Multipolar passive cloaking by nonradiating anapole excitation.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, we demonstrate the relation between cloaking effect and its nonradiating state by considering the destructive multipolar interaction between near-field scattering by bare object and surrounding coating located in its proximity. This cloaking effect is underpinned by anapole mode excitation and it occurs as destructive interference between the electric dipole moment, generated by a bare object (here a central metallic scatterer) and the toroidal moment, formed inside the cloak (a surrounding cluster of dielectric cylinders). Numerical results show how a cloaking effect based on the formation of the anapole mode can lead to an overall nonradiating metamolecule with all-dielectric materials in the coating region.

Enhanced Thermo-optical Response by Means of Anapole Excitation.

Project description:High refractive index (HRI) dielectric nanostructures offer a versatile platform to control the light-matter interaction at the nanoscale as they can easily support electric and magnetic modes with low losses. An additional property that makes them extraordinary is that they can support low radiative modes, so-called anapole modes. In this work, we propose a spectrally tunable anapole nanoheater based on the use of a dielectric anapole resonator. We show that a gold ring nanostructure, a priori nonresonant, can be turned into a resonant unit by just filling its hole with an HRI material supporting anapole modes, resulting in a more efficient nanoheater able to amplify the photothermal response of the bare nanoring. As proof of concept, we perform a detailed study of the thermoplasmonic response of a gold nanoring used as heating source and a silicon disk, designed to support anapole modes, located in its center acting as an anapolar resonator. Furthermore, we utilize the anapole excitation to easily shift the thermal response of these structures from the shortwave infrared range to the near-infrared range.

Excitation of nonradiating magnetic anapole states with azimuthally polarized vector beams.

Project description:Nonradiating current configurations have been drawing the attention of the physics community for many years. It has been demonstrated recently that dielectric nanoparticles provide a unique platform to host such nonradiating modes, called "anapoles". Here we study theoretically the excitation of such exotic anapole modes in silicon nanoparticles using structured light. Alternative illumination configurations, properly designed, are able to unlock hidden behavior of scatterers. Particularly, azimuthally polarized focused beams enable us to excite ideal anapole modes of magnetic type in dielectric nanoparticles. Firstly, we perform the decomposition of this type of excitation into its multipolar content and then we employ the T-matrix method to calculate the far-field scattering properties of nanoparticles illuminated by such beams. We propose several configuration schemes where magnetic anapole modes of simple or hybrid nature can be detected in silicon nanospheres, nanodisks and nanopillars.

Excitation of dark multipolar plasmonic resonances at terahertz frequencies.

Project description:We experimentally observe the excitation of dark multipolar spoof localized surface plasmon resonances in a hybrid structure consisting of a corrugated metallic disk coupled with a C-shaped dipole resonator. The uncoupled corrugated metallic disk only supports a dipolar resonance in the transmission spectrum due to perfect symmetry of the structure. However, the dark multipolar spoof localized surface plasmon resonances emerge when coupled with a bright C-shaped resonator which is placed in the vicinity of the corrugated metallic disk. These excited multipolar resonances show minimum influence on the coupling distance between the C-shaped resonator and corrugated metallic disk. The resonance frequencies of the radiative modes are controlled by varying the angle of the C-shaped resonator and the inner disk radius, both of which play dominant roles in the excitation of the spoof localized surface plasmons. Observation of such a transition from the dark to radiative nature of multipolar spoof localized plasmon resonances would find potential applications in terahertz based resonant plasmonic and metamaterial devices.

Increasing the density of passive photonic-integrated circuits via nanophotonic cloaking.

Project description:Photonic-integrated devices need to be adequately spaced apart to prevent signal cross-talk. This fundamentally limits their packing density. Here we report the use of nanophotonic cloaking to render neighbouring devices invisible to one another, which allows them to be placed closer together than is otherwise feasible. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrated waveguides that are spaced by a distance of ∼λ0/2 and designed waveguides with centre-to-centre spacing as small as 600 nm (<λ0/2.5). Our experiments show a transmission efficiency >-2 dB and an extinction ratio >15 dB over a bandwidth larger than 60 nm. This performance can be improved with better design algorithms and industry-standard lithography. The nanophotonic cloak relies on multiple guided-mode resonances, which render such devices very robust to fabrication errors. Our devices are broadly complimentary-metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible, have a minimum pitch of 200 nm and can be fabricated with a single lithography step. The nanophotonic cloaks can be generally applied to all passive integrated photonics.

Efficient ultrafast all-optical modulation in a nonlinear crystalline gallium phosphide nanodisk at the anapole excitation.

Project description:High-refractive index nanostructured dielectrics have the ability to locally enhance electromagnetic fields with low losses while presenting high third-order nonlinearities. In this work, we exploit these characteristics to achieve efficient ultrafast all-optical modulation in a crystalline gallium phosphide (GaP) nanoantenna through the optical Kerr effect (OKE) and two-photon absorption (TPA) in the visible/near-infrared range. We show that an individual GaP nanodisk can yield differential reflectivity modulations of up to ~40%, with characteristic modulation times between 14 and 66 fs, when probed at the anapole excitation (AE). Numerical simulations reveal that the AE represents a unique condition where both the OKE and TPA contribute with the same modulation sign, maximizing the response. These findings highly outperform previous reports on sub-100-fs all-optical switching from resonant nanoscale dielectrics, which have demonstrated modulation depths no larger than 0.5%, placing GaP nanoantennas as a promising choice for ultrafast all-optical modulation at the nanometer scale.

Nonradiating anapole modes in dielectric nanoparticles.

Project description:Nonradiating current configurations attract attention of physicists for many years as possible models of stable atoms. One intriguing example of such a nonradiating source is known as 'anapole'. An anapole mode can be viewed as a composition of electric and toroidal dipole moments, resulting in destructive interference of the radiation fields due to similarity of their far-field scattering patterns. Here we demonstrate experimentally that dielectric nanoparticles can exhibit a radiationless anapole mode in visible. We achieve the spectral overlap of the toroidal and electric dipole modes through a geometry tuning, and observe a highly pronounced dip in the far-field scattering accompanied by the specific near-field distribution associated with the anapole mode. The anapole physics provides a unique playground for the study of electromagnetic properties of nontrivial excitations of complex fields, reciprocity violation and Aharonov-Bohm like phenomena at optical frequencies.

RNA Cloaking by Reversible Acylation.

Project description:We describe a selective and mild chemical approach for controlling RNA hybridization, folding, and enzyme interactions. Reaction of RNAs in aqueous buffer with an azide-substituted acylating agent (100-200 mm) yields several 2'-OH acylations per RNA strand in as little as 10 min. This poly-acylated ("cloaked") RNA is strongly blocked from hybridization with complementary nucleic acids, from cleavage by RNA-processing enzymes, and from folding into active aptamer structures. Importantly, treatment with a water-soluble phosphine triggers a Staudinger reduction of the azide groups, resulting in spontaneous loss of acyl groups ("uncloaking"). This fully restores RNA folding and biochemical activity.

Radiationless anapole states in on-chip photonics.

Project description:High-index nanoparticles are known to support radiationless states called anapoles, where dipolar and toroidal moments interfere to inhibit scattering to the far field. In order to exploit the striking properties arising from these interference conditions in photonic integrated circuits, the particles must be driven in-plane via integrated waveguides. Here, we address the excitation of electric anapole states in silicon disks when excited on-chip at telecom wavelengths. In contrast to normal illumination, we find that the anapole condition-identified by a strong reduction of the scattering-does not overlap with the near-field energy maximum, an observation attributed to retardation effects. We experimentally verify the two distinct spectral regions in individual disks illuminated in-plane from closely placed waveguide terminations via far-field and near-field measurements. Our finding has important consequences concerning the use of anapole states and interference effects of other Mie-type resonances in high-index nanoparticles for building complex photonic integrated circuitry.

Cloaking a qubit in a cavity.

Project description:Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) uses a cavity to engineer the mode structure of the vacuum electromagnetic field such as to enhance the interaction between light and matter. Exploiting these ideas in solid-state systems has lead to circuit QED which has emerged as a valuable tool to explore the rich physics of quantum optics and as a platform for quantum computation. Here we introduce a simple approach to further engineer the light-matter interaction in a driven cavity by controllably decoupling a qubit from the cavity's photon population, effectively cloaking the qubit from the cavity. This is realized by driving the qubit with an external tone tailored to destructively interfere with the cavity field, leaving the qubit to interact with a cavity which appears to be in the vacuum state. Our experiment demonstrates how qubit cloaking can be exploited to cancel the ac-Stark shift and measurement-induced dephasing, and to accelerate qubit readout. In addition to qubit readout, applications of this method include qubit logical operations and the preparation of non-classical cavity states in circuit QED and other cavity-based setups.

Multiplexed Near-Field Optical Trapping Exploiting Anapole States.

Project description:Optical tweezers have had a major impact on bioscience research by enabling the study of biological particles with high accuracy. The focus so far has been on trapping individual particles, ranging from the cellular to the molecular level. However, biology is intrinsically heterogeneous; therefore, access to variations within the same population and species is necessary for the rigorous understanding of a biological system. Optical tweezers have demonstrated the ability of trapping multiple targets in parallel; however, the multiplexing capability becomes a challenge when moving toward the nanoscale. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a resonant metasurface that is capable of trapping a high number of nanoparticles in parallel, thereby opening up the field to large-scale multiplexed optical trapping. The unit cell of the metasurface supports an anapole state that generates a strong field enhancement for low-power near-field trapping; importantly, the anapole state is also more angle-tolerant than comparable resonant modes, which allows its excitation with a focused light beam, necessary for generating the required power density and optical forces. We use the anapole state to demonstrate the trapping of 100's of 100 nm polystyrene beads over a 10 min period, as well as the multiplexed trapping of lipid vesicles with a moderate intensity of <250 μW/μm2. This demonstration will enable studies relating to the heterogeneity of biological systems, such as viruses, extracellular vesicles, and other bioparticles at the nanoscale.
