Cationic nickel metal-organic frameworks for adsorption of negatively charged dye molecules.

ABSTRACT: Industrial dye effluents with low biodegradability are highly toxic and carcinogenic on both human and aquatic lives, thus they are detrimental to the biodiversity of environment. Herein, this data set presents the potential of cationic Nickel based MOFs in the adsorption of charged and neutral dye molecules. Data set include a concise description of experimental conditions for the synthesis of imidazolium ligands, 1,3-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)imidazolium chloride (H₂L⁺Cl^-) and 1,3-bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)imidazolium chloride (H₄L⁺Cl^-), and MOFs. The data show that the two Nickel MOFs, 1 and 2, synthesized from imidazolium ligands are cationic frameworks. The adsorption and analysis data show that the cationic MOFs exhibit efficient adsorptive removal capacity for positively charged dyes, adsorbing up to 81.08% and 98.65% of Methyl orange and Congo red, respectively.

Adsorption of Amyloid Beta Peptide by Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are capable of adsorbing a wide range of molecules. In addition to the more commonly investigated small molecules, researchers have demonstrated that MOFs adsorb much larger molecules, such as proteins and peptides. We have investigated whether MOFs are capable of adsorbing amyloid beta peptide. Amyloid beta plays a pivotal role in the progression of Alzheimer's disease because individual copies of the peptides can aggregate, forming neurotoxic oligomers and the amyloid plaques found in brains of Alzheimer's patients. After synthesizing a number of commonly studied MOFs, their adsorption capabilities were tested. We found that the MOFs tested readily adsorbed small amounts of amyloid beta (as determined by gel electrophoresis). It was determined that in most cases, adsorption occurs rapidly, with complete adsorption within minutes of incubation. Overall adsorption capacity was found to vary between different MOFs as well. Once adsorbed, amyloid beta peptide can subsequently be eluted from some MOFs by treatment with acetonitrile/water solutions, though retention strength varied between different MOFs. In some cases, MOFs that showed complete adsorption also saw high levels of peptide elution, but others showed little to no elution of the peptide. Together these data can help us begin to understand the interactions between amyloid beta and MOFs.

Adsorption Contraction Mechanics: Understanding Breathing Energetics in Isoreticular Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:A highly porous metal-organic framework DUT-48, isoreticular to DUT-49, is reported with a high surface area of 4560 m2·g-1 and methane storage capacity up to 0.27 g·g-1 (164 cm3·cm-3) at 6.5 MPa and 298 K. The flexibility of DUT-48 and DUT-49 under external and internal (adsorption-induced) pressure is analyzed and rationalized using a combination of advanced experimental and computational techniques. While both networks undergo a contraction by mechanical pressure, only DUT-49 shows adsorption-induced structural transitions and negative gas adsorption of n-butane and nitrogen. This adsorption behavior was analyzed by microcalorimetry measurements and molecular simulations to provide an explanation for the lack of adsorption-induced breathing in DUT-48. It was revealed that for DUT-48, a significantly lower adsorption enthalpy difference and a higher framework stiffness prevent adsorption-induced structural transitions and negative gas adsorption. The mechanical behavior of both DUT-48 and DUT-49 was further analyzed by mercury porosimetry experiments and molecular simulations. Both materials exhibit large volume changes under hydrostatic compression, demonstrating noteworthy potential as shock absorbers with unprecedented high work energies.

Modelling drug adsorption in metal-organic frameworks: the role of solvent.

Project description:Solvent plays a key role in biological functions, catalysis, and drug delivery. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their tunable functionalities, porosities and surface areas have been recently used as drug delivery vehicles. To investigate the effect of solvent on drug adsorption in MOFs, we have performed integrated computational and experimental studies in selected biocompatible MOFs, specifically, UiO-AZB, HKUST-1 (or CuBTC) and NH2-MIL-53(Al). The adsorption of three drugs, namely, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), ibuprofen (IBU), and hydroxyurea (HU) were performed in the presence and absence of the ethanol. Our computational predictions, at 1 atmospheric pressure, showed a reasonable agreement with experimental studies performed in the presence of ethanol. We find that in the presence of ethanol the drug molecules were adsorbed at the interface of solvent and MOFs. Moreover, the computationally calculated adsorption isotherms suggested that the drug adsorption was driven by electrostatic interactions at lower pressures (<10-4 Pa). Our computational predictions in the absence of ethanol were higher compared to those in the presence of ethanol. The MOF-adsorbate interaction (U HA) energy decreased with decrease in the size of a drug molecule in all three MOFs at all simulated pressures. At high pressure the interaction energy increases with increase in the MOFs pore size as the number of molecules adsorbed increases. Thus, our research shows the important role played by solvent in drug adsorption and suggests that it is critical to consider solvent while performing computational studies.

Cooperative adsorption of carbon disulfide in diamine-appended metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Over one million tons of CS2 are produced annually, and emissions of this volatile and toxic liquid, known to generate acid rain, remain poorly controlled. As such, materials capable of reversibly capturing this commodity chemical in an energy-efficient manner are of interest. Recently, we detailed diamine-appended metal-organic frameworks capable of selectively capturing CO2 through a cooperative insertion mechanism that promotes efficient adsorption-desorption cycling. We therefore sought to explore the ability of these materials to capture CS2 through a similar mechanism. Employing crystallography, spectroscopy, and gas adsorption analysis, we demonstrate that CS2 is indeed cooperatively adsorbed in N,N-dimethylethylenediamine-appended M2(dobpdc) (M = Mg, Mn, Zn; dobpdc4- = 4,4'-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3'-dicarboxylate), via the formation of electrostatically paired ammonium dithiocarbamate chains. In the weakly thiophilic Mg congener, chemisorption is cleanly reversible with mild thermal input. This work demonstrates that the cooperative insertion mechanism can be generalized to other high-impact target molecules.

Excavating hidden adsorption sites in metal-organic frameworks using rational defect engineering.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks are known to contain defects within their crystalline structures. Successful engineering of these defects can lead to modifications in material properties that can potentially improve the performance of many existing frameworks. Herein, we report the high-throughput computational screening of a large experimental metal-organic framework database to identify 13 frameworks that show significantly improved methane storage capacities with linker vacancy defects. The candidates are first identified by focusing on structures with methane-inaccessible pores blocked away from the main adsorption channels. Then, organic linkers of the candidate structures are judiciously replaced with appropriate modulators to emulate the presence of linker vacancies, resulting in the integration and utilization of the previously inaccessible pores. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of defective candidate frameworks show significant enhancements in methane storage capacities, highlighting that rational defect engineering can be an effective method to significantly improve the performance of the existing metal-organic frameworks.

Magnetic sustentation as an adsorption characterization technique for paramagnetic metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Nowadays, there are many reliable characterization techniques for the study of adsorption properties in gas phase. However, the techniques available for the study of adsorption processes in solution, rely on indirect characterization techniques that measure the adsorbate concentration remaining in solution. In this work, we present a sensing method based on the magnetic properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing paramagnetic metal centres, which stands out for the rapidity, low cost and in situ direct measurement of the incorporated adsorbate within the porous material. To illustrate this sensing technique, the adsorption in solution of four MOFs have been characterized: MIL-88A(Fe), MOF-74(Cu, Co) and ZIF-67(Co). Our simple and efficient method allows the direct determination of the adsorbed mass, as well as the measurement of adsorption isotherm curves, which we hope will greatly advance the study of adsorption processes in solution, since this method is independent of the chemical nature of the adsorbate that often makes its quantification difficult.

Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER).

Project description:The exploration of earth-abundant electrocatalysts with high performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is eminently desirable and remains a significant challenge. The composite of the metal-organic framework (MOF) Ni10Co-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) and the highly conductive carbon material ketjenblack (KB) could be easily obtained from the MOF synthesis in the presence of KB in a one-step solvothermal reaction. The composite and the pristine MOF perform better than commercially available Ni/NiO nanoparticles under the same conditions for the OER. Activation of the nickel-cobalt clusters from the MOF can be seen under the applied anodic potential, which steadily boosts the OER performance. Ni10Co-BTC and Ni10Co-BTC/KB are used as sacrificial agents and undergo structural changes during electrochemical measurements, the stabilized materials show good OER performances.

Modeling adsorption properties of structurally deformed metal-organic frameworks using structure-property map.

Project description:Structural deformation and collapse in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can lead to loss of long-range order, making it a challenge to model these amorphous materials using conventional computational methods. In this work, we show that a structure-property map consisting of simulated data for crystalline MOFs can be used to indirectly obtain adsorption properties of structurally deformed MOFs. The structure-property map (with dimensions such as Henry coefficient, heat of adsorption, and pore volume) was constructed using a large data set of over 12000 crystalline MOFs from molecular simulations. By mapping the experimental data points of deformed SNU-200, MOF-5, and Ni-MOF-74 onto this structure-property map, we show that the experimentally deformed MOFs share similar adsorption properties with their nearest neighbor crystalline structures. Once the nearest neighbor crystalline MOFs for a deformed MOF are selected from a structure-property map at a specific condition, then the adsorption properties of these MOFs can be successfully transformed onto the degraded MOFs, leading to a new way to obtain properties of materials whose structural information is lost.

Characterization of Adsorption Enthalpy of Novel Water-Stable Zeolites and Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Water adsorption is becoming increasingly important for many applications including thermal energy storage, desalination, and water harvesting. To develop such applications, it is essential to understand both adsorbent-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions, and also the energy required for adsorption/desorption processes of porous material-adsorbate systems, such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this study, we present a technique to characterize the enthalpy of adsorption/desorption of zeolites and MOF-801 with water as an adsorbate by conducting desorption experiments with conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). With this method, the enthalpies of adsorption of previously uncharacterized adsorbents were estimated as a function of both uptake and temperature. Our characterizations indicate that the adsorption enthalpies of type I zeolites can increase to greater than twice the latent heat whereas adsorption enthalpies of MOF-801 are nearly constant for a wide range of vapor uptakes.

Use of the PIXEL method to investigate gas adsorption in metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:PIXEL has been used to perform calculations of adsorbate-adsorbent interaction energies between a range of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and simple guest molecules. Interactions have been calculated for adsorption between MOF-5 and Ar, H2, and N2; Zn2(BDC)2(TED) (BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, TED = triethylenediamine) and H2; and HKUST-1 and CO2. The locations of the adsorption sites and the calculated energies, which show differences in the Coulombic or dispersion characteristic of the interaction, compare favourably to experimental data and literature energy values calculated using density functional theory.
