Heterobimetallic Pd-K carbene complexes via one-electron reductions of palladium radical carbenes.

ABSTRACT: Heterobimetallic Pd-K carbenes featuring Pd-C_carbene-K moieties were synthesized via an unprecedented sequential substitution/reduction reaction from a radical precursor, [{PC?(sp²)P} ^tBuPdI] ([PC(sp²)P] ^tBu = bis[2-(di-iso-propylphosphino)-4-tert-butylphenyl]methylene). Polymeric structures were observed in the solid state for the heterobimetallic compounds that can be interrupted in the presence of a donor solvent.

Heterobimetallic Coinage Metal-Ruthenium Complexes Supported by Anionic N-Heterocyclic Carbenes.

Project description:The lithium complexes [(WCA-NHC)Li(toluene)] of anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes with a weakly coordinating borate moiety (WCA-NHC, WCA=B(C6 F5 )3 , NHC=IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) were used for the preparation of silver(I) or copper(I) WCA-NHC complexes. While the reactions in THF with AgCl or CuCl afforded anionic mono- and dicarbene complexes with solvated lithium counterions [Li(THF)n ]+ (n=3, 4), the reactions in toluene proceeded with elimination of LiCl and formation of the neutral phosphine and arene complexes [(WCA-NHC)M(PPh3 )] and [(WCA-NHC)M(η2 -toluene)] (M=Ag, Cu). The latter were used for the preparation of chlorido- and iodido-bridged heterobimetallic Ag/Ru and Cu/Ru complexes [(WCA-NHC)M(μ-X)2 Ru(PPh3 )(η6 -p-cymene)] (M=Ag, Cu, X=Cl; M=Ag, X=I). Surprisingly, these complexes resisted the elimination of CuCl, AgCl, or AgI, precluding WCA-NHC transmetalation.

Palladium carbene complexes as persistent radicals.

Project description:A series of palladium(ii) radical carbene complexes, [PC˙(sp2)P]PdI, [PC˙(sp2)P]PdBr, and [PC˙(sp2)P]PdCl (PC(sp3)H2P = bis[2-(di-iso-propylphosphino)-phenyl]methane), is described. Compound [PC˙(sp2)P]PdI dimerizes to {[PC(sp2)P]PdI}2 in the solid state, akin to the formation of Gomberg's dimer. While the bromo and the iodo derivatives could be obtained from the oxidation of [PC(sp2)P]Pd(PMe3) by the respective dihalogens, a halogen transfer reaction from CH2Cl2 was used for the formation of [PC˙(sp2)P]PdCl. The halogen transfer from CH2X2 (X = Cl, Br, I) could be used to obtain all three radical carbene palladium complexes and also allowed the isolation of [PC(CH2)P]Pd(PMe3), which is the result of methylene group transfer from CH2X2. Compound [PC(CH2)P]Pd(PMe3) was independently synthesized from [PC(CH3)HP]PdCl2, which contains a supporting ligand analogous to that of the radical carbene complexes but has one of the hydrogen atoms replaced by a methyl group. All three carbene radical species abstract a hydrogen from 9,10-dihydroanthracene or n Bu3SnH.

Distinct Palladium(II) Carbene Complexes Supported by Six-Membered 1,3-Disubstituted Permidin-2-ylidene, Six-Membered N-Heterocyclic Carbenes.

Project description:The first synthesis, isolation, and characterization of permidin-2-ylidene complexes of Pd(II) is reported with entry resulting from either a direct reaction with isolable six-membered N-heterocyclic carbene or from the enetetramine, arising from dimerization of the carbene. Furthermore, a simplified method to prepare N,N'-disubstituted perimidinium bromide salts, precursors to 1,3-disubstituted perimidin-2-ylidene, was achieved using ammonium bromide as a source of weak acid. Through synthesis and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis of a carbene-phosphinidine adduct, an interrogation of the fundamental π-bonding ability of 1,3-diisopropylperimidin-2-ylidene revealed this interaction to be weak and of a similar order to unsaturated imidazol-2-ylidenes.

Isolation of singlet carbene derived 2-phospha-1,3-butadienes and their sequential one-electron oxidation to radical cations and dications.

Project description:A synthetic strategy for the 2-phospha-1,3-butadiene derivatives [{(IPr)C(Ph)}P(cAACMe)] (3a) and [{(IPr)C(Ph)}P(cAACCy)] (3b) (IPr = C{(NDipp)CH}2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; cAACMe = C{(NDipp)CMe2CH2CMe2}; cAACCy = C{(NDipp)CMe2CH2C(Cy)}, Cy = cyclohexyl) containing a C[double bond, length as m-dash]C-P[double bond, length as m-dash]C framework has been established. Compounds 3a and 3b have a remarkably small HOMO-LUMO energy gap (3a: 5.09; 3b: 5.05 eV) with a very high-lying HOMO (-4.95 eV for each). Consequently, 3a and 3b readily undergo one-electron oxidation with the mild oxidizing agent GaCl3 to afford radical cations [{(IPr)C(Ph)}P(cAACR)]GaCl4 (R = Me 4a, Cy 4b) as crystalline solids. The main UV-vis absorption band for 4a and 4b is red-shifted with respect to that of 3a and 3b, which is associated with the SOMO related transitions. The EPR spectra of compounds 4a and 4b each exhibit a doublet due to coupling of the unpaired electron with the 31P nucleus. Further one-electron removal from the radical cations 4a and 4b is also feasible with GaCl3, affording the dications [{(IPr)C(Ph)}P(cAACR)](GaCl4)2 (R = Me 5a, Cy 5b) as yellow crystals. The molecular structures of compounds 3-5 have been determined by X-ray diffraction and analyzed by DFT calculations.

Project description:Regioselective methods for allene hydrosilylation have been developed, with regioselectivity being governed primarily by the choice of metal. Alkenylsilanes are produced via nickel catalysis with larger N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, and allylsilanes are produced via palladium catalysis with smaller NHC ligands. These complementary methods allow either regioisomeric product to be obtained with exceptional regiocontrol.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Organocatalysis: With or Without Carbenes?

Project description:In this work the mechanism of the aldehyde umpolung reactions, catalyzed by azolium cations in the presence of bases, was studied through computational methods. Next to the mechanism established by Breslow in the 1950s that takes effect through the formation of a free carbene, we have suggested that these processes can follow a concerted asynchronous path, in which the azolium cation directly reacts with the substrate, avoiding the formation of the carbene intermediate. We hereby show that substituting the azolium cation, and varying the base or the substrate do not affect the preference for the concerted reaction mechanism. The concerted path was found to exhibit low barriers also for the reactions of thiamine with model substrates, showing that this path might have biological relevance. The dominance of the concerted mechanism can be explained through the specific structure of the key transition state, avoiding the liberation of the highly reactive, and thus unstable carbene lone pair, whereas activating the substrate through hydrogen-bonding interactions. Polar and hydrogen-bonding solvents, as well as the presence of the counterions of the azolium salts facilitate the reaction through carbenes, bringing the barriers of the two reaction mechanisms closer, in many cases making the concerted path less favorable. Thus, our data show that by choosing the exact components in a reaction, the mechanism can be switched to occur with or without carbenes.

Possible Synthetic Approaches for Heterobimetallic Complexes by Using nNHC/tzNHC Heteroditopic Carbene Ligands.

Project description:The synthesis of heterobimetallic complexes remains a synthetic challenge in the field of organometallic chemistry. A possible approach in this regard might be the use of a bidentate heteroditopic bis(carbene) ligand that combines an imidazol-2-ylidene (nNHC) with a 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) connected by an organic spacer. The optimized strategy to heterobimetallic complexes with this type of ligand involves a 3-step procedure: (i) Coordination of the nNHC, functionalized with a 1,2,3-triazole ring, to a metal center; (ii) formation of the triazolium ring by alkylation of the triazole N-3; (iii) deprotonation of the tzNHC precursor and coordination of the second metal center. Following this procedure, a novel Au(I)-Ag(I) dinuclear complex was isolated and its properties were compared to the analogous homobimetallic Ag(I)-Ag(I) and Au(I)-Au(I) complexes. The study was completed by the determination of the molecular structures of some synthetic intermediates.

Gauging Radical Stabilization with Carbenes.

Project description:Carbenes, including N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, are used extensively to stabilize open-shell transition metal complexes and organic radicals. Yet, it remains unknown, which carbene stabilizes a radical well and, thus, how to design radical-stabilizing C-donor ligands. With the large variety of C-donor ligands experimentally investigated and their electronic properties established, we report herein their radical-stabilizing effect. We show that radical stabilization can be understood by a captodative frontier orbital description involving π-donation to- and π-donation from the carbenes. This picture sheds a new perspective on NHC chemistry, where π-donor effects usually are assumed to be negligible. Further, it allows for the intuitive prediction of the thermodynamic stability of covalent radicals of main group- and transition metal carbene complexes, and the quantification of redox non-innocence.

Reversible Single-Electron-Transfer to Oxygen in a Stable N-Heterocyclic Carbene Palladium(I) Metalloradical.

Project description:The chemical and electrochemical one-electron oxidation of [Pd(IPr)2] (1) leads to the formation of mononuclear palladium(I) complex [Pd(IPr)2][PF6] (2). This bench-stable metalloradical has been fully characterized and its structure confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. EPR and DFT studies confirm the localization of the unpaired electron onto the metal center. Low temperature NMR and EPR measurements reveal the ability of complex 2 to reversibly coordinate and reduce the dioxygen molecule, leading to the formation of a three-coordinate complex, [PdII(IPr)2(η1-O2)]+ (4), in which the unpaired electron has been transferred to the superoxido ligand.
