Fruits and vegetables at home (FLAM): a randomized controlled trial of the impact of fruits and vegetables vouchers in children from low-income families in an urban district of France.

ABSTRACT: Fruits and Vegetables (FV) consumption is considered a marker of social inequalities in health since it is considerably decreased in disadvantaged populations. The main objective of this trial was to evaluate the impact of vouchers for FV purchase on the consumption of FV among children living in disadvantaged families in a French urban district.The FLAM study was a controlled randomized intervention trial, performed in Saint-Denis (North suburbs of Paris). The study group (intervention or control) was randomly attributed to parent-child pairs at inclusion. The intervention group received vouchers exchangeable for FV over a 1 year period. Nutritional education through workshops was available for both groups. FV consumption was assessed through face-to-face food frequency questionnaires. Participants who reported eating less than 3.5 FV per day were considered low FV consumers.A total of 92 parent-child pairs were included, in which 45 were allocated to the intervention group and 47 to the control group. Amongst them, 64 completed the final follow-up questionnaire (30% lost to follow-up). After one year, the proportion of low FV consumers in children was significantly lower in the intervention group (29.4%) compared to the control group (66.7%, p?=?0.005). Overall, 82% of the vouchers were used by the families.This study found a decreased proportion of small consumers in children after 1 year of distribution of FV vouchers compared to the control group. Project description:Bangladesh is experiencing an increasing prevalence of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Considering daily total requirement of 5 servings as minimum recommended amount, 95.7% of people do not consume adequate fruit or vegetables on an average day in the country. Imposition of lockdown during COVID-19 created disturbance in fresh fruits and vegetable production and their retailing. This incident can make these dietary products less affordable by stimulating price and trigger NCDs. However, little is known about the supply chain actors of healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits in urban areas, and how they were affected due to pandemic. Aiming toward the impact of COVID-19 on the business practices and outcomes for the vegetables and fruits retailers in Bangladesh, a survey of 1,319 retailers was conducted in two urban areas, namely Dhaka and Manikganj from September 2021 to October 2021. To comprehend the impact of COVID-19 on the profit margin of the retailers and on the percentage change in sales, a logistic and an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression were estimated. Significant difference in the weekly business days and daily business operations was observed. The average daily sales were estimated to have a 42% reduction in comparison to pre-COVID level. The daily average profit margin on sales was reportedly reduced to 17% from an average level of 21% in the normal period. Nevertheless, this impact is estimated to be disproportionate to the product type and subject to business location. The probability of facing a reduction in profit margin is higher for the fruit sellers than the vegetable sellers. Contemplating the business location, the retailers in Manikganj (a small city) faced an average of 19 percentage points less reduction in their sales than those in Dhaka (a large city). Area-specific and product-specific intervention are required for minimizing the vulnerability of retailers of vegetables and fruits and ensuring smooth supply of fruits and vegetables and increasing their uptake to combat diet related NCD.

Project description:Rural infrastructures are important factors which are involved in agricultural development in Ethiopia. Among them, rural road facilities play a very significant role in the improvement of agricultural production and household income. This is because a good rural road network hurries efficient delivery of agricultural farm input and creates an opportunity to supply product to market. Currently, poor road conditions are hindering supply of product to market, which in turn affects households' annual income in most rural areas of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to asses the impact of improved road networks on marketing of vegetables and households' income in Dedo district in Ethiopia. For the study, two kebele were selected and data were collected from randomly selected 176 households from two kebele in the district. In addition to this, key informant interviews and focus group discussions were also conducted. Data were analyzed by multiple response tests and multiple linear regression models on statistical packages of the social sciences (SPSS). Study found that, from the total annual income of households; 58.5% of income was earned from vegetable production and it takes a lion share of households' annual income in the study area. Regression results revealed that independent variables in the study had an insignificant influence on rural household annual income (p < 0.05). The multiple correlation coefficient measure (R = 0.845) also indicates that the relationship between rural household annual income and independent (set of explanatory) variables was strongly correlated. Findings also expose that high transportation costs incurring, spoilage of the product, deprived extension, service and market information, and reduction of household income are among the major impacts of road infrastructure in the district. Therefore, study suggested that rural households must have gained road access and federal and local road authorities should give attention to rural area road infrastructural development.
