Impact of climate change on backup energy and storage needs in wind-dominated power systems in Europe.

ABSTRACT: The high temporal variability of wind power generation represents a major challenge for the realization of a sustainable energy supply. Large backup and storage facilities are necessary to secure the supply in periods of low renewable generation, especially in countries with a high share of renewables. We show that strong climate change is likely to impede the system integration of intermittent wind energy. To this end, we analyze the temporal characteristics of wind power generation based on high-resolution climate projections for Europe and uncover a robust increase of backup energy and storage needs in most of Central, Northern and North-Western Europe. This effect can be traced back to an increase of the likelihood for long periods of low wind generation and an increase in the seasonal wind variability.

Accelerating deployment of offshore wind energy alter wind climate and reduce future power generation potentials.

Project description:The European Union has set ambitious CO2 reduction targets, stimulating renewable energy production and accelerating deployment of offshore wind energy in northern European waters, mainly the North Sea. With increasing size and clustering, offshore wind farms (OWFs) wake effects, which alter wind conditions and decrease the power generation efficiency of wind farms downwind become more important. We use a high-resolution regional climate model with implemented wind farm parameterizations to explore offshore wind energy production limits in the North Sea. We simulate near future wind farm scenarios considering existing and planned OWFs in the North Sea and assess power generation losses and wind variations due to wind farm wake. The annual mean wind speed deficit within a wind farm can reach 2-2.5 ms-1 depending on the wind farm geometry. The mean deficit, which decreases with distance, can extend 35-40 km downwind during prevailing southwesterly winds. Wind speed deficits are highest during spring (mainly March-April) and lowest during November-December. The large-size of wind farms and their proximity affect not only the performance of its downwind turbines but also that of neighboring downwind farms, reducing the capacity factor by 20% or more, which increases energy production costs and economic losses. We conclude that wind energy can be a limited resource in the North Sea. The limits and potentials for optimization need to be considered in climate mitigation strategies and cross-national optimization of offshore energy production plans are inevitable.

Storage power purchase agreements to enable the deployment of energy storage in Europe.

Project description:We propose a contractual setup, the proxy storage power purchase agreement (PPA), to foster the deployment of energy storage technologies. We define a threshold price below which the PPA becomes financially attractive for PPA buyers. We compute the threshold price for several storage technologies and configurations, in seven European countries. Such threshold prices overlap with the best-case forecast of the battery levelized cost of storage in 2030, indicating that proxy storage PPAs can play a role in enabling battery storage installations within the next ten years in Europe (generating about €180 million per year). Moreover, we identify UK and Germany as the most attractive countries for storage PPAs in Europe due to the high projected threshold prices and planned storage capacities. We show that revenues are maximized when coupling storage with wind energy generation rather than solar. This points to the design of policies that efficiently subsidize storage installations.

Operation of a wind turbine-flywheel energy storage system under conditions of stochastic change of wind energy.

Project description:The paper presents the issues of a wind turbine-flywheel energy storage system (WT-FESS) operation under real conditions. Stochastic changes of wind energy in time cause significant fluctuations of the system output power and as a result have a negative impact on the quality of the generated electrical energy. In the author's opinion it is possible to reduce the aforementioned effects by using an energy storage of an appropriate type and capacity. It was assumed that based on the technical parameters of a wind turbine-energy storage system and its geographical location one can determine the boundary capacity of the storage, which helps prevent power cuts to the grid at the assumed probability. Flywheel energy storage was selected due to its characteristics and technical parameters. The storage capacity was determined based on an empirical relationship using the results of the proposed statistical and energetic analysis of the measured wind velocity courses. A detailed algorithm of the WT-FESS with the power grid system was developed, eliminating short-term breaks in the turbine operation and periods when the wind turbine power was below the assumed level.

The impact of climate change on photovoltaic power generation in Europe.

Project description:Ambitious climate change mitigation plans call for a significant increase in the use of renewables, which could, however, make the supply system more vulnerable to climate variability and changes. Here we evaluate climate change impacts on solar photovoltaic (PV) power in Europe using the recent EURO-CORDEX ensemble of high-resolution climate projections together with a PV power production model and assuming a well-developed European PV power fleet. Results indicate that the alteration of solar PV supply by the end of this century compared with the estimations made under current climate conditions should be in the range (-14%;+2%), with the largest decreases in Northern countries. Temporal stability of power generation does not appear as strongly affected in future climate scenarios either, even showing a slight positive trend in Southern countries. Therefore, despite small decreases in production expected in some parts of Europe, climate change is unlikely to threaten the European PV sector.

Saturation wind power potential and its implications for wind energy.

Project description:Wind turbines convert kinetic to electrical energy, which returns to the atmosphere as heat to regenerate some potential and kinetic energy. As the number of wind turbines increases over large geographic regions, power extraction first increases linearly, but then converges to a saturation potential not identified previously from physical principles or turbine properties. These saturation potentials are >250 terawatts (TW) at 100 m globally, approximately 80 TW at 100 m over land plus coastal ocean outside Antarctica, and approximately 380 TW at 10 km in the jet streams. Thus, there is no fundamental barrier to obtaining half (approximately 5.75 TW) or several times the world's all-purpose power from wind in a 2030 clean-energy economy.

The impact of energy storage on the reliability of wind and solar power in New England.

Project description:In this study, the potential of wind and solar power to reliably meet the electricity demand of New England is evaluated, as well as the role of energy storage in improving the reliability of the region's renewable energy system. Using 44 years of hourly weather data from 1980 to 2023 obtained from the NASA MERRA-2 reanalysis product, the variability of these renewable resources and their impact on the region's electricity supply and demand is investigated. With varying mixes of wind and solar resources and sufficient resources capacity to generate electricity equal to annual demand, we find that a wind-dominant system can meet approximately 73% of the region's hourly electricity demand, whereas a solar-dominant system can only meet about 69%. However, incorporating 12 h of energy storage enhances the overall reliability of a wind-dominant system to 86%. In comparison, incorporating the same amount of energy storage in a solar-dominant system results in an overall reliability of approximately 87%. Ultimately, our analysis shows that achieving 100% reliability in meeting the annual electricity demand of New England requires addressing the mismatch between electricity demand and resource availability in terms of both location and time. This can be achieved through the integration of significant amounts of energy storage and/or wind and solar resources installations capable of generating electricity that exceeds peak demand by at least 3 times.

Hybrid energy storage configuration method for wind power microgrid based on EMD decomposition and two-stage robust approach.

Project description:Data centers are usually characterized by high energy loads, which raises increasing sustainability concerns in both academic and daily usage. To mitigate the uncertainty and high volatility of distributed wind energy generation, this paper proposes a hybrid energy storage allocation strategy by means of the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) technique and the two-stage robust method. First, this paper conducts the evolution analyses for the over- and under-evaluated uncertainty of wind power fluctuation under different time scales. Second, we employ the EMD technique to configure a high-frequency flywheel energy storage device, realizing the wind power transformation from large fluctuations to small fluctuations and the convergence of the wind power fluctuation curves in minute- and hour levels. Finally, based on the hour-level wind energy stable power curves, we carry out two-stage robust planning for the equipment capacity of low-frequency cold storage tanks and lithium bromide chillers. The case study on a data center microgrid in northeastern China confirms the effectiveness of our proposed strategy.

Wind energy potential assessment based on wind speed, its direction and power data.

Project description:Based on wind speed, direction and power data, an assessment method of wind energy potential using finite mixture statistical distributions is proposed. Considering the correlation existing and the effect between wind speed and direction, the angular-linear modeling approach is adopted to construct the joint probability density function of wind speed and direction. For modeling the distribution of wind power density and estimating model parameters of null or low wind speed and multimodal wind speed data, based on expectation-maximization algorithm, a two-component three-parameter Weibull mixture distribution is chosen as wind speed model, and a von Mises mixture distribution with nine components and six components are selected as the models of wind direction and the correlation circular variable between wind speed and direction, respectively. A comprehensive technique of model selection, which includes Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, the coefficient of determination R2 and root mean squared error, is used to select the optimal model in all candidate models. The proposed method is applied to averaged 10-min field monitoring wind data and compared with the other estimation methods and judged by the values of R2 and root mean squared error, histogram plot and wind rose diagram. The results show that the proposed method is effective and the area under study is not suitable for wide wind turbine applications, and the estimated wind energy potential would be inaccuracy without considering the influence of wind direction.

Impacts of climate change, population growth, and power sector decarbonization on urban building energy use.

Project description:Climate, technologies, and socio-economic changes will influence future building energy use in cities. However, current low-resolution regional and state-level analyses are insufficient to reliably assist city-level decision-making. Here we estimate mid-century hourly building energy consumption in 277 U.S. urban areas using a bottom-up approach. The projected future climate change results in heterogeneous changes in energy use intensity (EUI) among urban areas, particularly under higher warming scenarios, with on average 10.1-37.7% increases in the frequency of peak building electricity EUI but over 110% increases in some cities. For each 1 °C of warming, the mean city-scale space-conditioning EUI experiences an average increase/decrease of ~14%/ ~ 10% for space cooling/heating. Heterogeneous city-scale building source energy use changes are primarily driven by population and power sector changes, on average ranging from -9% to 40% with consistent south-north gradients under different scenarios. Across the scenarios considered here, the changes in city-scale building source energy use, when averaged over all urban areas, are as follows: -2.5% to -2.0% due to climate change, 7.3% to 52.2% due to population growth, and -17.1% to -8.9% due to power sector decarbonization. Our findings underscore the necessity of considering intercity heterogeneity when developing sustainable and resilient urban energy systems.

Assessing climate change impacts on the near-term stability of the wind energy resource over the United States.

Project description:The energy sector comprises approximately two-thirds of global total greenhouse gas emissions. For this and other reasons, renewable energy resources including wind power are being increasingly harnessed to provide electricity generation potential with negligible emissions of carbon dioxide. The wind energy resource is naturally a function of the climate system because the "fuel" is the incident wind speed and thus is determined by the atmospheric circulation. Some recent articles have reported historical declines in measured near-surface wind speeds, leading some to question the continued viability of the wind energy industry. Here we briefly articulate the challenges inherent in accurately quantifying and attributing historical tendencies and making robust projections of likely future wind resources. We then analyze simulations from the current generation of regional climate models and show, at least for the next 50 years, the wind resource in the regions of greatest wind energy penetration will not move beyond the historical envelope of variability. Thus this work suggests that the wind energy industry can, and will, continue to make a contribution to electricity provision in these regions for at least the next several decades.
