Statistical analysis and estimation of the regional trend of aerosol size over the Arabian Gulf Region during 2002-2016.

ABSTRACT: In this article, we present the results of the regional estimation of the evolution of monthly mean aerosol size over the Arabian Gulf Region, based on the data collected during the period July 2002 - September 2016. The dataset used is complete, without missing values. Two methods are introduced for this purpose. The first one is based on the partition of the regional series in sub-series and the selection of the most representative one for fitting the regional trend. The second one is a version of the first method, combined with the k-means clustering algorithm. Comparison of their performances is also provided. The study proves that both methods give a very good estimation of the evolution of the aerosol size in the Arabian Gulf Region in the study period.

Increasing preoperative body size in breast cancer patients between 2002 and 2016: implications for prognosis.

Project description:Overweight and obesity are increasing worldwide, but the extent in breast cancer patients is unknown. The two aims were to study secular trends in preoperative body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and breast volume and their impacts on clinical outcome. BMI, waist circumference, and breast volume were measured preoperatively in 24-99-year-old primary breast cancer patients (n = 640) in Sweden 2002-2016. The measurements were analyzed alone and combined in relation to recurrence and overall survival (OS). BMI, waist circumference, and breast volume increased 2002-2016 (ptrends < 0.0001). Of these, a breast volume ≥ 850 mL was associated with the strongest recurrence-risk (adjusted hazard ratio [adjHR] 1.67; 95% CI 1.17-2.39), especially combined with waist circumference ≥ 80 cm (adjHR 2.07; 95% CI 1.25-3.44), while BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 or large waist circumference conferred almost a twofold risk for death (both Log-Rank p ≤ 0.0001). Chemotherapy seemed to counteract the negative impact of a high BMI or large waist circumference on OS. Large breast volume was the strongest predictor for recurrence in all treatment groups. In conclusion, preoperative BMI, waist circumference, and breast volume increased between 2002 and 2016. Larger body size negatively impacted breast cancer-free interval and OS. If confirmed, body measurements may help select patients requiring more individualized treatment.

Familial Hypercholesterolemia in the Arabian Gulf Region: Clinical results of the Gulf FH Registry.

Project description:Background and aimsFamilial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common autosomal dominant disorder that can result in premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Limited data are available worldwide about the prevalence and management of FH. Here, we aimed to estimate the prevalence and management of patients with FH in five Arabian Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain).MethodsThe multicentre, multinational Gulf FH registry included adults (≥18 years old) recruited from outpatient clinics in 14 tertiary-care centres across five Arabian Gulf countries over the last five years. The Gulf FH registry had four phases: 1- screening, 2- classification based on the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network, 3- genetic testing, and 4- follow-up.ResultsAmong 34,366 screened patient records, 3713 patients had suspected FH (mean age: 49±15 years; 52% women) and 306 patients had definite or probable FH. Thus, the estimated FH prevalence was 0.9% (1:112). Treatments included high-intensity statin therapy (34%), ezetimibe (10%), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors (0.4%). Targets for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were achieved by 12% and 30%, respectively, of patients at high ASCVD risk, and by 3% and 6%, respectively, of patients at very high ASCVD risk (p <0.001; for both comparisons).ConclusionsThis snap-shot study was the first to show the high estimated prevalence of FH in the Arabian Gulf region (about 3-fold the estimated prevalence worldwide), and is a "call-to-action" for further confirmation in future population studies. The small proportions of patients that achieved target LDL-C values implied that health care policies need to implement nation-wide screening, raise FH awareness, and improve management strategies for FH.

[Utilization of palliative care at the end of life in Germany: temporal trend (2016-2019) and regional variability].

Project description:BackgroundIn Germany, palliative care (PC) is provided on a homecare, inpatient, general, and specialized basis. Since little is currently known about the temporal course and regional differences in the forms of care, the present study was aimed to investigate this.MethodIn a retrospective routine data study with 417,405 BARMER-insured persons who died between 2016 and 2019, we determined the utilization rates of primary PC (PPC), specially qualified and coordinated palliative homecare (PPC+), specialized palliative homecare (SPHC), inpatient PC, and hospice care on the basis of services billed at least once in the last year of life. We calculated time trends and regional variability and controlled for needs-related patient characteristics and access-related county of community characteristics.ResultsFrom 2016 to 2019, total PC increased from 33.8 to 36.2%, SPHC from 13.3 to 16.0% (max: Rhineland-Palatinate), and inpatient PC from 8.9 to 9.9% (max: Thuringia). PPC decreased from 25.8 to 23.9% (min: Brandenburg) and PPC+ came in at 4.4% (max: Saarland) in 2019. Hospice care remained constant at 3.4%. Regional variability in utilization rates remained high, increased for PPC and inpatient PC from 2016 to 2019, and decreased for SPHC and hospice care. The regional differences were also evident after adjustment.ConclusionIncreasingly more SPHC, less PPC, and high regional variability, which cannot be explained by demand- or access-related characteristics, indicate that the use of PC forms is oriented less to demand than to regionally available care capacities. In view of the growing need for palliative care due to demographic factors and decreasing personnel resources, this development must be viewed critically.

Population Structure, Abundance and Movement of Whale Sharks in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Project description:Data on the occurrence of whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman were collected by dedicated boat surveys and via a public-sightings scheme during the period from 2011 to 2014. A total of 422 individual whale sharks were photo-identified from the Arabian Gulf and the northern Gulf of Oman during that period. The majority of sharks (81%, n = 341) were encountered at the Al Shaheen area of Qatar, 90 km off the coast, with the Musandam region of Oman a secondary area of interest. At Al Shaheen, there were significantly more male sharks (n = 171) than females (n = 78; X2 = 17.52, P < 0.05). Mean estimated total length (TL) for sharks was 6.90 m ± 1.24 (median = 7 m; n = 296). Males (7.25 m ± 1.34; median = 8 m, n = 171) were larger than females (6.44 m ±1.09; median = 7 m, n = 78; Mann-Whitney U test, p < 0.01). Of the male sharks assessed for maturity 63% were mature (n = 81), with 50% attaining maturity by 7.29 m and 100% by 9.00 m. Two female sharks of >9 m individuals were visually assessed as pregnant. Connectivity among sharks sighted in Qatari, Omani and UAE waters was confirmed by individual spot pattern matches. A total of 13 identified sharks were re-sighted at locations other than that at which they were first sighted, including movements into and out of the Arabian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. Maximum likelihood techniques were used to model an estimated combined population for the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman of 2837 sharks ± 1243.91 S.E. (95% C.I. 1720-6295). The Al Shaheen aggregation is thus the first site described as being dominated by mature males while the free-swimming pregnant females are the first reported from the Indian Ocean.

Assessment of coastal salt marsh plants on the Arabian Gulf region.

Project description:Salt marshes form along coastlines and are very interesting ecosystems due to their function and services. In the future, salt marsh plants might provide food and medicine as crops irrigated via seawater in hyper-arid regions. In the Arabian Gulf, little is known about salt marsh vegetation. Therefore, a targeted search on scientific literature was performed to provide a comprehensive assessment. Hence, current knowledge of the extent and status of salt marsh in the Arabian Gulf region was reviewed, based on literature-based analysis. Then, historic trends of salt marsh publications were carefully inspected. This study provides a list of salt marsh families and their genera and species, with a total of 51 family 179 genera 316 species in the Arabian Gulf. The largest family was Chenopodiaceae followed by Poaceae, Asteraceae. Moreover, this study identified some of the gaps that could help future directions for scientific research, and help making decisions of conservation, management policies and procedures.

Upwelling and nutrient dynamics in the Arabian Gulf and sea of Oman.

Project description:This study demonstrates the vertical and horizontal distribution of nutrients and the seasonal response of nutrients to upwelling in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Thus, monthly data on nitrate, phosphate, and silicate are obtained from the World Ocean Atlas 2018 (WOA), as well as estimates of coastal and curl driven upwelling in both regions. The results of the study indicate that the Sea of Oman's surface and deep waters contained higher concentrations of nutrients than the Arabian Gulf by 80%. In addition, both regions have exhibited a general increase in the vertical distribution of nutrients as the depth increases. Among the aforementioned nutrients, nitrate is found to be a more limiting nutrient for phytoplankton growth than phosphate as the nitrate-to-phosphate ratios (N:P) in surface waters are lower (≤ 4.6:1) than the Redfield ratio (16:1). As for the upwelling, curl-driven upwelling accounts for more than half of the total upwelling in both regions, and both play an important role in nutrient transport. Thus, nutrients are upwelled from the subsurface to the mixed layer at a rate of 50% in the Oman Sea from 140 m to 20 m during the summer and to 40 m during the winter. Similarly, the Arabian Gulf shows 50% transport for nitrates, but 32% for phosphates, from 20 m to 5-10 m. However, due to the abundance of diatoms at the surface of the Arabian Gulf, the surface silicate content is 30% higher than that of the deeper waters.

Corrosion Inhibition of Cast Iron in Arabian Gulf Seawater by Two Different Ionic Liquids.

Project description:In this paper we report on the corrosion inhibition of cast iron in Arabian Gulf seawater by two different ionic liquids namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([EMIm]Cl) and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium chloride ([Py1,4]Cl). The inhibiting influence of the employed ionic liquids was investigated by weight loss, open circuit potential electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization. The results show the corrosion inhibition impact of the employed ionic liquids (ILs). Compared with [Py1,4]Cl, [EMIm]Cl shows a higher inhibition efficiency at a short immersion time, for the examined ILs concentrations. However, [Py1,4]Cl exhibits a higher efficiency upon increasing the immersion time indicating the persistence of the inhibiting influence. The corrosion inhibition of the employed ionic liquids is attributed to the adsorption of the cations of the ionic liquids onto the surface of cast iron forming a corrosion barrier.

<i>AdmixPower</i>: Statistical Power and Sample Size Estimation for Mapping Genetic Loci in Admixed Populations.

Project description:Admixed populations result from recent admixture of two or more ancestral populations with divergent allele frequencies. The genome of each admixed individual is a mosaic of haplotypes inherited from the ancestral populations. Despite the substantial work to assess power and sample size requirements for association mapping in genetically homogeneous populations of European ancestry, power and sample size estimation methods for mapping genes in genetically heterogeneous admixed populations such as African Americans are lacking. Admixture mapping is a method that traces the ancestral origin of disease-susceptibility genetic loci in the admixed population. We developed AdmixPower, a freely available tool set based on the open-source R software, to perform power and sample size analysis for genetically heterogeneous admixed populations considering continuous or dichotomous outcomes with a case-only or case-control study design. AdmixPower can be used to compute the sample size required to achieve investigator-specified statistical power under several key parameters including ancestry odds ratio, genotype risk ratio, parental risk ratio, an underlying genetic risk model, trait type, and admixture model (hybrid-isolation or continuous gene flow model). We demonstrate that differences in the key parameters in the admixed population results in substantial differences in the sample size required to achieve adequate power in admixture mapping studies. Our tool provides a resource for researchers to develop a strategy to minimize cost and maximize the success of identifying disease-susceptibility loci in an admixed population.
