Optically reconfigurable polarized emission in Germanium.

ABSTRACT: Light polarization can conveniently encode information. Yet, the ability to tailor polarized optical fields is notably demanding but crucial to develop practical methods for data encryption and to gather fundamental insights into light-matter interactions. Here we demonstrate the dynamic manipulation of the chirality of light at telecom wavelengths. This unique possibility is enrooted in the multivalley nature of the conduction band of a conventional semiconductor, namely Ge. In particular, we demonstrate that optical pumping suffices to govern the kinetics of spin-polarized carriers and eventually the chirality of the radiative recombination. We found that the polarized component of the emission can be remarkably swept through orthogonal eigenstates without magnetic field control or phase shifter coupling. Our results provide insights into spin-dependent phenomena and offer guiding information for the future selection and design of spin-enhanced photonic functionalities of group IV semiconductors.

Circularly polarized laser emission in optically active organic dye solutions.

Project description:The generation of circularly polarized laser emission (CPLE) in photonic devices has attracted increasing attention due to the prospects of using CP light in displaying technologies or advanced microscopies. Organic systems excel as laser materials across the whole visible spectrum, and despite many of them displaying circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), none have been shown thus far to amplify their own CPL, let alone generate CPLE. Consequently, there is still a need to find alternative CPLE organic devices. Herein we demonstrate an effective strategy for achieving strong levels of CPLE (|glum| ∼ 0.1-0.2) by using solutions of an achiral dye dissolved in optically active solvents to exploit the full potential of the dynamic birefringence induced by the intense and polarized laser pumping. The present approach enables changing the CPLE handedness by changing the handedness of the solvent optical activity, opening new avenues for developing cost-effective and easily processable chiro-photonic materials.

Ultrafast, All Optically Reconfigurable, Nonlinear Nanoantenna.

Project description:The enhancement of nonlinear optical effects via nanoscale engineering is a hot topic of research. Optical nanoantennas increase light-matter interaction and provide, simultaneously, a high throughput of the generated harmonics in the scattered light. However, nanoscale nonlinear optics has dealt so far with static or quasi-static configurations, whereas advanced applications would strongly benefit from high-speed reconfigurable nonlinear nanophotonic devices. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate ultrafast all-optical modulation of the second harmonic (SH) from a single nanoantenna. Our design is based on a subwavelength AlGaAs nanopillar driven by a control femtosecond light pulse in the visible range. The control pulse photoinjects free carriers in the nanostructure, which in turn induce dramatic permittivity changes at the band edge of the semiconductor. This results in an efficient modulation of the SH signal generated at 775 nm by a second femtosecond pulse at the 1.55 μm telecommunications (telecom) wavelength. Our results can lead to the development of ultrafast, all optically reconfigurable, nonlinear nanophotonic devices for a broad class of telecom and sensing applications.

Low-threshold optically pumped lasing in highly strained germanium nanowires.

Project description:The integration of efficient, miniaturized group IV lasers into CMOS architecture holds the key to the realization of fully functional photonic-integrated circuits. Despite several years of progress, however, all group IV lasers reported to date exhibit impractically high thresholds owing to their unfavourable bandstructures. Highly strained germanium with its fundamentally altered bandstructure has emerged as a potential low-threshold gain medium, but there has yet to be a successful demonstration of lasing from this seemingly promising material system. Here we demonstrate a low-threshold, compact group IV laser that employs a germanium nanowire under a 1.6% uniaxial tensile strain as the gain medium. The amplified material gain in strained germanium can sufficiently overcome optical losses at 83?K, thus allowing the observation of multimode lasing with an optical pumping threshold density of ~3.0?kW?cm-2. Our demonstration opens new possibilities for group IV lasers for photonic-integrated circuits.

All-Optically Reconfigurable Plasmonic Metagrating for Ultrafast Diffraction Management.

Project description:Hot-electron dynamics taking place in nanostructured materials upon irradiation with fs-laser pulses has been the subject of intensive research, leading to the emerging field of ultrafast nanophotonics. However, the most common description of nonlinear interaction with ultrashort laser pulses assumes a homogeneous spatial distribution for the photogenerated carriers. Here we theoretically show that the inhomogeneous evolution of the hot carriers at the nanoscale can disclose unprecedented opportunities for ultrafast diffraction management. In particular, we design a highly symmetric plasmonic metagrating capable of a transient symmetry breaking driven by hot electrons. The subsequent power imbalance between symmetrical diffraction orders is calculated to exceed 20% under moderate (∼2 mJ/cm2) laser fluence. Our theoretical investigation also indicates that the recovery time of the symmetric configuration can be controlled by tuning the geometry of the metaatom, and can be as fast as 2 ps for electrically connected configurations.

Optically initialized robust valley-polarized holes in monolayer WSe2.

Project description:A robust valley polarization is a key prerequisite for exploiting valley pseudospin to carry information in next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. Although monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides with inherent spin-valley coupling offer a unique platform to develop such valleytronic devices, the anticipated long-lived valley pseudospin has not been observed yet. Here we demonstrate that robust valley-polarized holes in monolayer WSe2 can be initialized by optical pumping. Using time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy, we observe a long-lived valley polarization for positive trion with a lifetime approaching 1 ns at low temperatures, which is much longer than the trion recombination lifetime (∼10-20 ps). The long-lived valley polarization arises from the transfer of valley pseudospin from photocarriers to resident holes in a specific valley. The optically initialized valley pseudospin of holes remains robust even at room temperature, which opens up the possibility to realize room-temperature valleytronics based on transition metal dichalcogenides.

Structural origin of light emission in germanium quantum dots.

Project description:We used a combination of optically-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy with molecular dynamics simulations to explore the origins of light emission in small (5 nm to 9 nm) Ge nanoparticles. Two sets of nanoparticles were studied, with oxygen and hydrogen terminated surfaces. We show that optically-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy shows sufficient sensitivity to reveal the different origins of light emission in these two sets of samples. We found that in oxygen terminated nanoparticles its the oxide-rich regions that are responsible for the light emission. In hydrogen terminated nanoparticles we established that structurally disordered Ge regions contribute to the luminescence. Using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and optically-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy we show that these disordered regions correspond to the disordered layer a few Å thick at the surface of the simulated nanoparticle.

Optically Reconfigurable Chiral Microspheres of Self-Organized Helical Superstructures with Handedness Inversion.

Optically Reconfigurable Complementary Logic Gates Enabled by Bipolar Photoresponse in Gallium Selenide Memtransistor.

Project description:To avoid the complexity of the circuit for in-memory computing, simultaneous execution of multiple logic gates (OR, AND, NOR, and NAND) and memory behavior are demonstrated in a single device of oxygen plasma-treated gallium selenide (GaSe) memtransistor. Resistive switching behavior with RON /ROFF ratio in the range of 104 to 106 is obtained depending on the channel length (150 to 1600 nm). Oxygen plasma treatment on GaSe film created shallow and deep-level defect states, which exhibit carriers trapping/de-trapping, that lead to negative and positive photoconductance at positive and negative gate voltages, respectively. This distinguishing feature of gate-dependent transition of negative to positive photoconductance encourages the execution of four logic gates in the single memory device, which is elusive in conventional memtransistor. Additionally, it is feasible to reversibly switch between two logic gates by just adjusting the gate voltages, e.g., NAND/NOR and AND/NAND. All logic gates presented high stability. Additionally, memtransistor array (1×8) is fabricated and programmed into binary bits representing ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) code for the uppercase letter "N". This facile device configuration can provide the functionality of both logic and memory devices for emerging neuromorphic computing.

Germanium: a new catalyst for diamond synthesis and a new optically active impurity in diamond.

Project description:Diamond attracts considerable attention as a versatile and technologically useful material. For many demanding applications, such as recently emerged quantum optics and sensing, it is important to develop new routes for fabrication of diamond containing defects with specific optical, electronic and magnetic properties. Here we report on successful synthesis of diamond from a germanium-carbon system at conditions of 7 GPa and 1,500-1,800 °C. Both spontaneously nucleated diamond crystals and diamond growth layers on seeds were produced in experiments with reaction time up to 60 h. We found that diamonds synthesized in the Ge-C system contain a new optical centre with a ZPL system at 2.059 eV, which is assigned to germanium impurities. Photoluminescence from this centre is dominated by zero-phonon optical transitions even at room temperature. Our results have widened the family of non-metallic elemental catalysts for diamond synthesis and demonstrated the creation of germanium-related optical centres in diamond.

Chiral Organic Dyes Endowed with Circularly Polarized Laser Emission.

Project description:The direct generation of efficient, tunable, and switchable circularly polarized laser emission (CPLE) would have far-reaching implications in photonics and material sciences. In this paper, we describe the first chiral simple organic molecules (SOMs) capable of simultaneously sustaining significant chemical robustness, high fluorescence quantum yields, and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) ellipticity levels (|glum|) comparable to those of similar CPL-SOMs. All these parameters altogether enable efficient laser emission and CPLE with ellipticity levels 2 orders of magnitude stronger than the intrinsic CPL ones.
