Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD<sup>+</sup>) extends longevity in experimental organisms, raising interest in its impact on human health. De novo NAD<sup>+</sup> biosynthesis from tryptophan is evolutionarily conserved yet considered supplanted among higher species by biosynthesis from nicotinamide (NAM).
