Thermal evolution of the crystal structure and phase transitions of KNbO3.

ABSTRACT: The thermal evolution of the crystal structure and phase transitions of KNbO3 were investigated by high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement of the diffraction data. Two phase transitions from orthorhombic (Amm2) to tetragonal (P4mm) and from tetragonal to cubic ( Pm3¯m ) were confirmed, both on heating and cooling. Both phase transitions are first order based on the observed hysteresis. The mixed displacive and order-disorder nature of the tetragonal to cubic transition is argued based on symmetry and apparent divergence of the atomic positions from pseudo-cubic values. The transition between the orthorhombic and tetragonal phase shows no temperature-dependence for atomic positions and only thermal expansion of the unit cell parameters and is thus discussed in relation to a lattice dynamical instability.

Formamidinium iodide: crystal structure and phase transitions.

Project description:At a temperature of 100 K, CH5N2+·I- (I), crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c. The formamidinium cation adopts a planar symmetrical structure [the r.m.s. deviation is 0.002 Å, and the C-N bond lengths are 1.301 (7) and 1.309 (8) Å]. The iodide anion does not lie within the cation plane, but deviates from it by 0.643 (10) Å. The cation and anion of I form a tight ionic pair by a strong N-H⋯I hydrogen bond. In the crystal of I, the tight ionic pairs form hydrogen-bonded zigzag-like chains propagating toward [20-1] via strong N-H⋯I hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen-bonded chains are further packed in stacks along [100]. The thermal behaviour of I was studied by different physicochemical methods (thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and powder diffraction). Differential scanning calorimetry revealed three narrow endothermic peaks at 346, 387 and 525 K, and one broad endothermic peak at ∼605 K. The first and second peaks are related to solid-solid phase transitions, while the third and fourth peaks are attributed to the melting and decomposition of I. The enthalpies of the phase transitions at 346 and 387 K are estimated as 2.60 and 2.75 kJ mol-1, respectively. The X-ray powder diffraction data collected at different temperatures indicate the existence of I as the monoclinic (100-346 K), ortho-rhom-bic (346-387 K) and cubic (387-525 K) polymorphic modifications.

Crystal-Phase Transitions and Photocatalysis in Supramolecular Scaffolds.

Project description:The energy landscape of a supramolecular material can include different molecular packing configurations that differ in stability and function. We report here on a thermally driven crystalline order transition in the landscape of supramolecular nanostructures formed by charged chromophore amphiphiles in salt-containing aqueous solutions. An irreversible transition was observed from a metastable to a stable crystal phase within the nanostructures. In the stable crystalline phase, the molecules end up organized in a short scroll morphology at high ionic strengths and as long helical ribbons at lower salt content. This is interpreted as the result of the competition between electrostatic repulsive forces and attractive molecular interactions. Only the stable phase forms charge-transfer excitons upon exposure to visible light as indicated by absorbance and fluorescence features, second-order harmonic generation microscopy, and femtosecond transient absorbance spectroscopy. Interestingly, the supramolecular reconfiguration to the stable crystalline phase nanostructures enhances photosensitization of a proton reduction catalyst for hydrogen production.

Fission of Lipid-Vesicles by Membrane Phase Transitions in Thermal Convection.

Project description:Unilamellar lipid vesicles can serve as model for protocells. We present a vesicle fission mechanism in a thermal gradient under flow in a convection chamber, where vesicles cycle cold and hot regions periodically. Crucial to obtain fission of the vesicles in this scenario is a temperature-induced membrane phase transition that vesicles experience multiple times. We model the temperature gradient of the chamber with a capillary to study single vesicles on their way through the temperature gradient in an external field of shear forces. Starting in the gel-like phase the spherical vesicles are heated above their main melting temperature resulting in a dumbbell-deformation. Further downstream a temperature drop below the transition temperature induces splitting of the vesicles without further physical or chemical intervention. This mechanism also holds for less cooperative systems, as shown here for a lipid alloy with a broad transition temperature width of 8 K. We find a critical tether length that can be understood from the transition width and the locally applied temperature gradient. This combination of a temperature-induced membrane phase transition and realistic flow scenarios as given e.g. in a white smoker enable a fission mechanism that can contribute to the understanding of more advanced protocell cycles.

High-Resolution Thermal Imaging and Analysis of TIG Weld Pool Phase Transitions.

Project description:Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is a well-established joining process and offers the user flexibility to weld a large range of materials. Ultra-thin turbine tipping is an important application for TIG welding that is exceptionally challenging due to the wide range of variables needed to accurately control the process: slope times, arc control, travel speed, etc. We offer new insight into weld pool characteristics, utilizing both on- and off-line measurements of weld tracks. High-resolution thermal imaging yields spatially and temporally resolved weld pool phase transitions coupled with post-weld photographs, which gives a novel perspective into the thermal history of a weld. Our imaging system is filtered to measure a 10 nm window at 950 nm and comprises a commercial Sigma lens to produce a near-infrared (NIR) camera. The measured near-infrared radiance is calibrated for temperature over the range of from 800 to 1350 °C.

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transitions of commensurately modulated sodium saccharinate 1.875-hydrate.

Project description:This work reports reversible, single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transitions of commensurately modulated sodium saccharinate 1.875-hydrate [Na(sac)(15/8)H2O]. The phases were studied in the temperature range 298 to 20 K. They exhibit complex disordered states. An unusual reentrant disorder has been discovered upon cooling through a phase transition at 120 K. The disordered region involves three sodium cations, four water molecules and one saccharinate anion. At room temperature, the structure is an eightfold superstructure that can be described by the superspace group C2/c(0σ20)s0 with q = (0, 3/4, 0). It demonstrates maximum disorder with the disordered chemical entities having slightly different but close to 0.50:0.50 disorder component ratios. Upon cooling, the crystal tends to an ordered state, smoothly reaching a unified disorder component ratio of around 0.90:0.10 for each of the entities. Between 130 and 120 K a phase transition occurs involving a sudden increase of the disorder towards the disorder component ratio 0.65:0.35. Meanwhile, the space group and general organization of the structure are retained. Between 60 and 40 K there is another phase transition leading to a twinned triclinic phase. After heating the crystal back to room temperature its structure is the same as before cooling, indicating a complete reversibility of the phase transitions.

Crystal structure and thermal behaviour of pyridinium styphnate.

Project description:In the crystal structure of the title mol-ecular salt, C5H6N(+)·C6H2N3O8 (-) (systematic name: pyridinium 3-hy-droxy-2,4,6-tri-nitro-phenolate), the pyridin-ium cation and the 3-hy-droxy-2,4,6-tri-nitro-phenolate anion are linked through bifurcated N-H?(O,O) hydrogen bonds, forming an R 1 (2)(6) ring motif. The nitro group para with respect to phenolate ion forms an intra-molecular hydrogen bond with the adjacent phenolic -OH group, which results in an S(6) ring motif. The nitro group flanked by the phenolate ion and the phenolic -OH group deviates noticeably from the benzene ring, subtending a dihedral angle of 89.2?(4)°. The other two nitro groups deviate only slightly from the plane of the benzene ring, making dihedral angles of 2.8?(4) and 3.4?(3)°. In the crystal, the 3-hy-droxy-2,4,6-tri-nitro-phenolate anions are linked through O-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming chains along [100]. These anionic chains, to which the cations are attached, are linked via C-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional structure. Impact friction sensitivity tests and TGA/DTA studies on the title mol-ecular salt imply that it is an insensitive high-energy-density material.

Surface phase transitions and crystal habits of ice in the atmosphere.

Project description:With climate modeling predicting a raise of at least 2°C by year 2100, the fate of ice has become a serious concern, but we still do not understand how ice grows (or melts). In the atmosphere, crystal growth rates of basal and prism facets exhibit an enigmatic temperature dependence and crossover up to three times in a range between 0° and -40°. Here, we use large-scale computer simulations to characterize the ice surface and identify a sequence of previously unidentified phase transitions on the main facets of ice crystallites. Unexpectedly, we find that as temperature is increased, the crystal surface transforms from a disordered phase with proliferation of steps to a smooth phase with small step density. This causes the anomalous increase of step free energies and provides the long sought explanation for the enigmatic crossover of snow crystal growth rates found in the atmosphere.

Superfluid Phase Transitions and Effects of Thermal Pairing Fluctuations in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter.

Project description:We investigate superfluid phase transitions of asymmetric nuclear matter at finite temperature (T) and density (ρ) with a low proton fraction (Yp ≤ 0.2), which is relevant to the inner crust and outer core of neutron stars. A strong-coupling theory developed for two-component atomic Fermi gases is generalized to the four-component case, and is applied to the system of spin-1/2 neutrons and protons. The phase shifts of neutron-neutron (nn), proton-proton (pp) and neutron-proton (np) interactions up to k = 2 fm-1 are described by multi-rank separable potentials. We show that the critical temperature [Formula: see text] of the neutron superfluidity at Yp = 0 agrees well with Monte Carlo data at low densities and takes a maximum value [Formula: see text]= 1.68 MeV at [Formula: see text] with ρ0 = 0.17 fm-3. Also, the critical temperature [Formula: see text] of the proton superconductivity for Yp ≤ 0.2 is substantially suppressed at low densities due to np-pairing fluctuations, and starts to dominate over [Formula: see text] only above [Formula: see text](0.77) for Yp = 0.1(0.2), and (iii) the deuteron condensation temperature [Formula: see text] is suppressed at Yp ≤ 0.2 due to a large mismatch of the two Fermi surfaces.

Thermal transitions in serum amyloid A in solution and on the lipid: implications for structure and stability of acute-phase HDL.

Project description:Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase protein that circulates mainly on plasma HDL. SAA interactions with its functional ligands and its pathogenic deposition in reactive amyloidosis depend, in part, on the structural disorder of this protein and its propensity to oligomerize. In vivo, SAA can displace a substantial fraction of the major HDL protein, apoA-I, and thereby influence the structural remodeling and functions of acute-phase HDL in ways that are incompletely understood. We use murine SAA1.1 to report the first structural stability study of human plasma HDL that has been enriched with SAA. Calorimetric and spectroscopic analyses of these and other SAA-lipid systems reveal two surprising findings. First, progressive displacement of the exchangeable fraction of apoA-I by SAA has little effect on the structural stability of HDL and its fusion and release of core lipids. Consequently, the major determinant for HDL stability is the nonexchangeable apoA-I. A structural model explaining this observation is proposed, which is consistent with functional studies in acute-phase HDL. Second, we report an α-helix folding/unfolding transition in SAA in the presence of lipid at near-physiological temperatures. This new transition may have potentially important implications for normal functions of SAA and its pathogenic misfolding.

Pressure-induced phase transitions and superconductivity in a black phosphorus single crystal.

Project description:We report a thorough study of the transport properties of the normal and superconducting states of black phosphorus (BP) under magnetic field and high pressure with a large-volume apparatus that provides hydrostatic pressure to induce transitions from the layered A17 phase to the layered A7 phase and to the cubic phase of BP. Quantum oscillations can be observed at P ? 1 GPa in both resistivity and Hall voltage, and their evolutions with pressure in the A17 phase imply a continuous enlargement of Fermi surface. A significantly large magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures is observed in the A7 phase that becomes superconducting below a superconducting transition temperature T c ? 6-13 K. T c increases continuously with pressure on crossing the A7 to the cubic phase boundary. The strong MR effect can be fit by a modified Kohler's rule. A correlation between T c and fitting parameters suggests that phonon-mediated interactions play dominant roles in driving the Cooper pairing, which is further supported by our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The change of effective carrier mobility in the A17 phase under pressure derived from the MR effect is consistent with that obtained from the temperature dependence of the quantum oscillations. In situ single-crystal diffraction under high pressure indicates a total structural reconstruction instead of simple stretching of the A17 phase layers in the A17-to-A7-phase transition. This finding helps us to interpret transport properties on crossing the phase transition under high pressure.
