Protoheme (hereafter referred to as heme) is an essential cellular cofactor and signaling molecule that is also potentially cytotoxic. To mitigate heme toxicity, heme synthesis and degradation are tightly coupled to heme utilization in order to limit the intracellular concentration of "free" heme.
