stability at conditions out of thermodynamic equilibrium, which is called the self-preservation effect. The mechanism of the effect for methane hydrates is here investigated via molecular dynamics simulations, in which an NVT/E method is introduced to represent different levels of heat transfer resistance. Our simulations suggest a coupling between the mass transfer resistance and heat transfer resistance as the driving mechanism for self-preservation effect. We found that the hydrate is initially melted from the interface, and then a solid-like water layer with temperature-dependent structures is formed next to the hydrate interface that exhibits fractal feature, followed by an increase of mass transfer resistance for the diffusion of methane from hydrate region. Furthermore, our results indicate that heat transfer resistance is a more fundamental factor, since it facilitates the formation of the solid-like layer and hence inhibits the further dissociation of the hydrates. The self-preservation effect is found to be enhanced with the increase of pressure and particularly the decrease of temperature. Kinetic equations based on heat balance calculations is also developed to describe the self-preservation effect, which reproduces our simulation results well and provides an association between microscopic and macroscopic properties.

Project description:Gas hydrate technology holds great potential in energy and environmental fields, and achieving efficient gas hydrate formation is critical for its industrial application. Graphene is a novel carbon-based nanostructured material with excellent thermal conductivity and a large specific surface area. Therefore, the use of graphene-based materials for the promotion of gas hydrate formation might be feasible and has aroused a lot of interests. Accordingly, to evaluate the current research on graphene-based promotion of gas hydrate formation, this work presents a review of existing studies involving graphene-based promoters of gas hydrate formation. Here, the studies applying various types of graphene-based promoters for gas hydrate formation are listed and detailed, the peculiar properties of graphene-based promoters are discussed, and the promotion mechanisms are analyzed. Through this review, comprehensive insight into graphene-based promotion of gas hydrate formation can be obtained, which can guide the design and applications of novel graphene-based promoters and might contribute to achieving efficient gas hydrate formation.

Project description:Flotation separation, which is the most important mineral beneficiation technique, is dependent on gas dispersion (hydrodynamic conditions). Thus, many investigations have focused on the precise determination of hydrodynamic conditions such as Reynolds number of the bubbles, bubble velocity, and bubble diameter. However, few studies have examined their relationships with pressure fluctuations in a column flotation. This study introduced the differential pressure fluctuations as an actual variable that could be considered to determine the collection zone's hydrodynamic conditions in a cyclonic microbubble flotation column. In general, the outcomes indicated that superficial gas velocity had the most substantial relationship with the differential pressure fluctuations among other flotation factors (such as pump speed, superficial gas velocity, superficial water velocity, and frother dosage). Furthermore, a high coefficient of determination (R 2 > 0.77) for the equation generated to assess the relationships demonstrated that differential pressure fluctuations could be used as a promising tool to determine the hydrodynamic parameters' characteristics in the flotation columns.

Project description:Natural gas hydrates are solid hydrogen-bonded water crystals containing small molecular gases. The amount of natural gas stored as hydrates in permafrost and ocean sediments is twice that of all other fossil fuels combined. However, hydrate blockages also hinder oil/gas pipeline transportation, and, despite their huge potential as energy sources, our insufficient understanding of hydrates has limited their extraction. Here, we report how the presence of amino acids in water induces changes in its structure and thus interrupts the formation of methane and natural gas hydrates. The perturbation of the structure of water by amino acids and the resulting selective inhibition of hydrate cage formation were observed directly. A strong correlation was found between the inhibition efficiencies of amino acids and their physicochemical properties, which demonstrates the importance of their direct interactions with water and the resulting dissolution environment. The inhibition of methane and natural gas hydrate formation by amino acids has the potential to be highly beneficial in practical applications such as hydrate exploitation, oil/gas transportation, and flow assurance. Further, the interactions between amino acids and water are essential to the equilibria and dynamics of many physical, chemical, biological, and environmental processes.

Project description:The bioindication of oil and gas fields is a field of geomicrobiology that is mainly devoted to the detection of hydrocarbon-oxidizing microbial indicator species or functional genes in total DNA. However, it appears promising to use the physiological properties of microorganisms detection deposit type of hydrocarbons, in particular their ability to oxidize hydrocarbons under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In this study, the most promising approach in this area was the method used for assessing the anaerobic degradation of hydrocarbons. When comparing molecular genetics and cultured methods of bioindication, it can be concluded that molecular biomarkers of functional genes for the anaerobic destruction of hydrocarbons (masD) make it possible to separate areas with traditional and gas-hydrate types of deposits. Using cultured methods, we found that representatives of the Nocardiaceae family of the phylum Actinomycetota were tied to the areas where gas hydrates were found. The ability of aerobic and facultative anaerobic hydrocarbon-oxidizing microorganisms to anaerobically utilize hydrocarbons was determined with cultured methods. For the first time, this ability was revealed for the genera Stenotrophomonas, Psychrobacter, Micrococcus and Peribacillus. The wide distribution of this ability that we found in strains isolated from both study regions suggests its prominent role in the destruction of hydrocarbons in marine sediments.

Project description:Natural gas hydrate is a promising future energy source, but it also poses a huge threat to oil and gas production due to its ability to deposit within and block pipelines. Understanding the atomistic mechanisms of adhesion between the hydrate and solid surfaces and elucidating its underlying key determining factors can shed light on the fundamentals of novel antihydrate materials design. In this study, large-scale molecular simulations are employed to investigate the hydrate adhesion on solid surfaces, especially with focuses on the atomistic structures of intermediate layer and their influences on the adhesion. The results show that the structure of the intermediate layer formed between hydrate and solid surface is a competitive equilibrium of induced growth from both sides, and is regulated by the content of guest molecules. By comparing the fracture behaviors of the hydrate-solid surface system with different intermediate structures, it is found that both the lattice areal density of water structure and the adsorption of guest molecules on the interface together determine the adhesion strength. Based on the analysis of the adhesion strength distribution, we have also revealed the origins of the drastic difference in adhesion among different water structures such as ice and hydrate. Our simulation indicates that ice-adhesion strength is approximately five times that of lowest hydrate adhesion strength. This finding is surprisingly consistent with the available experimental results.

Project description:Large amounts of methane are stored in continental margins as gas hydrates. They are stable under high pressure and low, but react sensitively to environmental changes. Bottom water temperature and sea level changes were considered as main contributors to gas hydrate dynamics after the last glaciation. However, here we show with numerical simulations that pulses of increased sedimentation dominantly controlled hydrate stability during the end of the last glaciation offshore mid-Norway. Sedimentation pulses triggered widespread gas hydrate dissociation and explains the formation of ubiquitous blowout pipes in water depths of 600 to 800 m. Maximum gas hydrate dissociation correlates spatially and temporally with the formation or reactivation of pockmarks, which is constrained by radiocarbon dating of Isorropodon nyeggaensis bivalve shells. Our results highlight that rapid changes of sedimentation can have a strong impact on gas hydrate systems affecting fluid flow and gas seepage activity, slope stability and the carbon cycle.

Project description:The reason that the stoichiometry of gas to water in artificial gas hydrates formed on porous materials is much higher than that in nature is still ambiguous. Fortunately, based on our experimental thermodynamic and kinetic study on the gas hydrate formation behavior with classic ordered mesoporous carbon CMK-3 and irregular porous activated carbon combined with density functional theory calculations, we discover a microscopic pathway of the gas hydrate formation on porous materials. Two interesting processes including (I) the replacement of water adsorbed on the carbon surface by gas and (II) further replacement of water in the pore by gas accompanied with the gas condensation in the pore and growth of gas hydrate crystals out of the pore were deduced. As a result, a great enhancement of the selectivity and regeneration for gas separation was achieved by controlling the gas hydrate formation behavior accurately.
