Tuning the electrochemical potential of perfunctionalized dodecaborate clusters through vertex differentiation.

ABSTRACT: We report a new class of redox-active vertex-differentiated dodecaborate clusters featuring pentafluoroaryl groups. These [B12(OR)11NO2] clusters share several unique photophysical properties with their [B12(OR)12] analogues, while exhibiting significantly higher (+0.5 V) redox potentials. This work describes the synthesis, characterization, and isolation of [B12(O-CH2C6F5)11NO2] clusters in all 3 oxidation states (dianion, radical, and neutral). Reactivity to post-functionalization with thiol species via SNAr on the pentafluoroaryl groups is also demonstrated.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Bismuth Particles: Tuning Particle Shape through Substrate Type within a Narrow Potential Window.

Project description:Bismuth (Bi) electrodeposition was studied on Si/Ti/Au, FTO-, and ITO-coated glasses from acidic nitrate solutions with and without gluconate within a narrow potential window (ΔE = 80 mV). This potential range was sufficient to observe a change in particle shape, from polyhedrons (including hexagons) to dendrites, the trend being slightly different depending on substrate activity. In all cases, though, the formation of dendrites was favoured as the applied potential was made more negative. Bi particles were more uniformly distributed over the substrate when sodium gluconate was added to the electrolyte. X-ray diffraction analyses of dendrites grown at -0.28 V indicated that they exhibit the rhombohedral phase of Bi and are predominantly oriented along the (003) plane. This orientation is exacerbated at the lowest applied potential (-0.20 V vs. Ag|AgCl) on glass/ITO substrate, for which completed and truncated hexagons are observed from the top view scanning electron microscopy images.

Perfunctionalized Dodecaborate Clusters as Stable Metal-Free Active Materials for Charge Storage.

Project description:We report a class of perfunctionalized dodecaborate clusters that exhibit high stability towards high concentration electrochemical cycling. These boron clusters afford several degrees of freedom in material design to tailor properties including solubility and redox potential. The exceptional stability of these clusters was demonstrated using a symmetric flow cell setup for electrochemical cycling between two oxidation states for 45 days, with post-run analysis showing negligible decomposition of the active species (<0.1%). To further probe the limits of this system, a prototype redox flow battery with two different cluster materials was used to determine mutual compatibility. This work effectively illustrates the potential of bespoke boron clusters as robust material platform for electrochemical energy conversion and storage.

Minimum Vertex-type Sequence Indexing for Clusters on Square Lattice.

Project description:An effective indexing scheme for clusters that enables fast structure comparison and congruence check is desperately desirable in the field of mathematics, artificial intelligence, materials science, etc. Here we introduce the concept of minimum vertex-type sequence for the indexing of clusters on square lattice, which contains a series of integers each labeling the vertex type of an atom. The minimum vertex-type sequence is orientation independent, and it builds a one-to-one correspondence with the cluster. By using minimum vertex-type sequence for structural comparison and congruence check, only one type of data is involved, and the largest amount of data to be compared is n pairs, n is the cluster size. In comparison with traditional coordinate-based methods and distance-matrix methods, the minimum vertex-type sequence indexing scheme has many other remarkable advantages. Furthermore, this indexing scheme can be easily generalized to clusters on other high-symmetry lattices. Our work can facilitate cluster indexing and searching in various situations, it may inspire the search of other practical indexing schemes for handling clusters of large sizes.

Genome tuning through HLA and KIR gene clusters impact susceptibility to dengue.

Project description:Dengue is amongst the most prevalent viral diseases which globally affects millions of individuals annually and renders billions at risk, particularly in tropical and sub-tropical nations. WHO estimated 100-400 million infections each year and reported 4.2 million active cases in 2019 worldwide. The infection is caused by arthropod-transmitted dengue virus which is known to have 5 serotypes (DENV1-5). Most of the cases show mild clinical symptoms; though others may develop severe forms viz; dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. Though limited literature suggests the population-specific genetic influence on susceptibility and the clinical course of dengue; the genetic propensity of dengue is largely unknown in most ethnicities. In this context, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system represents the most polymorphic region of the human genome and is crucial for the initiation of an appropriate immune response. In most of the genome-wide association studies, the HLA complex is the most significantly linked genetic region with susceptibility or protection towards various infectious and noninfectious diseases. Killer immunoglobulin-like receptors represent another highly variable system present on the surface of natural killer (NK) cells which regulate the activity of NK cells through interactions with their cognate HLA ligands. It is conceivable that the interaction of HLA-Killer immunoglobulin-like receptors systems influences the host susceptibility towards dengue infection as well the disease outcome. Here we attempt to review these parameters in dengue infection and disease outcome. Further detailed investigations are warranted towards the identification of novel susceptibility markers and targeted therapeutic interventions.

Water Structure Recovery in Chaotropic Anion Recognition: High-Affinity Binding of Dodecaborate Clusters to γ-Cyclodextrin.

Project description:Dodecaborate anions of the type B12X12(2-) and B12X11Y(2-) (X=H, Cl, Br, I and Y=OH, SH, NH3(+), NR3(+)) form strong (K(a) up to 10(6) L mol(-1), for B12Br12(2-)) inclusion complexes with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD). The micromolar affinities reached are the highest known for this native CD. The complexation exhibits highly negative enthalpies (up to -25 kcal mol(-1)) and entropies (TΔS up to -18.4 kcal mol(-1), both for B12I12(2-)), which position these guests at the bottom end of the well-known enthalpy-entropy correlation for CDs. The high driving force can be traced back to a chaotropic effect, according to which chaotropic anions have an intrinsic affinity to hydrophobic cavities in aqueous solution. In line with this argument, salting-in effects revealed dodecaborates as superchaotropic dianions.

Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity Studies of the Conjugates of Curcumin with closo-Dodecaborate and Cobalt Bis(Dicarbollide) Boron Clusters †

Project description:A series of novel conjugates of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) and closo-dodecaborate with curcumin were synthesized by copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. These conjugates were tested for antibacterial activity. It was shown that all derivatives are active when exposed to Bacillus cereus ATCC 10702 and are not active against Gram-negative microorganisms and Candida albicans at the maximum studied concentration of 1000 mg/L. The conjugate of alkynyl-curcumin with azide synthesized from the tetrahydropyran derivative of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) exhibited activity against Gram-positive microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and the clinical isolate MRSA 17, that surpassed curcumin by 2–4 times.

Electrochemical tuning of the optical properties of nanoporous gold.

Project description:Using optical in-situ measurements in an electrochemical environment, we study the electrochemical tuning of the transmission spectrum of films from the nanoporous gold (NPG) based optical metamaterial, including the effect of the ligament size. The long wavelength part of the transmission spectrum around 800?nm can be reversibly tuned via the applied electrode potential. The NPG behaves as diluted metal with its transition from dielectric to metallic response shifted to longer wavelengths. We find that the applied potential alters the charge carrier density to a comparable extent as in experiments on gold nanoparticles. However, compared to nanoparticles, a NPG optical metamaterial, due to its connected structure, shows a much stronger and more broadband change in optical transmission for the same change in charge carrier density. We were able to tune the transmission through an only 200?nm thin sample by 30%. In combination with an electrolyte the tunable NPG based optical metamaterial, which employs a very large surface-to-volume ratio is expected to play an important role in sensor applications, for photoelectrochemical water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen and for solar water purification.

Tuning the isoelectric point of graphene by electrochemical functionalization.

Project description:The ability to control the charge-potential landscape at solid-liquid interfaces is pivotal to engineer novel devices for applications in sensing, catalysis and energy conversion. The isoelectric point (pI)/point of zero charge (pzc) of graphene plays a key role in a number of physico-chemical phenomena occurring at the graphene-liquid interface. Supported by theory, we present here a methodology to identify the pI/pzc of (functionalized) graphene, which also allows for estimating the nature and extent of ion adsorption. The pI of bare graphene (as-prepared, chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown) is found to be less than 3.3, which we can continuously modify up to 7.5 by non-covalent electrochemical attachment of aromatic amino groups, preserving the favorable electronic properties of graphene throughout. Modelling all the observed results with detailed theory, we also show that specific adsorption of ions and the substrate play only an ancillary role in our capability to tune the pI of graphene.

Tuning thermal conductivity in molybdenum disulfide by electrochemical intercalation.

Project description:Thermal conductivity of two-dimensional (2D) materials is of interest for energy storage, nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. Here, we report that the thermal conductivity of molybdenum disulfide can be modified by electrochemical intercalation. We observe distinct behaviour for thin films with vertically aligned basal planes and natural bulk crystals with basal planes aligned parallel to the surface. The thermal conductivity is measured as a function of the degree of lithiation, using time-domain thermoreflectance. The change of thermal conductivity correlates with the lithiation-induced structural and compositional disorder. We further show that the ratio of the in-plane to through-plane thermal conductivity of bulk crystal is enhanced by the disorder. These results suggest that stacking disorder and mixture of phases is an effective mechanism to modify the anisotropic thermal conductivity of 2D materials.

Tuning selectivity of electrochemical reactions by atomically dispersed platinum catalyst.

Project description:Maximum atom efficiency as well as distinct chemoselectivity is expected for electrocatalysis on atomically dispersed (or single site) metal centres, but its realization remains challenging so far, because carbon, as the most widely used electrocatalyst support, cannot effectively stabilize them. Here we report that a sulfur-doped zeolite-templated carbon, simultaneously exhibiting large sulfur content (17 wt% S), as well as a unique carbon structure (that is, highly curved three-dimensional networks of graphene nanoribbons), can stabilize a relatively high loading of platinum (5 wt%) in the form of highly dispersed species including site isolated atoms. In the oxygen reduction reaction, this catalyst does not follow a conventional four-electron pathway producing H2O, but selectively produces H2O2 even over extended times without significant degradation of the activity. Thus, this approach constitutes a potentially promising route for producing important fine chemical H2O2, and also offers opportunities for tuning the selectivity of other electrochemical reactions on various metal catalysts.
