Visible light-mediated difluoroalkylation of electron-deficient alkenes.

ABSTRACT: A method for the reductive difluoroalkylation of electron-deficient alkenes using 1,1-difluorinated iodides mediated by irradiation with blue light is described. The reaction involves radical addition of 1,1-difluorinated radicals at the double bond followed by hydrogen atom transfer from sodium cyanoborohydride.

Dual gold and photoredox catalysis: visible light-mediated intermolecular atom transfer thiosulfonylation of alkenes.

Project description:Regioselective difunctionalization of alkenes has attracted significant attention from synthetic chemists and has the advantage of introducing diverse functional groups into vicinal carbons of common alkene moieties in a single operation. Herein, we report an unprecedented intermolecular atom transfer thiosulfonylation reaction of alkenes by combining gold catalysis and visible-light photoredox catalysis. A trifluoromethylthio group (SCF3) and other functionalized thio groups together with a sulfonyl group were regioselectively introduced into alkenes in the most atom economical manner. A detailed mechanism study indicated that a synergistic combination of gold catalysis and photoredox catalysis is crucial for this reaction.

Rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective cyclopropanation of electron deficient alkenes.

Project description:The rhodium-catalyzed reaction of electron-deficient alkenes with substituted aryldiazoacetates and vinyldiazoacetates results in highly stereoselective cyclopropanations. With adamantylglycine derived catalyst Rh2(S-TCPTAD)4, high asymmetric induction (up to 98% ee) can be obtained with a range of substrates. Computational studies suggest that the reaction is facilitated by weak interaction between the carbenoid and the substrate carbonyl but subsequently proceeds via different pathways depending on the nature of the carbonyl.. Acrylates and acrylamides result in the formation of cyclopropanation products while the use of unsaturated aldehydes and ketones results in the formation of epoxides.

Redox-Neutral Dual Functionalization of Electron-Deficient Alkenes.

Project description:Visible-light photoredox catalysis has been utilized in a new multicomponent reaction forming ?-functionalized ?-diketones under mild conditions in an operationally convenient manner. Single-electron reduction of in situ generated carboxylic acid derivatives forms acyl radicals that react further via 1,2-acylalkylation of olefins in an intermolecular, three-components cascade reaction, giving valuable synthetic entities from readily available starting materials. A diverse set of substrates has been used, demonstrating robust methodology with broad substrate scope.

<i>trans</i>-Diastereoselective Syntheses of γ-Lactones by Visible Light-Iodine-Mediated Carboesterification of Alkenes.

Project description:This study aims to develop an intermolecular lactonization reaction of alkenes with carbonyls mediated by visible light and molecular iodine. The one-step reaction involved the carboesterification of alkenes to produce the corresponding lactones in moderate to good yield. It was also revealed that it is possible to control the diastereoselectivity of the reaction by altering the base used and the reaction conditions. When water was added as a solvent, the reaction resulted in the formation of lactones with trans-selectivity. A mechanistic investigation was undertaken and it was found that the reaction requires the generation of an iodine radical from molecular iodine, driven by visible light irradiation, and proceeds via the formation of an iodine radical alkene adduct. The proposed reaction is an example of a rare-metal free intermolecular addition cyclization reaction, which is an environment-friendly chemical process that only uses molecular iodine. In addition, since diastereoselectivity was observed without the use of any specific reagents, the developed methodology is an example of a novel stereoselective transformation using only cost-effective reagents.

Controllable Isomerization of Alkenes by Dual Visible-Light-Cobalt Catalysis.

Project description:We report herein that thermodynamic and kinetic isomerization of alkenes can be accomplished by the combination of visible light with Co catalysis. Utilizing Xantphos as the ligand, the most stable isomers are obtained, while isomerizing terminal alkenes over one position can be selectively controlled by using DPEphos as the ligand. The presence of the donor-acceptor dye 4CzIPN accelerates the reaction further. Transformation of exocyclic alkenes into the corresponding endocyclic products could be efficiently realized by using 4CzIPN and Co(acac)2 in the absence of any additional ligands. Spectroscopic and spectroelectrochemical investigations indicate CoI being involved in the generation of a Co hydride, which subsequently adds to alkenes initiating the isomerization.

Herein, a transition-metal-free protocol is presented for the vicinal trifluoromethylthio-thiolation of unactivated alkenes via a radical process under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope and excellent tolerance.

Project description:Visible-light photoredox-catalyzed fragmentation of methyl N-phthalimidoyl oxalate allows the direct construction of a 1,4-dicarbonyl structural motif by a conjugate addition of the methoxycarbonyl radical to reactive Michael acceptors. The regioselectivity of the addition of this alkoxyacyl radical species to electron-deficient olefins is heavily influenced by the electronic nature of the acceptor, behavior similar to that exhibited by nucleophilic alkyl radicals.
