Room Temperature Processing of Inorganic Perovskite Films to Enable Flexible Solar Cells.

ABSTRACT: Inorganic lead halide perovskite materials have attracted great attention recently due to their potential for greater thermal stability compared with hybrid organic perovskites. However, the high processing temperature to convert from the non-perovskite phase to the cubic perovskite phase in many of these systems has limited their application in flexible optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a room temperature processed inorganic perovskite solar cell (PSC) based on CsPbI₂Br as the light harvesting layer. By combining this composition with key precursor solvents, we show that inorganic perovskite films can be prepared by the vacuum-assist method under room temperature conditions in air. Unencapsulated devices achieved power conversion efficiency up to 8.67% when measured under 1-sun irradiation. Exploiting this room temperature process, flexible inorganic PSCs based on an inorganic metal halide perovskite material are demonstrated.

Growth Temperature Influence on Atomic-Layer-Deposited In2O3 Thin Films and Their Application in Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Recently, indium oxide (In2O3) thin films have emerged as a promising electron transport layer (ETL) for perovskite solar cells; however, solution-processed In2O3 ETL suffered from poor morphology, pinholes, and required annealing at high temperatures. This research aims to carry out and prepare pinhole-free, transparent, and highly conductive In2O3 thin films via atomic layer deposition (ALD) seizing efficiently as an ETL. In order to explore the growth-temperature-dependent properties of In2O3 thin film, it was fabricated by ALD using the triethyl indium (Et3In) precursor. The detail of the ALD process at 115-250 °C was studied through the film growth rate, crystal structure, morphology, composition, and optical and electrical properties. The film growth rate increased from 0.009 nm/cycle to 0.088 nm/cycle as the growth temperature rose from 115 °C to 250 °C. The film thickness was highly uniform, and the surface roughness was below 1.6 nm. Our results confirmed that film's structural, optical and electrical properties directly depend on film growth temperature. Film grown at ≥200 °C exhibited a polycrystalline cubic structure with almost negligible carbon impurities. Finally, the device ALD-In2O3 film deposited at 250 °C exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 10.97% superior to other conditions and general SnO2 ETL.

Organic-Inorganic Perovskite Films and Efficient Planar Heterojunction Solar Cells by Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have been widely used in photovoltaic technologies. Despite tremendous progress in their efficiency and stability, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are still facing the challenges of upscaling and stability for practical applications. As a mature film preparation technology, magnetron sputtering has been widely used to prepare metals, metallic oxides, and some semiconductor films, which has great application potential in the fabrication of PSCs. Here, a unique technology where high-quality perovskite films are prepared via magnetron sputtering for controllable composition, solvent-free, large-area, and massive production, is presented. This strategy transforms the perovskite materials from powder to thin films by magnetron sputtering and post-treatment (vapor-assisted treatment with methanaminium iodide gas and methylamine gas treatment), which is greatly favorable to manufacture tandem solar cells. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs with perovskite films fabricated by magnetron sputtering is 6.14%. After optimization, high-performance perovskite films with excellent electronic properties are obtained and stable PSCs with excellent reproducibility are realized, showing a PCE of up to 15.22%. The entirely novel synthetic approach opens up a new and promising way to achieve high-throughput magnetron sputtering for large-area production in commercial applications of planar heterojunction and tandem PSCs.

Room Temperature Processed Double Electron Transport Layers for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Zinc Oxide (ZnO) has been regarded as a promising electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) owing to its high electron mobility. However, the acid-nonresistance of ZnO could destroy organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskite such as methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI3) in PSCs, resulting in poor power conversion efficiency (PCE). It is demonstrated in this work that Nb2O5/ZnO films were deposited at room temperature with RF magnetron sputtering and were successfully used as double electron transport layers (DETL) in PSCs due to the energy band matching between Nb2O5 and MAPbI3 as well as ZnO. In addition, the insertion of Nb2O5 between ZnO and MAPbI3 facilitated the stability of the perovskite film. A systematic investigation of the ZnO deposition time on the PCE has been carried out. A deposition time of five minutes achieved a ZnO layer in the PSCs with the highest power conversion efficiency of up to 13.8%. This excellent photovoltaic property was caused by the excellent light absorption property of the high-quality perovskite film and a fast electron extraction at the perovskite/DETL interface.

Highly Efficient Reproducible Perovskite Solar Cells Prepared by Low-Temperature Processing.

Project description:In this work, we describe the role of the different layers in perovskite solar cells to achieve reproducible, ~16% efficient perovskite solar cells. We used a planar device architecture withPedotPSS on the bottom, followed by the perovskite layer and an evaporated C60 layer before deposition of the top electrode. No high temperature annealing step is needed, which also allows processing on flexible plastic substrates. Only the optimization of all of these layers leads to highly efficient and reproducible results. In this work, we describe the effects of different processing conditions, especially the influence of the C60 top layer on the device performance.

Reactive Inorganic Vapor Deposition of Perovskite Oxynitride Films for Solar Energy Conversion.

Project description:The synthesis of perovskite oxynitrides, which are promising photoanode candidates for solar energy conversion, is normally accomplished by high-temperature ammonolysis of oxides and carbonate precursors, thus making the deposition of their planar films onto conductive substrates challenging. Here, we proposed a facile strategy to prepare a series of perovskite oxynitride films. Taking SrTaO2N as a prototype, we prepared SrTaO2N films on Ta foils under NH3 flow by utilizing the vaporized SrCl2/SrCO3 eutectic salt. The SrTaO2N films exhibit solar water-splitting photocurrents of 3.0 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), which increases by 270% compared to the highest photocurrent (1.1 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) of SrTaO2N reported in the literature. This strategy may also be applied to directly prepare a series of perovskite oxynitride films on conductive substrates such as ATaO2N (A = Ca, Ba) and ANbO2N (A = Sr, Ba).

Room-Temperature-Processed Amorphous Sn-In-O Electron Transport Layer for Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:We report amorphous tin-indium-oxide (TIO, Sn fraction: >50 atomic percentage (at%)) thin films as a new electron transport layer (ETL) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). TIO thin films with Sn fraction of 52, 77, 83, 92, and 100 at% were grown on crystalline indium-tin-oxide (ITO, Sn fraction: ~10 at%) thin films, a common transparent conducting oxide, by co-sputtering In2O3 and SnO2 at room temperature. The energy band structures of the amorphous TIO thin films were determined from the optical absorbance and the ultraviolet photoelectron spectra. All the examined compositions are characterized by a conduction band edge lying between that of ITO and that of perovskite (here, methylammonium lead triiodide), indicating that TIO is a potentially viable ETL of PSCs. The photovoltaic characteristics of the TIO-based PSCs were evaluated. Owing mainly to the highest fill factor and open circuit voltage, the optimal power conversion efficiency was obtained for the 77 at%-Sn TIO ETL with TiCl4 treatment. The fill factor and the open circuit voltage changes with varying the Sn fraction, despite similar conduction band edges. We attribute these differences to the considerable changes in the electrical resistivity of the TIO ETL. This would have a significant effect on the shunt and/or the series resistances. The TIO ETL can be continuously grown on an ITO TCO in a chamber, as ITO and TIO are composed of identical elements, which would help to reduce production time and costs.

Solvent-controlled growth of inorganic perovskite films in dry environment for efficient and stable solar cells.

Project description:Inorganic halide perovskites such as cesium lead halide are promising due to their excellent thermal stability. Cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3) has a bandgap of 1.73?eV and is very suitable for making efficient tandem solar cells, either with low-bandgap perovskite or silicon. However, the phase instability of CsPbI3 is hindering the further optimization of device performance. Here, we show that high quality and stable ?-phase CsPbI3 film is obtained via solvent-controlled growth of the precursor film in a dry environment. A 15.7% power conversion efficiency of CsPbI3 solar cells is achieved, which is the highest efficiency reported for inorganic perovskite solar cells up to now. And more importantly, the devices can tolerate continuous light soaking for more than 500?h without efficiency drop.

Solution-Processed Large-Area Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Antireflective Films for Perovskite Solar Cell.

Project description:In recent years, organic/inorganic hybrid materials have attracted much attention in the field of multilayer antireflection films because of their excellent optical properties. In this paper, the organic/inorganic nanocomposite was prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP). The hybrid material has a wide, tunable window of refractive index, i.e., 1.65-1.95, at a wavelength of 550 nm. The atomic force microscope (AFM) results of the hybrid films show the lowest root-mean-square surface roughness of 2.7 Å and a low haze of 0.23%, indicating that the films have good potential for optical applications. The double-sided antireflection films (10 × 10 cm2) with one side of hybrid nanocomposite/cellulose acetate and the other side of hybrid nanocomposite /polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) achieved high transmittances of 98% and 99.3%, respectively. After 240 days of aging testing, the hybrid solution and the antireflective film remained stable with almost no attenuation. Furthermore, the application of the antireflection films in perovskite solar cell modules increased the power conversion efficiency from 16.57% to 17.25%.

Fabrication of Porous Lead Bromide Films by Introducing Indium Tribromide for Efficient Inorganic CsPbBr3 Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:In the process of preparing CsPbBr3 films by two-step or multi-step methods, due to the low solubility of CsBr in organic solvents, the prepared perovskite films often have a large number of holes, which is definitely not conducive to the performance of CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In response to this problem, this article proposed a method of introducing InBr3 into the PbBr2 precursor to prepare a porous PbBr2 film to increase the reaction efficiency between CsBr and PbBr2 and achieve the purpose of In (Ⅲ) incorporation, which not only optimized the morphology of the produced CsPbBr3 film but also enhanced the charge extraction and transport capabilities, which was ascribed to the reduction of the trap state density and impurity phases in the perovskite films, improving the performance of CsPbBr3 PSCs. At the optimal InBr3 concentration of 0.21 M, the InBr3:CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cell exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 6.48%, which was significantly higher than that of the pristine device.

Low photoactive phase temperature all-inorganic, tin-lead mixed perovskite solar cell.

Project description:CsPbI3 films have recently attracted significant attention as efficient absorbers for thermally stable photovoltaic devices. However, their large bandgap and photoactive black phase formation at high temperature impede their use for practical applications. Using the concept of lattice contraction, we demonstrate a low bandgap (≤1.44 eV) cesium-based inorganic perovskite CsPb x Sn1-x I3 that can be solution processed at low temperature for photovoltaic devices. The results from systematic measurements imply that the partial substitution of lead (Pb) with tin (Sn) results in crystal lattice contraction, which is essential for realizing photoactive phase formation at l00 °C and stabilizing photoactive phase at room temperature. These findings demonstrate the potential of using cesium-based inorganic perovskite as viable alternatives to MA- or FA-based perovskite photovoltaic materials.
