Thermal Decomposition Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with Diminished Magnetic Dead Layer by Controlled Addition of Oxygen.

ABSTRACT: Decades of research focused on size and shape control of iron oxide nanoparticles have led to methods of synthesis that afford excellent control over physical size and shape but comparatively poor control over magnetic properties. Popular synthesis methods based on thermal decomposition of organometallic precursors in the absence of oxygen have yielded particles with mixed iron oxide phases, crystal defects, and poorer than expected magnetic properties, including the existence of a thick "magnetically dead layer" experimentally evidenced by a magnetic diameter significantly smaller than the physical diameter. Here, we show how single-crystalline iron oxide nanoparticles with few defects and similar physical and magetic diameter distributions can be obtained by introducing molecular oxygen as one of the reactive species in the thermal decomposition synthesis. This is achieved without the need for any postsynthesis oxidation or thermal annealing. These results address a significant challenge in the synthesis of nanoparticles with predictable magnetic properties and could lead to advances in applications of magnetic nanoparticles.

Project description:The terpolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO?), propylene oxide (PO), and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) were performed by both random polymerization and block polymerization to synthesize the random poly (propylene cyclohexene carbonate) (PPCHC), di-block polymers of poly (propylene carbonate?cyclohexyl carbonate) (PPC-PCHC), and tri-block polymers of poly (cyclohexyl carbonate?propylene carbonate?cyclohexyl carbonate) (PCHC-PPC-PCHC). The kinetics of the thermal degradation of the terpolymers was investigated by the multiple heating rate method (Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) method), the single heating rate method (Coats-Redfern method), and the Isoconversional kinetic analysis method proposed by Vyazovkin with the data from thermogravimetric analysis under dynamic conditions. The values of ln k vs. T-1 for the thermal decomposition of four polymers demonstrate the thermal stability of PPC and PPC-PCHC are poorer than PPCHC and PCHC-PPC-PCHC. In addition, for PPCHC and PCHC-PPC-PCHC, there is an intersection between the two rate constant lines, which means that, for thermal stability of PPCHC, it is more stable than PCHC-PPC-PCHC at the temperature less than 309 °C and less stable when the decomposed temperature is more than 309 °C. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry (TG/FTIR) techniques were applied to investigate the thermal degradation behavior of the polymers. The results showed that unzipping was the main degradation mechanism of all polymers so the final pyrolysates were cyclic propylene carbonate and cyclic cyclohexene carbonate. For the block copolymers, the main chain scission reaction first occurs at PC-PC linkages initiating an unzipping reaction of PPC chain and then, at CHC?CHC linkages, initiating an unzipping reaction of the PCHC chain. That is why the T-5% of di-block and tri-block polymers were not much higher than that of PPC while two maximum decomposition temperatures were observed for both the block copolymer and the second one were much higher than that of PPC. For PPCHC, the random arranged bulky cyclohexane groups in the polymer chain can effectively suppress the backbiting process and retard the unzipping reaction. Thus, it exhibited much higher T-5% than that of PPC and block copolymers.

Project description:Oxygen stable isotopes in uranium oxides processed through the nuclear fuel cycle may have the potential to provide information about a material's origin and processing history. However, a more thorough understanding of the fractionating processes governing the formation of signatures in real-world samples is still needed. In this study, laboratory synthesis of uranium oxides modeled after industrial nuclear fuel fabrication was performed to follow the isotope fractionation during thermal decomposition and reduction of ammonium diuranate (ADU). Synthesis of ADU occurred using a gaseous NH3 route, followed by thermal decomposition in a dry nitrogen atmosphere at 400, 600, and 800 °C. The kinetic impact of heating ramp rates on isotope effects was explored by ramping to each decomposition temperature at 2, 20, and 200 °C min-1. In addition, ADU was reduced using direct (ramped to 600 °C in a hydrogen atmosphere) and indirect (thermally decomposed to U3O8 at 600 °C, then exposed to a hydrogen atmosphere) routes. The bulk oxygen isotope composition of ADU (δ18O = -16 ± 1‰) was very closely related to precipitation water (δ18O = -15.6‰). The solid products of thermal decomposition using ramp rates of 2 and 20 °C min-1 had statistically indistinguishable oxygen isotope compositions at each decomposition temperature, with increasing δ18O values in the transition from ADU to UO3 at 400 °C (δ18OUO3 - δ18OADU = 12.3‰) and the transition from UO3 to U3O8 at 600 °C (δ18OU3O8 - δ18OUO3 = 2.8‰). An enrichment of 18O attributable to water volatilization was observed in the low temperature (400 °C) product of thermal decomposition using a 200 °C min-1 ramp rate (δ18OUO3 - δ18OADU = 9.2‰). Above 400 °C, no additional fractionation was observed as UO3 decomposed to U3O8 with the rapid heating rate. Indirect reduction of ADU produced UO2 with a δ18O value 19.1‰ greater than the precipitate and 4.0‰ greater than the intermediate U3O8. Direct reduction of ADU at 600 °C in a hydrogen atmosphere resulted in the production of U4O9 with a δ18O value 17.1‰ greater than the precipitate. Except when a 200 °C min-1 ramp rate is employed, the results of both thermal decomposition and reduction show a consistent preferential enrichment of 18O as oxygen is removed from the original precipitate. Hence, the calcination and reduction reactions leading to the production of UO2 will yield unique oxygen isotope fractionations based on process parameters including heating rate and decomposition temperature.
